Marine Gen. James Mattis, head of U.S. Central Command, also said Syria has a "substantial" chemical and biological weapons capability and thousands of shoulder-launched missiles. Until now, the U.S. military has largely declined to describe the expanse of weapons that President Bashar Assad's regime has at its disposal.

I didn't read the article however I did see last week that the Obama administration was stating that Iraq DID have WMDS but transferred them to Syria before we invaded.
President Obama’s choice to be the next director of national intelligence supported the view that Saddam Hussein’s regime in Iraq sent weapons and documents to Syria in the weeks before the 2003 U.S. invasion.
Retired Air Force Lt. Gen. James R. Clapper, a former director of the Defense Intelligence Agency and current undersecretary of defense for intelligence, will be the next DNI. President Obama announced Gen. Clapper as his nominee Saturday, saying he must not fall victim to Washington politics.
The man who served as the no. 2 official in Saddam Hussein's air force says Iraq moved weapons of mass destruction into Syria before the war by loading the weapons into civilian aircraft in which the passenger seats were removed.
The Iraqi general, Georges Sada, makes the charges in a new book, "Saddam's Secrets," released this week. He detailed the transfers in an interview yesterday with The New York Sun.
"There are weapons of mass destruction gone out from Iraq to Syria, and they must be found and returned to safe hands," Mr. Sada said. "I am confident they were taken over."

Everybody that doesnt have an agenda knows that Iraq had WMDs and got rid of them to other countries. Some of them have been found, but that doesnt follow the bash Bush doctrine so......meh.
I dont care if Iraq had WMDs or if it was fabricated (it wasnt) we did the right thing getting rid of Saddam Hussein at any cost. It put the world on notice that the USA has a spine again......

I was in Iraq during Desert Shield and Desert Storm and our chemical monitors went off. Not just one montior, but multiple monitors. There were WMD in Iraq, no one will convince me otherwise. Carry on.

Well apparently it worked once, and from some of the posts here thus far, we must be getting our stupid-on back up for another go around of "where's the WMDs"
Funny Bush would admit in an interview that Iraq had no significant stockpiles of WMDs and also that Iraq had no connection to the 9/11 attacks either, and then have Obama come out and dispute these facts.
The last few weeks alone is enough proof we as a country are plenty dumb enough to believe anything, as long as somebody in our political party or some talking head on our favorite "unbiased" cable news channel says it is so.
While I do believe Saddam had WMD's, for someone who would gas the Kurds wouldn't just get rid of them because someone asked him to, so my question is, how big an area did Saddam need to hide them? Could it all have fit into one warehouse, or moved to multiple locations and simply hid it rooms, or in families homes that were told they would be thrown in the chipper if they didn't comply?
I too read plenty of documents on the WMD going to Syria. Supposedly the Beqaa Valley.

Yeah right, you read...
One thing a reasonable person needs to think here, just what kind of WMDs do you think they had, and just how mobile would they be. You think these "WMDs" posed a threat to the United States? Did Dick Cheney not tell us we would see a mushroom cloud from Iraq? Are you contending because of all this informative reading, that Hussein sent all his nukes to Syria, and that they (being a crudely built atom bomb) are so mobile that they could shuffle them around whenever? Did he also move all his intercontinental ballistic missile delivery systems to Syria, how about their strategic bomber fleet, and nuclear ballistic missile submarines???
If some Republican hack writes that he personally saw a duffle bag full of hand grenades, RPGs and Black Flag insect spray cross the border into Syria, then I guess that is how you buffoons feel great about the whole "moved" horrible weapons of mass destruction story.
Man, this country is getting dumber by the day. Come on November, let's get this over with so the House can begin the inevitable impeachment proceedings.

I didn't ever take WMD's to mean nukes. I took them to mean chemical and biological. That was why I was asking about the storage question. Doesn't it take a minute amount of Sarin to kill a person? If you could stuff 100,000 potential kills in a 55gallon drum, that would be pretty easy to hide and transport.
Does nobody remember the Soviet "diplomatic" convoy that got shot up in Iraq?

