Shit, Joe how many churches are left? They're closing schools, programs and churches left and right. Add that to the bankrupt dioceses and priest shortages and you have one helluva pickle.

You losing your youth to people like me too at high numbers. The average age of a practicing catholic has got to be in the 60's. Every mass I go to is an electric scooter infomercial.

Joe, seriously, where do you see the church in 50-100 years?

If ever make it out here, you can check the place out. It is packed. If you don't get there early, you may not get a seat, even in the overfill seating in the auditorium. Alive, vibrant, 56 active ministries running assistance programs, including one which sends medical professions to Haiti every year (you may have heard a news story a little while back that there was a church group of medical professionals stranded in Haiti due to violence and at potential risk-- my church).

The church in 50-100 years will still be here, as important and vital, but better and wiser than today. I also think that within the foreseeable future, there will be a pope from Africa or South America -- and this will bring a fresh perspective to Vatican thinking.

You're wrong that the Church is dying. You'd actually feel pretty good about it if you saw my church.

Oh, I know I would. Worked for the catholics for many great years. They aint fucking around when it comes to helping people in tough shape.

Joe, did contraction cause those numbers or are you guys just kicking ass there?

Pivotal time right now for you - a rigid and archaic Vatican leadership barely able to connect with today's youth. The scandal aint gonna kill you, I think it's going to be the dogma. It tough getting a message like that across to a kid who has the entire world of knowledge and entertainment at his fingertips.

Look at that atheist heathen, Youngterrior. Bright kid, from a very religious and cool family, melts our faces with his atheism. :ohno:

Crazy world.

Teenager testing his ideas. Nothing wrong with that. But life changes people. You know what I know for sure? That we experience about 1%, or less, of what is truly real. So at one point I decided to stop being condescending about people who thought there was a God. And it's funny, but after I said that, the existence of God started to become more and more apparent to me from what I could infer from what was around me.

I think Erasmus said that smallest concession to prevenient grace is often all that is required.

I will try to remember to bring home a bulletin next week. They post the attendance every week. We have Saturday @ 5pm (always packed), Sunday @8am (small crowd), @ 10am (packed), @ Noon (medium crowd) and @ 5pm (medium crowd). My immediate area is packed with Catholics and Jews. Go into NW DC and you find all Protestants.

A little of both. Our parish has 3,100 families, and it is a regional church for the most part. Many people come from towns nearby because they prefer this church to their more local church. As for us, we go there largely because it is only about a few minute ride and it was my wife's church growing up. I often attend Mass at the church in town too, usually when we can't go as a family because one of the kids is sick, or we have some other plans that require us to "break up." (I frequently hit the Daily Mass there, though, if I can. :kisswink: ).

Also, the suburban church is the new model. The reason inner-city parishes are closing is because the children of the first and second generation Catholic immigrants have "made it" and moved to the suburbs.

The numbers overall are still consistent, though. Catholics are still about 25% of the population, and about 35% of Catholics attend Mass every week, which means that there are 30,000,000 Catholics in church every Sunday. Weekly collection plates total over $6 billion annually.

I keep hearing reports that the numbers are shrinking, and yet every priest I know says, in their experience, it is not true.

I'm not going to deny there are problems with the institutional church; but there are many, many great things that never get as much attention as the bad things. Personally, I think it would be great to get an African or South American as the next pope, and it may happen. The church is growing rapidly in those parts of the world. Ironically, I think a fresh perspective and the excitement of someone without a Euro-centric outlook heading the Church would actually bring back many people in Europe. Honestly, many people I know who have stopped going to Church will admit to wanting to find a reason to go back. And, if you are being truthful, after a few beers, you would say the same thing too, I bet.

BTW, if betting on the next pope is your thing, here's a website where you lay your money down.

Notice that the two with the best odds are a Nigerian and a Ghanania. And the guy with the fourth best odds is from Honduras.

They need to go Hispanic.

Truth is, Hispanics, unfortunately, are taking over the Western world.
