I wish they'd quit televising State of the Union addresses

Post by JohnStOnge »

I'm talking about regardless of who is in office. What is the point? Does anybody expect an objective assessment of the "State of the Union." They are just political speeches. Propaganda. And they interfere with the television menu.

If they were true assessments of the State of the Union I could go for it. But they're not. Why do the TV networks continue to inflict these things as well as the obligatory opposition responses on us?

Well, I believe that I must tell the truth
And say things as they really are
But if I told the truth and nothing but the truth
Could I ever be a star?

Agree.
"Sarah Palin absolutely blew AWAY the audience tonight. If there was any doubt as to whether she was savvy enough, tough enough or smart enough to carry the mantle of Vice President, she put those fears to rest tonight. She took on Barack Obama DIRECTLY on every issue and exposed... She did it with warmth and humor, and came across as the every-person....it's becoming mroe and more clear that she was a genius pick for McCain."

Throwing this sentence in there doesn't change anything. If a Republican was in the White House and it was a presidential election year... you would not start this thread. You know it. I know it. Why bother trying to bullshit it?

You could be right. Hard to say. This is the first time I ever posted that but I only started using the internet in 1997 or so. But I can honestly say I haven't watched a "State of the Union" address or any of the responses for as long as I can remember.

It just got to me last night because I come home after a long day wanting to watch TV then see that there's going to be a State of the Union address. And I do like to watch news. So what this means is that for the next couple of days all I'm going to hear about is the State of the Union address. So that means there's going to be nothing interesting to watch news channel wise. Thank God for the military channel because Sci Fi has really gotten to the point of sucking most of the time. Same with the History Channel and Discover. Chiller, which I just recently became aware of, is a little better but not much.

And college football season is over.

"Water, water everywhere. Nor any drop to drink."

Hundreds of channels yet nothing but crap to watch.

As a child/early teen I watched some of Reagan's. Watched a couple of Bush's daddy's. In college-1st couple of years out of college watched at least half of Clinton's. Watched most of Bush's 1st 6. But I haven't watched the last 5 SOTUs, Bush's last 2, and Obama's. They are:

-Too long
-Boring
-Are campaign speeches
-Written by someone else
-Read off of a teleprompter
-Give generalities, lofty rhetoric, themes without giving you specific and details on the how, with some BS thrown in.

-1st part if all the footage of people walking in, then the POTUS taking forever to get to the podium since he has to stop and shake every swinging di**s' hand- who give a f about that?
-Then some blah, blah, blah, then a long pause for people to stand up and clap. Repeat that about 50 times over and over and over (Congress gets some good exercise with all the up & downs).
-Then the POTUS taking forever to get to go from the podium to exit since he has to stop and shake every swinging di**s' hand- who give a f about that?

So you have about 1 hr for maybe 20 min of speech that doesn't tell you jack squat in terms of specifics and details with a large dose of BS thrown in.

Why would anyone watch that?
