Berry Tramel: Who is Savannah State?

Oklahoma State football: Who is Savannah State?
A new low comes to Oklahoma State football on Sept. 1. Maybe a new low for Big 12 football. The worst program to ever grace a Big 12 schedule.

OSU hosts Savannah State on Sept. 1, and there is no pleasant way to put this. Savannah State will be the worst opponent the Cowboys have ever played, at least going back to World War I. I can’t speak for some of the teacher colleges of the Woodrow Wilson era. But Savannah State will be the worst in at least 90 years.

There is no shame in Stillwater when it comes to scheduling.

Savannah State is a Division I-AA program in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference. Savannah State joined the MEAC for the 2010 season and was independent the eight years before that. Before 2002, Savannah State was NCAA Division II, the level at which Central Oklahoma and Southwestern State play.
Kinda over the top...especially coming from a OU guy when the Sooners are playing FAMU this year.
MEAC, last one out turn off the lights.

Well...FAMU's been a lot better than Savannah State. I can remember using Savannah State as an example of how stupid it is for the playoff committee to automatically consider a "D-!" win better than a "D-II" wins as a lot of D-IIs each year would have blown D-! Savannah State off the field.

Savannah State finished 1-10 last year. The Sagarin Ratings had them finishing 241st out of 247 D-I schools.

I can remember reading that Bill Snyder of Kansas State said that, though they played a lot of I-AA/FCS games, he wanted to schedule I-AA/FCS teams that were good within their own subdivision. Obviously Oklahoma State isn't like that.

OSU played Montana State and only won by 5. I think we had some red-headed QB that year....What was his name?

Florida A&M was the only team from the MEAC that advaced through FCS playoffs in the early part of the millenium

Florida A&M had a major headstart in D1 over Savannah St.

Be that as it may, Savannah State is a very weak FCS opponent for a BCS league program to play. I'm not sure it's not the weakest ever. I'd have to do some research that I'm not going to do in order to see but I wouldn't be surprised.

As an aside: Old Dominion was in only its third year of having a football program last year and I think they were good enough to have a shot to beat anybody in FCS. Georgia Southern won one I-AA national championshiip in the fourth year of its football progam then one another one in the fifth year (plus two more in years seven and eight).

Of course...we can also say that North Dakota State hasn't been in Division I that long. So on and so forth.

Savannah State just has a bad football program. Really bad. It's always possible that they could turn the corner and become a good football program. But I don't think it's likely that's going to happen before they play Oklahoma State.

ESPN rated Prairie View's team in the 90's as the worst ever. With an 80 game losing streak, it's hard to argue with that. (Not sure when this list came out)

Hard to argue with Prairie View of the 90s losing streak as even worse but what I was talking about is maybe being the worst I-AA/FCS to ever play a BCS league school. I'm not sure but I don't think Prairie View played a BCS league or BCS league type school back then.

Baloney. FAMU last won a playoff game in 99', the last time a MEAC team won a playoff game. The MEAC hasn't won a playoff game this millenium.
