The 2012 presidential campaign has officially gone to the dogs as the Obama and Romney camps have started sparring over their respective candidates perceived mistreatment of their pups.

The issue began when Republican frontrunner Mitt Romney's wife Ann told a family anecdote about how they took a roadtrip to Canada in the 1980s with their dog Seamus in a kennel strapped to the roof of the car.

After outcry from animal rights activists, President Barack Obama had his own dog trouble on his hands when a blogger mentioned a line from one of his books that said he once ate dog as a child in Indonesia.
