Warren, OH native Joe Tresey is going to be named the new defensive coordinator at Youngstown State in the next few days. He has an interesting past in coaching. Note he jumps from job to job, but two of the departures were due to the head coach and entire staff being fired (USF and UCLA).
2011: Defensive Coordinator at UCLA (Neuheisel Fired - Lost Job)
2010: Holtz becomes new coach at USF so he loses his job and coaches in semi-pro.
2009: Defensive Coordinator at South Florida (Left Cincy to Join USF, Top 30 FBS defense)
2007-2008: Defensive Coordinator at Cincinnati (Moved with Kelly to Cincy, Top 30 FBS defense)
2006: Defensive Coordinator Central Michigan (Brian Kelly)
As most of you know, YSU has a top 5 offense, with a terrible defense. Our recruiting class was heavy on defense with a ton of players in the secondary recruited from Florida and California = Speed.
Hopefully a guy with experience as a defensive coordinator in the Pac 12, Big East, and a solid MAC school can help lead YSU to the promised land and a run at a title.
Oh yeah, he was D.C. at Georgia Southern back in the day too!

And of course he left Statesboro because Mike Sewak was fired. Poor guy can't seem to get on a team where there's any stability.
His defenses were usually pretty good, except for that first round disaster at Texas State in 2005.

Didn't realize that firing as well! Wolford will be in year 3 of a 5 year contract so if he wants, he likely can stay for three more seasons if the rebuilding translates into playoff births the next three seasons as many FCS fans would expect of a team that improved from 3-8 to 6-5 in a season with a win over #1 NDSU. Of course our piss-poor defense cost us a playoff spot in blowing it vs. Missouri State in Week 12.

I, as well as most of the GSU faithful, thought Tresey did a good job at GSU and was sad to see him go. He did the best he could given the personnel situation he was given, which saw the team ravaged by injuries and attrition on that side of the ball.
He coached an aggressive style of play and when he had the horses his defenses were pretty good.

The previous D.C., Rick Kravitz, was put into a tough spot from the start. He was forced to start a dozen true freshmen on defense in his first two years at YSU. That is a recipe for absolute disaster, hence the meltdown against Missouri State. They attacked a true freshmen in the 4th quarter and it cost us the game.
Our piss-poor secondary has been the reason we have stunk in recent years. We bring back up 3 starters that missed all of last year due to injuries at corner, and should have enough depth at safety to compete for a long run in the tournament.
We should continue to average between 36-40 points per game because we lose pretty much nobody on offense again and the OL will be loaded with depth.
If we can cut our defensive ppg to 20-22ppg, we have a chance to be special. It went from 35 to 27 this past year. It can be cut by at least another touchdown in my eyes.
