Week 10 - Conference by Conference Breakdown

Post by Mvemjsunpx »

Big Sky

SAC 20-29 PORTST
MTST 44-24 WEB
NOCO 14-34 NAU
WOU 7-32 UMT

  • NConf Record: 1-0
    Overall: 9-15

    vs. FCS: 0-0
    Overall: 2-4

Best Performance: (#2) Montana St. 44, Weber St. 24 - The Bobcats committed 4 turnovers & played poor defense for a while, but still put together a dominant 24-0 second half to get a convincing win.

Worst Performance: Northern Colorado 14, Northern Arizona 34 - The Bears won turnovers 2-0, but that's rarely good enough to overcome a 190-yard disadvantage in total offense.

Most Surprising Result: (#10) Montana 32, (DII) Western Oregon - The final score wasn't really surprising (WOU is a good DII team), but it is notable that Brody McKnight—by making 6 field goals—became the third Griz in two weeks to add his name to the school record books.

Southland

SFA 69-10 LAM
SHSU 38-9 SELA
UCA 45-20 NWST
NICH 17-26 MCNSE

  • NConf Record: 0-0
    Overall: 13-15

    vs. FCS: 0-0
    Overall: 3-1

Best Performance: (#25) Central Arkansas 45, Northwestern St. 20 - The Bears register 4 sacks & force 5 fumbles in a game that progressed much the same as the Montana State/Weber contest.

Worst Performance: Lamar 10, Stephen F. Austin 69 - Just like McNeese last week, the Cardinals suffer 9 sacks at the hands of the Lumberjack defense. They were also outgained 543-173.

Most Surprising Result: Stephen F. Austin 69, Lamar 10 - It's obviously too late to matter for this year, but the Lumberjacks have pounded their last 3 opponents by a combined 115 points.

Missouri Valley

SIU 34-45 SDKST
YSU 17-21 UNI
WIU 7-31 ILST
NDSU 27-16 INST

  • NConf Record: 0-0
    Overall: 13-12

    vs. FCS: 0-0
    Overall: 11-4

Best Performance: (#1) North Dakota St. 27, (#21) Indiana St. 16 - The Bison hold Shakir Bell to about half his average in cementing themselves further as the top team in the nation.

Worst Performance: Southern Illinois 34, South Dakota St. 45 - The Salukis become the latest team to fall victim to the apparently unstoppable Austin Sumner, who threw for 328 yards and 4 TDs on just 28 attempts.

    Most Surprising Result: (none)

OVC

CMETH 44-55 SEMO
TSU 18-17 EIU
EKU 52-48 JAXST
MUR 38-37 TTU
UTM 17-55 MSST
CENTST 0-40 AP

  • NConf Record: 2-1

    vs. FCS: 0-0
    Overall: 6-4

Best Performance: Murray St. 38, (#20) Tennessee Tech 37 - Racers add further proof to the notion that OVC leaders are never safe by winning in Cookeville for the first time since 1999.

Worst Performance: Southeast Missouri St. 55, (NAIA) Central Methodist 44 - The Redhawks won, but gave up 337 rushing yards and 5 rushing TDs to an NAIA team.

Most Surprising Result: (#18) Jacksonville St. 48, Eastern Kentucky 52 - Gamecocks pull a Chattanooga-on-crack by allowing 4 unanswered touchdowns in the final 7 minutes.

Patriot League

HC 7-14 LEH
COLG 24-37 LAF (OT)
FORD 13-30 GTOWN

  • NConf Record: 0-0
    Overall: 19-16

    vs. FCS: 0-0
    Overall: 19-15

Best Performance: (#8) Lehigh 14, Holy Cross 7 - Mountain Hawks don't light it up on offense, but do come away with their 8th. win over a solid opponent.

Worst Performance: Colgate 24, Lafayette 37 (OT) - Gavin McCarney throws a pick-six at the goal line to give the Raiders the dubious novelty of losing an overtime game by double digits.

Most Surprising Result: Georgetown 30, Fordham 13 - With the Hoyas' 8-2 record this year, Kevin Kelly only needs one more win to match the total from his first 5 seasons combined.

Tomorrow: the rest of the playoff conferences.

Most Surprising Result: Albany 17, Bryant 31 - More surprising than the result itself is that it doesn't really affect the NEC race at all: Albany still controls their own destiny & Bryant can't win the league anyway.

JMU 10-28 UNH
TOW 40-30 MAINE

Most Surprising Result: (#22) Liberty 37, VMI 31 - With two consecutive close wins over bottom-feeders, the Flames aren't exactly heading into their conference-title showdown with a huge amount of momentum.

MEAC

NCCEN 14-7 DSU
HOW 10-7 HAMP
NFOLK 45-3 SAV
NCAT 20-26 FAMU
MORG 23-49 BCOOK

Worst Performance: Samford 9, Tennessee-Chattanooga 24 - Bulldogs allow just 228 yards but can't get anything but field goals in the redzone.

Most Surprising Result: (#5) Georgia Southern 14, The Citadel 12 - The Eagles were 2 blocked extra points away from pushing their promising season into a free fall.

* - I know UMass is still technically in the CAA this year, but I'm counting them as FBS and as a non-conference opponent for CAA teams.

Tomorrow: non-playoff conferences & independents.

I agree with you this week, the worst performance was definitely WM, best was definitely Towson on the road against an undefeated conference opponent and the most surprising result was definitely Villanova over UMass. I bet UMass fans are starting to protest and want their current head coach to get the hell out of there.

If you have followed the entire season, there is nothing surprising about the GSU-El Cid outcome.

Technically there is no basement in the SWAC west (best division record could be 4-5) and Southern pretty much lucked in their three victories. I think Jackson St losing at home is a bigger disappointment.

I meant that TSU is currently in last place in the West (even after the Southern win).

JSU's loss was more disappointing, but it wasn't worse. Grambling is better than Texas Southern, so losing to TSU is worse.

I disagree, at least somewhat. The Citadel has been competitive, no doubt, but Georgia Southern had been stomping most everyone they played prior to the App loss. The close GSU/Citadel result shows that the App game may have been the beginning of a trend, rather than just one subpar performance.

If you take away the Wofford game, our whole season has been one of steady improvement. I was pretty sure our game with GSU was going to be close, even though the game was in Statesboro.

If we truly are improving at the rate I think we are, we will beat Samford this weekend by 2 scores. If not, then I'll stand corrected.

I also give us even odds to sneak up on the Gamecocks next week and keep it within 2 scores. Our defense is going to surprise them.
