The Pennsylvania State University vs. the Roman Catholic Church ?
Re: Best Rivalries [and why]
1. Bethune-Cookman vs. Florida A&M - Averages over 60,000 fans per contest; FCS's premiere football game.
2. Lafayette vs. Lehigh - Known simply as "The Rivalry" for a reason.
3. Harvard vs. Yale - Known simply as "The Game" for a reason.
4. Grambling State vs. Southern - Averages over 52,000 fans per contest - another elite game often featured on national television.
5. Montana vs. Montana State - Montana became a state in 1889. In 1893, the two universities were founded. They began playing football against each other in 1897 and have hardly spoken a civil word since.
Honorable Mention.
Alabama State vs. Tuskegee. Not eligible because Tuskegee is a Division II school. Nonetheless, this contest, played each Thanksgiving Day since 1901, is the oldest rivalry among HBCUs in the United States.

I would add that The Brawl is by far the biggest sporting event of the year in MT. Only other state that can claim that is NoDak, and they don't play that game no mo.

Nice mixture a prue hate and respect between the programs.
I'd throw in Furman too since they're officially back from the dead.

That's where you are wrong. Now is exactly the time that you can see how much of a rivalry that it is. Despite not playing for several years now, the hate still pours out. The rivalry is still as strong as ever.Grizalltheway wrote:Umm, they don't even play it anymore, and the longer they go without playing, the more luster it loses.DSUrocks07 wrote:UND-NDSU hands down...that one is in a whole 'nother stratosphere.![]()

Point taken, but at what point does it become a formerly great rivalry that people just reminisce about?DJH wrote:That's where you are wrong. UM vs MSU #1 rivalry.
If UM played App St on a regular basis that would be one hell of a rivalry.

Re: Best Rivalries [and why]
IMO...the annual game between the two teams that account for...
12 of the last 13 SoCon championships
5 of the last 12 national championships
4 of the last 12 WP award trophies
at least one spot in 10 of last 13 semifinals
probably more playoff wins in the last 15 years than most autobid conferences
The age of the rivalry is overrated.

DJH. shut the hell up, you might of run into 2-3 drunk idiots, but
UNI-NDSU is bigger and better and more hatred than anything in the PAST D2 years for NDSU.
#2 v #3 in country and every game influences the conference winner basically, and there was straight up hate between the players, fans & coaches that day. it was AWESOME!!

Re: Best Rivalries [and why]
Good list. I realize it's a big draw, but I'm not sure B-CU/FAMU can be called I-AA's "premier football game". I think your list looks better flipped and throw in NDSU/SDSU.hardtimes wrote:1. Bethune-Cookman vs. Florida A&M - Averages over 60,000 fans per contest; FCS's premiere football game.

Actually the more I think about it, the TU-ODU is really only a rivalry on the ODU side, as they have never beaten us.

Townson/Morgan is one of the premier rivalries in the nation. They almost cracked the 10k mark this year.

Re: Best Rivalries [and why]
Actually its only football they haven't played. UND played NDSU in men's basketball last year in the Fargodome, 10,709 (NDSU record)people for the first Sioux-Bison game since early 2004. This year UND hosted NDSU in volleyball..another attendance record (2394). This season Jan. 17th... NDSU at UND for men's basketball at the Ralph Engelstad Arena which hosted Kansas in 2001 had a state record for attendance (13,280), should expect about 13,000 for this one! The rivalry is dead in football but alive in other sports.Grizalltheway wrote:Umm, they don't even play it anymore, and the longer they go without playing, the more luster it loses.DSUrocks07 wrote:UND-NDSU hands down...that one is in a whole 'nother stratosphere.![]()