I guess you don't read my other posts much Cap'n. I may be large for a cyclist, but you don't do a 200 mile ride in one day looking like that. Probably not even on one with a motor.

Never did finish that thread. They showed up here on Thursday afternoon right at closing time and right after I had gotten a hold of AMEX and put a stop on it. Told them to take it right back to the store, I did not want it anymore.
I am really sorry they had to drive 100 miles with a refrigerator in their truck for nothing. Hardly slept at all that night.

+1
After the invasion, U.N. inspectors found scores of spent chemical weapon casings/delivery devices, and oversaw the removal of tons of yellow cake (though most was left over from Sadam's 80's weapons development programs).
There were WMD's in Iraq.

Yeah good ol' monitors. I was the NBC guy in Lebanon, and the Kingdom while there. Those POS would go off when you put some bug spray or deodorant on. Funny how that works isn't it?

I could see one going off, but we had multiple go off at virtually the same time. I am betting you would be assholes and elbows getting your gear on if multiple went off too. Did we get exposed? I don't know for sure, probably never will. (Might explain some things about me ) I was in a front line unit in GW1, I wasn't a REMF. My motto was better safe than sorry during that time and we never left our protective mask even while digging a damn foxhole. I took those little white pills of whaever the hell they were too.
Bottom line is, there is so much open space and so much shit in that desert, you could hide about anything you wanted. Give me 10 years to do it and I'll hide China there.

I'm surprised there's still people that believe Iraq never had WMD's. SH used chemical and biological weapons not only against the Iranians, but also against the Kurds in his own "country". I spent plenty of time in Iraq in those early days, and I can tell you the threat was very real. So it's not a question of whether or not he had them, it's a question of where they went, and when. It's not out of the realm of possibility that the Baath party in Syria took 'em over, but who knows.
Also, I don't think anyone's made the argument that SH had nukes.
I think that one issue in all of this was that when our government said "WMDs", many people had a mental picture of nuclear weapons. In reality, the WMDs that Saddam had (as well as used) were chemical weapons. The administration back then did try to make a case that Saddam was still pursuing nuclear capability, or might still be pursuing it. There was a lot of circumstantial evidence that Saddam was still up to no good, and most of the evidence that he was not was only verifiable after the fact. When it was discovered that Saddam's nuke program was in fact dead, the fallout extended to all WMDs, and there are still many people who believe there were no WMDs in Iraq. The truth is actually in the middle. Saddam did have significant stockpiles of chemical weapons. He did not have a nuclear program. He also did not have a significant bioweapon program, in that biological weapons are extremely hard to weaponize to the point that they are effective except in large amounts.
Saddam did not have a delivery system, either, unless you consider a guy with a briefcase a delivery system.
However, to say that Saddam had the ability to wreak havoc in the US was alarmist. To say that he did not have WMDs at all is also disingenuous.
In 2004 I know the Poles down in Babil province did uncover some chemical artillery shells, I don't remember which chemical they were. There is also significant evidence that a lot of chemical weapons went to Syria.
As for where could Saddam have hidden his chemical weapons, they sky's the limit. Iraq has a pretty big desert, and Saddam did bury a lot of his toys. I personally saw a MiG-25 that had been completely buried in Anbar province and was later excavated by the Marines out there. I know the guy who has one of the vertical stabilizers off that one.
As for Saddam's weapons being in Syria a case for US involvement in Syria, I guess we have to ask ourselves how much of a threat to the US Syria is. What would their capability be? I was never really all that afraid of or concerned about Saddam's ability to strike the US, and I am not that concerned about Syria. If they actually had nukes and a capable delivery system, then that would be a different story. However, I think that as with Iran, we would have to give serious consideration to whether or not we would want to allow countries like Iraq or Syria to actually develop those weapons in the first place, and I think THAT is what we were sold in 2002-2003. I don't give anyone a pass on that, either. A lot of people voted "for" before they voted "against".
