Bowls again demonstrate superiority of FCS thread

Post by S F State Gaters »

Boise State goes 11-1, and get the honour of 6-6 Arizona State in the MAACO. Southern Miss wins CUSA, goes 11-2, and gets a 7-5 UNR team... but at least it's in Hawai'i. Baylor has their best season pretty much ever, and get overlooked by the BCS who is obligated to take an autobided West Virginia team and are saddled instead with Washington. Voters decide they want TCU nowhere near the top-16 they need to get bidded, and end up against the WAC's best in La Tech. Similarly, the network decide they want nothing to do with them or the game, spending the modicum of time merely mentioning it. The number of ranked vs. unranked bowls, of worthwhile matchups, is laughable.

Watching the ESPN Bowl Selection Special just underlines again how inherently superior the Football Championship Subdivision is in so many ways, and underscores the deficiency of the sport as governed at the highest level.

The most egregious of these is the Sugar Bowl

Michigan (deserving)
against Va Tech - based ENTIRELY on ticket and hotel sales... sad.

Damn, i didn't even want to get started on the sugar. So wrong in so many ways. Passing over Boise and Kansas State is simply shameful

I will never watch a bowl again. Not that I watched many before. The system is so fucked.

And a team that couldn't win its conference gets voted into the title game. :ohno:

As a Michigan fan I couldn't be less excited about this game. All day yesterday talk was either TCU/Boise St or Kansas St. & instead we get a Va. Tech team that just got bombed in their very weak conference championship game & has zero impressive wins this year.

I'm a fan of the Wolverines too... I REALLY wanted TCU or Boise... would have made a good game to watch...

As it is - depending on my situation - I may see if I cant make my way down there for the game (I have a free place to stay in NOLA - plus - I could just drive the 6 hours to Frisco... if there was a need to get there)

There's just too much influence from the preseason polls. OSU's wins are far more impressive and much more in quantity to boot, and yet 'Bama is in the title game because their loss is better.

ps. I cringe to think what would've happened if LSU lost last night.

pps. VaTech in a BCS game is the biggest joke of all.

Even a plus one would be good.... Give the top 4 a shot. I don't give a crap that Oregon beat Stanford. Oregon lost twice.

Kansas St finishes #8 in the BCS rankings. Higher than ANY team from the Big 10, and higher than ANY team in the ACC. They are rewarded with no BCS bowl game, while the B10 and ACC combine for 4.

It's really a sad state of affairs for collegiate athletics when money trumps the hard work put forth by the student-athletes nearly year-round. I mean the people in charge of these things even say it blatantly:

VT/Michigan:
In this case, ticket sales meant more than rankings -- especially with the Sugar Bowl having to contend with a higher-profile game less than a week later.

Chief executive officer Paul Hoolahan said Virginia Tech's proven history of bringing fans to New Orleans was "extremely important," even though the Hokies only finished 11th in the BCS rankings.
Florida/Ohio St:
Ohio State's hiring of Meyer early last week gave officials for the TaxSlayer.com Gator Bowl a potential matchup they couldn't resist: Pitting Meyer's old team against his new one.

"Urban Meyer being hired is just another element to create more attention [for the bowl game]," said Gator Bowl chairman Greg Smith. "I think it creates more interest in the game so I think that's going to help us on ticket sales and overall national media attention."

[20 team playoff bracket, cut to save space in the quote]
Though in all likelihood, with a bracket that size, you'd probably have to include a few spots for AQs from weakling conferences.
Or perhaps not, since money rules the BCS, not the NCAA

Jay if you look at his bracket he has automatic qualifiers from all conferences included.

It is just gotten to a point where this bowl system in FBS football is absolutely laughably out of control. Just a ridiculous, embarrassing, money grab by everyone involved. A complete joke...

There ain't no way Boise would get a 10 seed in a playoff scenario....

Oh, wait. This is the NCAA we're talking about. Anything to keep teams from non-power conferences down....

The absolute worse was Alabama playing for the fake national title. Boise's screw job was pretty bad as well.

Just playing Devil's Advocate here...(Although I truthfully don't love the playoffs at any level, really.)

-Yeah but Boise knows what their standard is...don't go undefeated...don't go to the BCS.
-Southern Miss....lost to a terrible UAB team...case closed. Oklahoma State got the shaft for losing to team better than UAB...and you're complaining about Southern Miss?
-Baylor did have the best season ever, but you can't reward everybody....which brings me to my next point- You complain about ranked v. unranked bowls. 25 teams are ranked. The other 75+ are not. Odds are pretty good that you'll play an unranked team in the bowl, whether you are ranked or not.

Maybe, but maybe not. When was the last time we had #1 vs #2 in our NC game?
