Prince was recruited and signed from the state of Oklahoma where in his senior campaign he threw for 2,132 yards with 33 TDs and only 3 interceptions. His completion percentage was 72%. He also rushed for 627 yards and scored 12 TD. As a two year starter he threw for more than 4,500 yards and 51 TD; ran for 1,700 yards and 27 TD. He's close to the same size as the ODU QB (a little lighter and much faster).

GSU might not simulate the ODU offense perfectly in practice, but it won't be because they don't have a QB who can throw it.
2,132 yards? Our QB threw for double that his senior year. And what wide receivers are running routes for your scout team? 3rd or 4th team guys? We probably have 6 receivers as good or better than your best 2.
Good, for your sake I hope they are running your scout team offense this week.

McJunkins didn't play on a pass first, pass all the time team like the ODU QB, so trying to compare total yardage doesn't make sense. The fact that he completed 72% of his passes and threw for 33 TD with only 3 picks simply makes the point that he has some passing ability. The post I was responding to suggested that there was no way GSU had a QB who could throw the ball well enough to simulate the ODU passing attack.
Completing 72% of your passes on a team that is not a pass first, pass all the time team is easier to do than doing it on a team that passes a lot. The defenses we face do not put 8 in the box against us. They set their defense to stop the pass first. Completing 70% of passes against defenses designed to stop the pass is more impressive.

The point is that despite having not recruited spread offense type players, or pro style type players, our coach pointed out that your defensive players are very good and adapt well during the game against teams that run and recruit to those type of offenses.

I like how everybody isn't giving ODU a snowball's chance in hell of winning this game...win or lose it puts absolutely no pressure on the Monarchs. Also win or lose, it's still a hell of a year for a 3rd-year program.

Please don't tell me your coach actually said this:
This is a very good defense. Generally, you don’t see defenses that defend the pass as well as they do when your offense runs the triple-option. And the reason being, you don’t get the practice looks each week. But they make up for what they don’t see each week in practice with their athleticism."
Does he actually believe that all we practice against in game prep for our opponents is the TO?

Uhh, no. He's saying that since your QB isn't a great passer it's not like you've been able to simulate what facing a great passer is like--much like ODU can't face a real TO in practice. We can try to simulate it, but it isn't the same. And if you read the quote he actually said you guys do defend the pass well.

EDIT: Noted that you have a good HS passer in the fold.

GSU has faced the no huddle spread this year in a number of games, so it's not like they've never seen it.

Practice. We are talking about practicing against the spread.
Let's take a step back. Baldy insinuated that our coach's comments were comical.
Actually straightshooter, I don't think you commented on that quote. You may have only commented on my response. Tell me if you think that our coach's comment is off base.

Gee. We've never seen this disclaimer from ODU fans before.

If we win, YAY US!
If we lose, YAY US!

I guess we're also going to hear how it was the most devastating loss in playoff history, regardless of the fashion in which you lose.

I had no problem with your coach's quote. He's right. The GSU D is pretty good against passing offenses considering they run the option. Of course the scout team runs whatever offense GSU is facing in the next game after the season starts, so the defense only sees the option if GSU is playing an option team. Keep in mind too, that in 2008 and 2009, GSU ran the spread offense under a different coach, and many of the players on the current team were a part of that offense.

Personally, I hope they aren't either. They're busy enough sitting through position and team meetings plus watching film and practicing for this week's opponent plus balancing going to class and studying on top of it....

Has anyone heard of a scout team not using a ball when preparing for your team playing against a TO?
I heard that Mike London at UVA did this prepping for Ga. Tech. This idea is to get the defense to focus on assignments rather than the football. I thought that was a slick approach.

Too be honest, I THINK ODU might have done the same last year while preparing for Cal-Poly. I can see how it works though because defending the option is all about reading assignments.

I forsee ODU's football team seeing Georgia Southern's football team being sliced and diced and losing on their own homefield in Statesboro, Georgia. Of course, they will have to watch that on ESPN3 the week after they play there.

GSU won it in their 1st year, I believe.

Anyway agree with you and congrats, but GSU is gonna kill you.
