Santorum, tax evader
http://www.kpax.com/news/mt-plates-spot ... ate-s-bus/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
MISSOULA- No presidential candidates are Montana residents, but at least one has Missoula County plates on his tour bus.
"That's a Montana plate," Missoula County Commissioner Michele Landquist said.
Landquist received a photo of Rick Santorum's tour bus in Washington, D.C. from an acquaintance.
"Yep, that's definitely a four, isn't it?" she said, pointing out the unmistakable Montana outline on the plate, and a license number beginning with a four: Missoula County.
"She snapped the photo and sent this to me and said, ‘Look, you're never gonna believe this. He must be from Montana.' She was joking," Landquist said.
The last time we checked, presidential candidate Rick Santorum was not a Montanan. In fact, we're not sure what ties to the Big Sky State except for the license plates on his tour bus.
Out of all the places in the country to register a motor vehicle, Missoula County may seem like a random place to pick, but not when you consider the plate comes tax-free.
"It's very inexpensive to register a motorhome here compared to other states," Missoula County Chief Deputy Treasurer Kim Seeberger said.
It's no secret Montana has no sales tax. But only residents can legally license their vehicles here.
But Santorum, and tens of thousands of others found a legal way around it. Seeberger said they work with local law firms or individuals that help them establish a Montana Limited Liability Company (LLC), which acts as a resident under state law.
"They set up the LLC, register it with the Secretary of State and then they go and do the titling and the renewals down the road with a customer and just manage their vehicles for them," Seeberger said.
It likely cost Santorum $307.50 to register and title his bus in Montana, which could've cost him thousands in taxes in his home state of Pennsylvania.
"He's running for President," Landquist said. "I would think he should be paying taxes in the state - isn't Pennsylvania his state? I would think that he should be paying his license plate fees and taxes for the state that he's from and that's elected him once to show him some loyalty."

Of course not. This is not Santorum's personal bus. He is running a national campaign. The bus can be registered anywhere he wants. It would be different if this were say, his luxury yacht used for his personal pleasure.andy7171 wrote:...or maybe the bus is rented out of montana? Do canidates really buy a whole bus personally?

I can promise you 100% that is not the case. Being that I work for the office that registers vehicles I know who that vehicle is registered to. I can't tell you because of privacy laws but I can say it is not a rental company from Montana.andy7171 wrote:...or maybe the bus is rented out of montana? I agree it's probably not his motor home, but he is still using the coach of a company that registered in Montana, with no ties here, simply to avoid paying taxes.

Oregon plates are common to high dollar motor homes as well and for the same reasons.
My state will bust you if you are caught with Oregon or Montana plates on a vehicle you own while claiming Wyoming residency, and it ain't pretty when they do.
I have known some that have done this, and keep their rig in hiding, and yes, they certainly have the money to pay the sales tax, and yes they are very highly likely.. conks.

It looks like Santorum followed the law as it is written and is darned smart for doing so. I didn't vote for the guy in the primary but applaud him for his business sense in this instance.

The law in Montana allows people to do this, but as Wedge said, most states will fine you big time if you get caught with Montana plates while claiming residency somewhere else. It's legal here, but that doesn't make it ok in other states.

The LLC is based out of Montana. I think you will find the other states don't care about that though.89Hen wrote:In what state does the LLC reside?Vidav wrote:

I think you're still confusing a vehicle used for personal use and one for business use. PA would care if Rick drove the thing to the grocery store every day and parked it in his PA driveway. I'm guessing the thing hasn't spent more than a day here and there in PA.Vidav wrote:The LLC is based out of Montana. Once again, the poli-trolls are making a big deal out of nothing.
Have we already forgotten the plethora of tax-evaders President Obama paraded before the Congress as spoils system candidates for Cabinet and other appointable Executive Branch positions? People with SERIOUS evasion issues?

I'm not. I don't even know if PA would care about this. Now, since you admittedly have never paid any taxes and are going around without health insurance, you really are not qualified to post your opinion here on the big boy pants forum, you are however more than qualified to post all about girly sports ..
