Dukakis was way ahead in the polls as a negative reaction to Reagan's failed Presidency, the bitter fruits of which (deficit and malaise) we realized later.
Certainly, he did not score points with red staters for his answer to that question your bring up, but he was still right. You have to distance yourself from being overly emotional in such things and let the law take its course. Is that not the American way?
Then, he got Hortoned, something, as I said, Bush said he regretted later.
Bush attempted to distance himself from Reagan (because he knew the nation needed it) and got overwhelmed by the bad Reagan policies when they finally came to bear. We needed to raise taxes, so he did and, despite his courage, the guy paid the price.
