Not really. We just don't really know what we have... we've got RS Jr and a RS Fr who have little and no college playing experience. Both are talented, but neither have been really tested. Unknown depth, but not necessarily weak. I'm sure you spouted off the same garbage when Erik Meyer graduated, and Matt Nichols graduated...kemajic wrote:The depth must be pretty bleak over there if you're looking for a true freshman to come in and compete for the job.EWURanger wrote:Congrats to this kid and UM, was really hoping we'd get him. I do think it was a poor decision for him, though, as he probably would have had a chance to compete for a starting spot next fall at EWU, maybe, while the Griz have like 6 different QB's on their roster. Have fun with that.
But congrats anyway, he looks like a good player.![]()
I am still wondering what we are going to pull out of our asses in regards to QB's.

Re: EASTERN WASHINGTON NEEDS MALIK WATSON
From the perspective of live game experience, I think it's just a situation where we don't really know what we've got. Trying to replace a Payton Winning QB isn't easy, but I would say it's not entirely out of the ordinary for a Freshman to come in and compete right away for either playing time or the starting position. We are in the same situation as we were in going into 2006. Matt Nichols played as a true Freshman, and he turned out to be a 4 year starter and statistically the best QB to play in Big Sky Conference history. Look at Lulay at MSU. It's not unheard of.kemajic wrote:The depth must be pretty bleak over there if you're looking for a true freshman to come in and compete for the job.EWURanger wrote:Congrats to this kid and UM, was really hoping we'd get him. Re: EASTERN WASHINGTON NEEDS MALIK WATSON
Nichols was the most prolific passer in Big Sky history, but not the best—even statistically. Dickenson & Meyer had noticeably better efficiency ratings. And Dickenson would hold the yardage record if playoff stats counted back then (& he was only a three-year starter).EWURanger wrote:From the perspective of live game experience, I think it's just a situation where we don't really know what we've got. As for the freshman thing: Nichols ended up being quite good, but he was quite mediocre as a freshman. 2012 could be a good year for Eastern in terms of building for the future, but probably won't be a good year by itself.
Re: EASTERN WASHINGTON NEEDS MALIK WATSON
Agreed on Nichols. He sort of had a baptism by fire as a true Freshman, but it ended up paying pretty big dividends when you look at his career as a whole. As for next year, there is reason for optimism there: 8 returning starters on both sides of the ball. Yes, some holes to fill, but that is the case every year. The biggest factor will be QB play - our system relies heavily on it. Vitto will be a Junior who has had 3 years in the program already, so I tend to think he will be the man. But whoever does end up being the number 1 is going to have a ton of weapons to play with, to include a very experienced and talented wide receiver corp (probably the deepest in the BSC) and some very talented young backs. We'll see how it goes.Mvemjsunpx wrote:EWURanger wrote:As for the freshman thing: Nichols ended up being quite good, but he was quite mediocre as a freshman. 2012 could be a good year for Eastern in terms of building for the future, but probably won't be a good year by itself.

This. And as I've said before, ODU, Montana, Montana State, and SHSU all had underclassmen QB's last season. Given Beau Baldwin and QB coach Zack Hill's track record in developing and coaching two Payton award winners that bookend Matt Nichols, I don't think there will be as much drop as some might think.EWURanger wrote:Agreed on Nichols. Seems Watson is available if EWU still wants him.

We've got our Freshman Qb signing already. And from all the drama Re: his recruitment with Montana, I'm not even sure he'd be worth pursuing at this point. The whole thing is just really strange. Did he get offered by UM or not? Let'em go to Texas Southern or wherever. I only want us to get kids who want to come to EWU.SeattleGriz wrote:Seems Watson is available if EWU still wants him.
My guess is we're reserving a schollie for a transfer......rumor is Kyle Padron is visiting in a couple weeks. Or so he says...

Yeah, that's not a rumor, as he stated he was visiting EWU on his twitter. Unless you mean that we can't take his word for it a la the Malik Watson debacle.EWURanger wrote:We've got our Freshman Qb signing already. No, I hope we can take his word for it and he does end up tripping. I guess my point was you can't always take everything on the interwebs 100% seriously. Should be interesting.....we got Mitchell to come in, but he was also heavily recruited by EWU coming out of HS. Probably wasn't the case so much with Padron.Screamin_Eagle174 wrote:Yeah, that's not a rumor, as he stated he was visiting EWU on his twitter. No, but I'm sure the two still keep in touch, and Padron knows what BLM was able to accomplish here. He should play some catch with Kauf and Edwards while he's here, and he'll be sold.EWURanger wrote:No, I hope we can take his word for it and he does end up tripping. Re: EASTERN WASHINGTON NEEDS MALIK WATSON
Supposedly he posted on this twitter account he wasn't coming to Montana. Almost as if they never offered him. From the guys that have been stalking him, they at least say he seems like a really nice kid, so they don't assume he would be making crap up for fun. Very confusing.Grizalltheway wrote:da fuck?SeattleGriz wrote:Seems Watson is available if EWU still wants him.

Re: EASTERN WASHINGTON NEEDS MALIK WATSON
You gotta assume that there was at least some form of contact between him and UM. Maybe it's possible that he was a little confused about how recruiting actually works. It's weird that he initially said he was offered by UM, but then if you read what the UM staff has said, it appears not so much. Recruiting is a pretty ruthless game, and sometimes these kids have all kinds of people telling them different things and building them up so it's gotta be rough when those plans fall through.SeattleGriz wrote:Supposedly he posted on this twitter account he wasn't coming to Montana. Watson was a QB that I thought EWU was really high on, again if you look at rivals it says we offered him. I thought the same thing about a couple other QB's, to include the Drew Austin kid. After digging a little deeper, come to find out we weren't recruiting these guys that much at all. Austin signed with CWU, so the report on his offer from EWU was incorrect as well. Just goes to show you sites like rivals and scout can be very inaccurate when it comes to FCS and you don't really know the truth until signing day, despite what people are claiming prior to.

Re: EASTERN WASHINGTON NEEDS MALIK WATSON
CWU got him? Damn, they always snag some great athletes. I hope we're not dumb enough to schedule them again anytime soon. They've kept it within a score or beat every BSC team they've played in the last 6 years it seems.EWURanger wrote:You gotta assume that there was at least some form of contact between him and UM.
