White Horse Prophecy

Post by kalm »

Is Mitt's religion fair game? Will it come out more if the primary drags on? Will Obama use it? Does it matter to you?
Romney avoids mentioning it, but Smith ran for president in 1844 as an independent commander in chief of an “army of God” advocating the overthrow of the U.S. government in favor of a Mormon-ruled theocracy. Challenging Democrat James Polk and Whig Henry Clay, Smith prophesied that if the U.S. Congress did not accede to his demands that “they shall be broken up as a government and God shall damn them.” Smith viewed capturing the presidency as part of the mission of the church. He had predicted the emergence of “the one Mighty and Strong” — a leader who would “set in order the house of God” — and became the first of many prominent Mormon men to claim the mantle.

Smith’s insertion of religion into politics and his call for a “theodemocracy where God and people hold the power to conduct the affairs of men in righteous matters” created a sensation and drew hostility from the outside world. But his candidacy was cut short when he was shot to death by an anti-Mormon vigilante mob. Out of Smith’s national political ambitions grew what would become known in Mormon circles as the “White Horse Prophecy” — a belief ingrained in Mormon culture and passed down through generations by church leaders that the day would come when the U.S. Constitution would “hang like a thread as fine as a silk fiber” and the Mormon priesthood would save it....

Called a “militant millennial movement” by renowned Mormon historian David L. Bigler, Mormonism’s founding theology was based upon a literal takeover of the U.S. government. In light of the theology and divine prophecies of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, unamended by the LDS hierarchy, it would seem that the office of the American presidency is the ultimate ecclesiastical position to which a Mormon leader might aspire. So it is not the LDS cosmology that is relevant to Romney’s candidacy, but whether devout 21stcentury Mormons like Romney believe that the American presidency is also a theological position.

Since his first campaign in 2008, Romney has attempted to keep debate about his religion out of the political discourse. The issue is not whether there is a religious test for political office; the Constitution prohibits it. Instead, the question is whether, past all of the flip-flops on virtually every policy, he has an underlying religious conception of the presidency and the American government. At the recent GOP presidential debate in Florida, Romney professed that the Declaration of Independence is a theological document, not specific to the rebellious 13 colonies, but establishing a covenant “between God and man.” Which would suggest that Mitt Romney views the American presidency as a theological office.
Romney is the product of this culture.

I don't give a rats ass what religion you are, but for POTUS perhaps some of them should sit this one out.

To me anybody who is gullible enough to believe in these silly religions is probably too dumb to be president, but the cost of admitting to be a non-believer is too much for any candidate to tell us their true feelings. I will be sitting this one out again.

Salon, eh?

At least it wasn't Rolling Stone!

Just another hit piece. His religion has no effect on his ability/inability to lead.

But for the sake of argument... :geek:

Assuming it DID...

...would being an LDS be any worse than Barack's spiritual indoctrination under...

Please, Kalm, tell me how the Church of Latter Day Saints in ANY WAY is more hateful, racist and Anti-American than Rev. Wright and the United Church of Christ?

The good news is most of them probably don't believe that nonsense.

The bad news is that the new millenium showed us that there is no, or at least a very high, limit on stupidity in the oval office.

The Mormons weren't the only people preaching rebellion in the mid 1800s. In fact it was another religious sect (Protestants, mostly Presbyterians, Baptists and Methodists) that actually DID foment rebellion, so I don't think Obama will want to go there.

If Obama actually has the temerity to go after Mitt on religion, then he truly is the king of fakes.

No, he is the yet to be embraced nominee of the Republican Party apparently, and that would make him much better than Obama, or any other Democrat of course, those who have not climbed on the bandwagon yet will eventually, even AZ.

Much more palatable for the conks to line up behind a space ghost worshiper than tolerate that black guy that probably wasn't even born in the USA as JBB and the rest of you guys have been insisting.

Conks!

Romney's Mormonism is the least of my worries about him - although it was before my time, I'd equate the fear of Mormon with the fears about Kennedy's Catholicism in the early 60's. :twocents:

No, Obama is the embraced nominee of the Democratic Party that is rich, but not as rich as Romney, and that would make him much better than Romney, or any other Republican of course, those who have not climbed on the bandwagon yet will eventually, even those pesky Southern Baptists who would take a black man over a Mormon.

Much more palatable for the donks to line up behind an invisible, omnipotent white man/god with a long beard in the sky that impregnated a virgin with himself to be born, live, and crucified by those he came to save and will accept you with a little faith, but will damn you to the fiery depths without said faith worshiper than the ridiculous wealthy businessman?

Donks!

Mormon agenda? I was pointing to his judgement, that is the sanity/insanity of tithing 4.1 million dollars to a religion based on space gods, and gods being created here at the Temples, and his own design and belief that he too will become a god someday, you conk fuckers just don't get that because all you see is #1 a democrat in office, #2 a nigger democrat in office, and #3 (see #1 and #2)

LMAO at this whole process this year, and the fact that Romney is the nominee apparent. Damn few people outside of the intermountain west have a clue as to what is really going on within this cult, but that does not matter to the partisans here who will climb on his back when there are no more backs to climb onto, just as long as they get rid of that coon in the white house.

I didn't vote for him in the SC primary and as I mentioned his religion is the least of my worries about his candidacy.

Obama's race has nothing to do with why another 4 yrs scares me...the first 4 have demonstrated what we have to look forward to (I guess you're OK with that.....) :coffee:

I don't exactly live in the Mormon belt so you’ll forgive my lack of full understanding of the religion that some of you adjacent to Utah may have. Personally I look more at the fiscal side of things being that I’m a fiscal conservative and social moderate. My concerns with Romney are really more about the waffling.

He’s got a pile of money and he donated some to his church. Big deal. It’s a lot of money, but no greater a percentage than you’ll find many Protestants and Catholics tithing. :twocents:

We have what we have because the American electorate put them there. The partisans started howling about money spending before Obama spent the first dime in his administration, these are the same partisans that stood by while the past Republican administration completely trashed our economy, military, and country all together, many of them lining their pockets along the way. Then came the "tea party" the biggest bunch of racist pukes I have ever seen hanging out in front of a court house crying about the money Obama was going to spend trying to avoid an economic depression.

You assholes are just so damned disappointed that the depression was averted, except for your mental ones you do not know what to do.

Nobody has spent any time explaining as to how much better off our country would be if McCain/Palin had taken office, maybe because there was never any danger in that happening in the first place, but I think we would be in much worse shape than we are, of course you disenfranchised conk partisans would then be doing all the backfilling and apologizing for them right now.

Your party is now so fucked up you consider Alan Simpson to be a liberal, and will accept no advice from him at all, even though all of it has been nearly 100% sage and it was in fact asked for.

Now you ignorant assholes are going to put a space ghost in the Presidential race!
