Hopefully he can get the job done at Weber, we want to win the Sky, get back to the playoffs, and win a real National Championship  :notworthy:

Good luck coach

a few notes from the press conference

Jerry Bovee, WSU Athletic Director:
-Smith/Mac met with team together
-I went to Arkansas to interview Smith
-I have known him for 17 yrs (I was in Marketing at USU)
-We were looking for someone that knew the culture of the state, recruiting, dynamics of the Big Sky, Integrity, doing it the right way, Smith is a WSU alum, played here, [Gridiron member]. He has a method to his madness, reason why he does what he does. He can create an environment for success, he has a pattern of success.

Ann Milner, Univ President:
-Said a few words
-Gave John L 2 WSU ties

John L. Smith, Weber State Head Coach:
-Glad to come back to my school and blessed for opportunity to build on Mac's foundation and success.
-a few years ago, a farm boy from Idaho walked around here and walked around this stadium and said I made it to the big time. Since then I've been to the shoe, both valleys (laughs), where Rockney & Bryant were.
-Today I drove around and saw the new facilities, got out of the car and still thought the same thing. Happy and thankful to be here.
-Meeting with administration, goals, vision, our goal is to make WSU an national champion in football, that is our goal, we are gonna tell recruits that, that is what we are are gonna get done. But we are gonnna ask everyone from the student body to the administration, faculty, to the fans, boosters, everyone has to get involved or it won't work. Everyone has to believe, spout it out. Lets serve notice and make it happen.
-At Arkansas we had a motto: the dream is free, th journey is not. The journey begins now.

Media Questions:

Staff changes?
-This afternooon, will meet with current staff and compile the staff. Met some players already, some are gone because school is now out.
-Then onto recruiting.

Motivation?
-I've always had a place in my heart for Weber State, that love has always been there. To comeback and run your own program is cruitial for me. My opportunity to give something back to the university. And there is a ski hill right here! (Laughs as he points to Snow Basin)

Thoughts on conference realignment. You saw that coming?
-No. It's not over either by any means. In the Big Sky our fit is tremendous.
-We have a playoff system
-We need to go win the championship

Your relationship with Mac?
-We've had a rough relationship over the years. (laughing) He's always been a classy individual that treated me with class. I'll be contacting him for opinions on facilities, recruiting, players...etc. Mac is loyal to this program. We've had a good relationship.

How much have you followed Weber over the years?
-I've always tried to follow WSU over the years but haven't had the time to get back to certain things/events because of bad timing having been a coach. Haven't been as involved but have always made an effort to stay involved.

What about playoffs at all levels?
-The more we can reward the better, I really like the bowl system. I don't want it to go away. I think they will have a playoff soon because there is so much money. Like FCS, we had a four team playoff, then 8 now it's 20. I see FBS growing, it is inevitible.

Mac's MAFU motto, will you use it? I forget what it stands for.
-Must not have been a very good mottow if you can't remember it. (laughs)
-We'll look into all those things, we want to build on it, move forward. A little culture change, I'm a different guy, this is just the they way it goes.

Why was it crutial to be a WSU head coach?
-wanting to run your own program is special, I have a lot to offer, I'd be good with the young men. He said a few other things but they Internet feed cut to a commericial.

My wife is packing as we speak in Arkansas, need to go back and pack my office, say goodbye to the coaches, players, Patrino brothers. Then move my wife to Louisville, then sell our house. Then move to Utah. She is anctious to get here.

Will you still be a coach at Arkansas?
-Too much to do here. Might go back for the bowl game though. I'm here now.

What was your first contact with Weber State?
I think I called Bovee and said I know who can coach. (laughs)

Have you talked to Dave and Sark Arslanian?
-Dave and I text daily, not Sark, I hear he is doing well.
-The special people in my life are my dad, my high school coach, Sark, they are all influences on my life, and their philosophies and beliefs are are combinations of who the coach is I am today. I was teammates with Dave at WSU.

Sense of full circle? You have been a coach for 40 yrs. Is this last stop?
-It hasn't been that long. (laughs)
-I can go til I'm 90. (laughs)
-As long as I can ski. (laughs)

Timeframe for your goals?
-Starts today, now, the journey.

I saw a video last night of you at Ohio St, your energy, thought of cravens at EWU in 1999. (laughs)
-I get very excited, very emotional, I expect the players to do the same, that is what it is about. If I'm not like that, time to get out.

Comments about facilities?
-Gorgious, I don't want to tell you what was here in my day. (laughs) -For the Big Sky and FCS this is one of the best, do we need more? Yes, but not gonnna discuss it now. It's a building process. A lot of real good things.

Will you beat BYU-Utah?
-When is it? (laughs) (Someone says the game is next season)
-Are they coming here? (laughs)
-We'll look forward to that one. These are all surprises. Who else do we play? Don't tell me we play Utah in the same year? (laughs)

(Someone says it will be in the following year to Smith.)

-In the following year!? Athletic Directoers are great schedulers aren't they? (laughs)

Recruiting?
SLC airport, we can go to a lot of places not expensive. Helps for recruiting. We will expand, need to go where it is cost effective.

Scheme?
-My offense came from Dennis Erickson and John Elway's high school coach, spread offense, still use a tightend and fullback, doubletight, not afraid to spread it and throw it. Make it exciting, throw the ball. You have to run it to win. We better be tough enough. Offense and defense have to be tweakable. We will recruit the best players we can. Tweek the offense and defense to fit the players we have. Create a scheme they can play in.

Have you looked at past 2 seasons here at WSU?
-Not yet, basically it will be a study of personel
-More concerned with what the players we have can do more than the scheme we will use.

At the end of the press conference Smith put on an Under Armor WSU hat.bobandwaldo
