2012 - MVFC Predictions

Post by Bison Fan in NW MN »

2012 is going to be a tough one in the MV. 4-5 teams have a lefit chance of winning the conference IMO.

My 2$:

1. NDSU
2. Youngstown State
3. UNI
4. Illinois State
5. Indiana State
6. Southern Illinois
7. SDSU
8. WIU
9. USD
10. Missouri State

NDSU-YSU-UNI are the early favorites in my opinion. YSU is young and very talented....again. I think the Bison beat them in Fargo this year.

UNI - is always tough and consistently puts a good team on the field. There 2nd QB played pretty well in Fargo this year so IMO, he is a better thrower than Rennie. UNI loses a lot on defense but they always seem to reload. UNI/NDSU in CF is going to be a good one.

NDSU - has a lot returning from last year's NC team. Defense has the potential to be even better in 12. Areas of concern are WR and replacing 2 very good OL. If Vraa (WR) can stay healthy, he could be better than Holloway.

Illinois State and Indiana State could also be right there in the mix. The Redbirds have a very good defense that will keep them in every game. Even SIU could come on and make some noise this year. SDSU has the QB but needs a running game to compliment him and their defense needs to improve.

IMO, USD-MSU-WIU will not be in the mix this coming year.

NDSU just needs to find another home game.... :ohno:

Looks about right, at this time.

The case for SIU - 6 conference losses in row by 6,6,7,8,11, & 12pts. in the backup QBs first five starts after Mac went down in week 4; in all of them late in the 4th qtr, tells me that the personnel are there to finish in the top 3.

The QB question will be a tough one - McIntosh was leading the MVC with 288 yds/game when he went down. Kory Faulkner did pretty well for a sophmore whose first three starts were against NDSU, UNI, and YSU. He improved enough during the losing streak to hang 45 on EIU and ISU in the final two games.

Biggest shoes to fill, two All-America OL including the FCS Rimington C. Also need a difference making WR.

The sleeper for SIU, and imo what will be the difference between finishing in the top 3 or the next 3, will be the new S&C coach.

1. NDSU
2. YSU
3. ILSU
4. UNI

Not sure about the rest, but the top four should be very very good this year. I think YSU and ILSU are pretty similar insofar as their 'rebuilding' years appear to be over and they look to turn the corner and make a run at a title.

YSU's new defensive coordinator, Joe Tresey, (Former UCLA, Cincy, Central Michigan, USF, Georgia Southern D.C.) coupled with another recruiting class filled with additional depth on defense, should help improve YSU's awful defense from the past two years.

YSU will go only as far as their defense can take them. If they can give up just 20 ppg, I think they can be a legit title contender. If they give up 27 ppg again, then it may be another 6-5 to 7-4 type year.

Thinking NDSU and YSU could be 9-10 win teams and UNI and ILSU at 7-8 wins each.

The playoff loss in Missoula was a back-breaker but losing Minnet from the year before was huge for the Jacks. He was a very good RB that they could count on for 100 yd/game consistently. Hard, tough runner that was durable and played 4 yrs. Their QB is very good but needs a running game to keep teams "honest".

Hey houndawg: Will Lennon be on the "hotseat" if SIU finishes in the bottom half of the league?

I know clenz loves to bash YSU for their "reported attendance". Again this is from this past year vs. Illinois State when we had just under 19,000 in attendance:

You want me to post the photos and reported attendance again?

Funny, many of the games that are rumired to be grossly overestimated attendance don't have photos of the crowd, but yet when fans do show up there are hundreds of photos that game

If Youngstown improves on defense, they will be hard to beat this year. Offense could even be better this year.

The Bison/Youngstown game has turned into a good game every year.

It will start heating up, but he'll finish his contract here. I think the prevailing opinion is that he gets some slack for the past two seasons because of the injury bug. It's also noted that we didn't have as much problem with injuries when Eric Klein was the S&C coach in the Kill era. We're also going to have a couple more stud RBs from the Big 10 to replace Jewel Hampton.

Hate to lose him, kid got a lot of his yardage after contact. Wouldn't be surprised to see him make an NFL roster, we'll miss his last season but given his knees its a now or never type of thing. The frosh RB from Iowa is the son of former Heavyweight boxer Oliver McCall and the little brother of Jeneva McCall, SIU's national record setting weight thrower. His sr. year of high school had some injuries but ran for 1200 yards in five games. He is a physical specimen.

Losing Minnet hurt no doubt, but the major problem was the QB who was the starter for that game that quit last year. I know the circumstances for why he quit, but cannot and will not post them being as I have nothing to be able to post as a source and its not good form to smear someones name after they have left and moved on. But I will say that his head was not into football even 50% or into leading the team. What really needs to happen is for them to have some leaders step up on defense to provide a mental toughness that was so strong on the team that went to Montana (yeah yeah what type of mental toughness blows a lead like that). Losing players like Danny Batten (drafted), and huge emotional leaders like Jimmy Rodgers, a 180lb MLB and a few other key players it what I feel was the biggest problems with the team last year. Hopefully Sumner is going to change that, seems like the kid has what it takes. Time will tell, but they will be back. Also, being one of the lowest funded teams in the conference by a large margin does not help much.
