Oh, and Santorum is an absolute nut. He can say whatever he wants in a "if elected..." vein but the guy has zero chance of being elected. Being second fiddle in a poor GOP Presidential primary may put him "close" to that goal, but you could put a live chicken up against him in an election and the chicken would win by double digits - actually, that kind of happened already with Bob Casey beating him in the last Senatorial election he lost, and Casey has a brain noticeably smaller than a live chicken.

If I DO vote for him, it'll be in spite of the fact he's pro-life.

question, Jon: how can he unilaterally nullify same-sex marriages without a constitutional amendment? You have GOT to know he's just pandering to the religious right hoping to get their votes in the primaries. Honestly, why people get so worked up about moral positions of politicians is beyond me. We've got bigger fish to fry.
It would take a constitutional amendment - which now has little chances of passing. But this just shows how crazy this man is.
Don't forget Obama proposed creating a quasi-military youth-corp to brainwash secondary school kids.

That had as much chance of implementation as replacing the Joint Strike Fighter F-35 with...

Jon is right here...in that it will be nearly impossible for Santorum to pull this off if he's elected. And as others have noted, even that is extremely questionable right now. Romney has some major momentum going into Super Tuesday.

But my gut feeling is that this is a State's Rights issue. Even if you could get the 50 states, DC, and the territories to agree on the basics of a federal ban, nailing down the specifics would probably hamstring the entire deal.

Leave it with the states....

So which is it? Jon's saying he's losing hundreds of thousands of dollars over a lifetime by not being legally married, and the literature says that being married ends up costing people money over a lifetime. Which is it?
I'm sure he hopes he's correct because if the truth is that being married doesn't result in big savings, it's a huge blow to his single issue.

Depends a lot on income disparity between couples - if one has a much higher salary than the other, then marriage is a substantial tax savings.

If a partner is on one's medical plan, that gets taxed as income

This article really applies to people that are higher income, and have more or less equal incomes. Not my situation.

And honestly, the tax savings, while nice (and more a retort to those that say moral issues are not economic issues) are not my reason for wanting equality.

But thanks for playing. Really peachy of you to be so dismissive of other's rights.

So then you're not talking about $10k per year in savings.

And there he goes off the deep end again. Where did I say I was against it? I merely asked why you felt the need to exaggerate.

This isn't good enough for me. I need to hear that he will bomb nations which do not nullify same-sex marriage before he has my vote. ;)

What about bombing nations that execute gays - is that off the table? Would Iran and Syria be bomb free under a Santorum Presidency?

The "Napkin" Santorum will be dispatched sooner or later, it's the polygams that are headed to the GOP nomination.

Watch out for much higher taxes on booze, coffee, tea, and coca cola.

Tax breaks for Pepsi, second and third homes and wives, and whole milk.

Statutory rape base ages due to be lowered (aka JSO on crack).

Many, many different gods from different galaxies to be the brain trust, cowboys vs indians to be revisited.

Why do I get worked up? Because it DIRECTLY effects me - and on an big economic scale.
It's blather. Nothing more. He's pandering to the religious right, courting their vote in the primary. It's how the process works. Don't get your panties in a bunch.
I think Santorum might actually believe at least some of his blather.

dbackjon wrote:Rick Santorum says that if elected he would ensure that all existing same-sex marriages will be nullified. That's not too surprising actually, but that's a step further than we've heard from the other GOP tools.
There are 18,000 married gay and lesbian couples in California and at least 131,000 nationwide according to the 2010 census, conducted before New York state legalized same-sex marriage in July. Rick Santorum says he'll try to unmarry all of them if he's elected president. Once the U.S. Constitution is amended to prohibit same-gender marriages, "their marriage would be invalid," the former Pennsylvania senator said Dec. 30 in an NBC News interview. "We can't have 50 different marriage laws in this country," he said. "You have to have one marriage law."

Believing his own blather and actually being able to ACT on his blather are two entirely different things.
