We have no official religion but it's not really correct to say that we are a "secular" state in the sense many people are trying to use that word. Our state is premised on the belief in a Creator.

US is founded on Christian beliefs, Christianity is founded on Judeo beliefs, Judaism is based on Zoroastrian beliefs, Zorastrianism is based on Hindu beliefs, Hinduism is based on Brahman beliefs, Brahmanism is based on Indo-Aryan beliefs, and so on...

Yeah, men that founded this country were, for the most, Christians and used those ideals. BUt, we aren't a Christian nation.kalm wrote:I thought we were founded on the principles of the enlightenment.Ibanez wrote:

AT the founding, you could go to parts of Manhatten and not hear a word spoken in ENglish. You can go to parts of South Carolina today and not hear English. OUr native tounge is English.89Hen wrote:We also have no official language, but we are an English speaking nation (for now).Ibanez wrote:

I always felt bad for the Jahova Witness kids that weren't allowed to join our holiday school parties when I was a kid. They had to leave or sit to the side. I bet they kind of hated the holidays because of the awkward position they were put in by those parties.Ibanez wrote:Exactly. Everyone should (and legally do) have the freedom to pray whenever, whereever. The schools (unless private) cannot force a student to pray or partake in religious ceremonies and practices. An innocent Christmas party for 2nd graders is harmless, IMO. I think there needs to be common sense.89Hen wrote: Meh. Forced to pray and not allowed to pray are very different IMO.

Perry and Gingrich didn't qualify for the Va. primary:

8,100,000 people, and getting 10000 is a "daunting task?"Jerry Kilgore, former attorney general and chairman of Perry’s campaign in Virginia, said he was disappointed, but that qualifying for the Virginia ballot is a “daunting task.”

The real reason Romney will still win - there are only two candidates in the GOP primary with a legitimate ground operation - Romney and Paul.∞∞∞ wrote:Perry and Gingrich didn't qualify for the Va. primary:

LDS= Space based religion where top procreating and tithing members aspire to the level of God placed in rule of his own world or network of worlds and in line with the already unbelievably expansive hierarchy of worlds.TwinTownBisonFan wrote:The real reason Romney will still win - there are only two candidates in the GOP primary with a legitimate ground operation - Romney and Paul.∞∞∞ wrote:Perry and Gingrich didn't qualify for the Va. primary:

He actually must tithe what the church tells him he must, usually 10% of gross, and they will hound and attach to collect, so he gives the LDS millions of dollars a year in tithing. I would say that is an indicator that he believes in it in it's entirety and the Presidency is just a great gig to have on his resume for a future much, much bigger gig.

It's odd, but over time I've actually become much more comfortable in his Mormonism. Just as I believe Catholics are fully capable of separating their personal spiritual lives from their political ones sufficiently to govern - so too are Mormons.Wedgebuster wrote:LDS= Space based religion where top procreating and tithing members aspire to the level of God placed in rule of his own world or network of worlds and in line with the already unbelievably expansive hierarchy of worlds.TwinTownBisonFan wrote:

I have no doubt Romney's faith guides what he does - just as I believe that of Tim Pawlenty or Keith Ellison or Barack Obama... that doesn't bother, nor does it scare me in and of itself. What tends to scare me are those who, rather than be guided by their faith - are ruled by it - and would seek to rule others with it. Romney does not seem to be one like that. He is far too pragmatic to ever allow himself to be wholly co-opted... which is a good thing. Bachmann, Santorum, et al... THAT kind of religiosity scares me.
Romney shouldn't be President for a host of reasons - but they are political in nature, not religious in my opinion.
