Coastal Carolina All-American tight end David Duran, who graduated from the University this past December, has been granted an extension of eligibility waiver by the Big South Conference and NCAA.
A first team preseason All-American heading into the 2011 season, Duran played sparingly for the Chanticleers as a fifth-year senior this past fall before ultimately having season-ending surgery on his shoulder. In four games this past season, he caught five passes for 75 yards. He needs just two more receptions to become the first tight end in Big South history to have 60 career catches. (Gardner-Webb's Josh Miller owns the Big South record for career catches by a tight end with 59.)

6th year? Has anyone ever heard of this happeneing before?
true, very rare. I think Richmond had two 6th year O-Linemen on their 2008 champ. team. I recall Syracuse having a handful the past decade. But I believe the player in question has to miss practically two whole seasons due to injury (like Duran). If you are redshirted out the gate your freshman year (NOT due to injury), then that leaves 4 years to play.
