Americans' Satisfaction Almost as Low as It Was Under Carter

Americans' Satisfaction Almost as Low as It Was Under Carter

It's February, nine months before a presidential election, and only 22 percent of Americans say they are satisfied with the way things are going. Voters haven't been this unhappy with the country since George H.W. Bush's presidency, when only 21 percent of Americans reported being happy with the country's direction. And before that, the lowest approval rating was 19 percent during Jimmy Carter's first term.

What do the two presidencies have in common? Neither of them won re-election. And, if the trends holds true, Obama looks to be in an equally precarious situation.

The American Enterprise Institute for Public Policy Research released its 2012 campaign outlook, and it's clear Obama's sitting in the same position George H.W. Bush and Jimmy Carter were in during the February before their election losses—voters don't feel good about the country.

Bill Clinton, Ronald Reagan, and George W. Bush—presidents who won re-election—all had at least 41 percent of voters optimistic with the state of the union.

1) He still gets a pass for inheriting more of a mess than either Carter or Bush

2) There is not a Reagan or a Clinton running against him. (This is why a stronger candidate needs to be recruited into the republican primary)

You wish. Have you seen the fucking field the Republicans have managed to put together?
:rofl:

And, this isn't just an indictment on the Presidency. Let's take a look at approval ratings.

Republicans in Congress:
22%
http://www.pollingreport.com/cong_rep.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Democrats in Congress:
31%
http://www.pollingreport.com/cong_dem.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

President Barack Obama:
48.6%
http://www.realclearpolitics.com/epolls ... -1044.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Granted, Presidential approval ratings are almost always higher than Congress's... but, there's a fairly significant (and growing) gap between R's and D's in Congress. Adding the Presidential approval rating just rubs things in. ;)

I'm not sure if #1 will hold a lot of weight by the election but #2 is a definite problem. The Reps might be better off if they could find a way to come out of their convention with a new candidate as the party's nominee. The problem would be that said candidate would not have been vetted by the party faithful and it would reek of a smoke-filled, backroom deal. It could really alienate the tea party supporters but could present a candidate more appealing to swing voters.

true dat kalm...

I'd like to know the demographic breakdown of the 22%.

Gallup called me the other day but I was busy with a customer and couldn't answer the call (I know because I called back)... I wonder how many productive people are called for these polls but are too busy to answer, thus skewing the results as the less busy or moochers answer these calls.

But on another note how could anybody be satisfied with our country and our government right now? Our federal (and many state) government is a train wreck and the demographic/societal trend away from a nuclear family based society and toward a multi-cultural society is eating the country away from within.
