In Oct. 2009 the Democratic Socialists of America released the names of current members of Congress who are members of the organization. This is probably what West is talking about. The names released were as follows:

Well, if the Administration wins its Supreme Court case people will be forced to buy health insurance whether they want it or not. But it goes back farther than that. During the time of FDR, we established the precdent that the Commerce Clause means that the Federal government has jurisdiction over something if it "affects" interstate commerce. It was used to say a Farmer couldn't grow wheat on his own property for his own use even though no interstate commerce...or even any commerce of any kind...was involved. That concept has been used to do things like say that someone in California can't grow marijuana for legal sale under California law even if no interstate commerce is involved. It's been used to tell businesses they can't make their own decisions about who they hire and don't hire without Federal government interference. Many other things.

Most of us are, as individuals, much less free than individuals in our situations in this country once were. It's not just liberals who did it. Conservatives have participated in it too (see the Drug War). But it all goes back to allowing the Federal government power well beyond what was intended and understood by those who crafted and ratified Constitutional language.
