San(i)tor(i)um Attacks President Obama's Faith

Post by mainejeff »

Imagine if this was reversed? :o :o :o

Santorum, a former Pennsylvania senator known for his social conservative policies, said that Obama's agenda is "not about you. It's not about your quality of life. It's not about your jobs. It's about some phony ideal. Some phony theology. Not a theology based on the Bible. A different theology."

I don't believe Santorum is Mormon.

If attending a racist church for 20 years and going to church less than I believe 3 times in office (look for more this year)
then I guess he has a faith...but not really

The one thing I cannot grt past is that this accusation is not about Obama's faith. It is about his political ideology (which some might call religion).

Obama is obviously a Christian, and Santorum's quote also obviously had nothing to do with that.

Misleading subject line, and as Klean would say, "typical!"

He probably should've been a little more nuanced and used a term like "false" instead of "phony." Even though they're close to the same meaning "false" is not quite as purjorative and it's prefectly legitimate for one person to opine that another subscribes to a false theology.

Obama does do things like saying that Jesus' direction to be charitable means Christians should support the idea of Government forcing people to be charitable whether they're Christian or not.

Obama is obviously a Christian,
Forgive me, but it's not obvious to me. It's obvious to me that he professes to be a Christian. But I really wonder if that's just a political calculation. I cannot prove it or be 100% sure I'm correct, but I do not think Obama is an honest man at all. I think he is a pure political animal who will say whatever he thinks he has to say to achieve his objectives. Not that that's unusual among politicians.

That isnt my point.

The subject line suggests that Santorum was attacking Obama's religious beliefs. Reading the actual passage indicates that this is not the case at all. Santorum was attacking Obama's political ideology.

It doesnt matter if Obama is a good Christian or not. He professes to be one, and that is fine. Nowhere in the article does Santorum suggest that Obama is a bad or phony Christian. If someone suggested to me that Obama was more attracted to the racial aspects of his favorite pastor's church than he is Christian aspect of it, then I might agree that his actions and statements (as well as those of his wife) tend to back this up. Still, it has nothing to do with what Santorum is saying here.

Uh, kalm, primary candidates jump their focus to the general election all the time. Romney was doing that weeks ago and you didn't say anything.

Kinda sounds like a double standard to me.

Ah, you make me wish for the sake of this discussion that I could honestly say I am a Christian. But I cannot, because I cannot honestly say I believe the fundamental cornerstone aspects of the faith.

Speaking of which: I wonder what Obama would say if, during a press conference where the issue of his Christianity came up, a reporter asked him, "Do you literally believe that Jesus Christ was the son of God and literally, physically, rose from the dead? Also, do you believe that the only way to the Father is through Christ?"

I think that would really put him on the spot. I think he would really squirm and I'm not at all sure that he could bring himself to answer "yes" to those questions.

I have no doubt that Santorum would immediately answer "yes" to all of them with no problem.

Now, one can say they'd be disturbed by someone answering yes to those questions without hestitation. Maybe they wouldn't want someone who did so to be President. But a true Christian would do it. And if I had to bet, I'd bet Obama wouldn't.

I don't think Christians should try to force others to actually live according to Christian morality. Like I don't think they should be involved in trying to outlaw exotic dance clubs, alcohol, prostitution, etc. I don't think they should be invovled in trying to outlaw homosexual behavior.

But there's no way to say that they shouldn't be involved in government or policy at all. Like the Abolitionists of the 19th Century were Christians. That was a Christian movement. They have just as much a right to try to affect laws based on what they think is right and wrong as anybody else does. I just wish they'd do it while remembering that the Christ described in the Bible never suggested that anybody be forced to follow him or his teachings.

Of course that includes not being forced to be charitable, etc. I don't think liberals mind when Christians support programs that force people to be charitable. Then it seems that legislating morality is OK.

Where has anyone been a hateful asshole? Santorum doesn't believe Obama's agenda is based on the Bible. Stonge has his beliefs and I don't think I have ever heard him say anything hateful.

You construe anything that doesn't conform to your belief system as hateful. That is crap dude.

In all fairness, you are not alone. A ton of people use that to try and "shame" a Christian.

My issue is that all the people that try that crap usually spew absolute venom and when any pushback is encountered, they question a persons Christianity. Bullshit.
