According to the Harvard Law School course catalog, professor Charles Ogletree will be teaching a reading group called “Understanding Obama” for one classroom credit during the 2013 spring term.

“This reading group will focus on the way in which race, religion, and politics have impacted the development of President Obama as a leader,” the Harvard Law School Course Catalog explains.

The professor wants to offer the class in addition to what he's required to teach and students can choose to take it in addition to what they're required to take. That's one great thing about universities...you can find a bunch of small courses in topics/skills that you what to learn more about but aren't actually needed for your degree.

If it isn't needed for the degree, why do the participants earn credit toward graduation? It isn't Con Law or Contracts.

He's improving, he at least threw some punctuation in at the end there. Keep up the good work, dal!

Great retort, dalSharpton. Simplistic as always.

This course is just one more reason that my streak of NOT giving a dime to Harvard will continue in 2012. Seven years and counting.

As you're fond of sayin', just sayin'. Why give to the world's richest university that continues to do stupid political stuff -- and won't allow its FB players into the FCS playoffs -- when there are lots of worthwhile local charitable groups to give to? Very easy choice, actually: help feed the local hungry, of whom there are far too many, than provide scholarships for those who really don't need them.

The day you feed the local hungry is the day Michelle Bachmann wins the Presidency. Who do you think you're fooling?

Well, I can't go too far, Ivy. If they are white, I'm sure you'll help them.

There's a lot of extra-curricular courses that are 1 credit but don't actually count towards your graduation. ODU's engineering department offers a solar energy class every other year that's one credit even though it fills absolutely no requirement for any major. Sometimes professors and the schools simply wants to make extra money and/or the professor really wants to teach something they're excited about (plus the prof. can put it on their resume). I know it probably didn't work that way at Citadel, but most schools do offer courses that don't fulfill anything.

Why would anyone help anyone who isn't white? Well, that only applies to people. I'm sure the money I give to the ASPCA funds the care of brown and black dogs.

I never took fewer than 21 hours in a semester at The Citadel. I didn't have time for bullshit courses.
