nope.

1. We have elections too frequently for the pressure to build up to an unstable point.
2. Despite how bad it is for so many people - the VAST majority still support our system (MANY would like to see some changes... but nothing like revolution)
3. We still are nowhere near as tenuous or dangerous as things were in the 30's... not even close, not even a little.

As for these protests "turning violent"... meh. Isolated incidents here and there to this point... considering the size and scope of the movement - it's been pretty tame thusfar. What I HAVE noticed changing as a result of these protests are the number of articles that reference the dramatic rise in the equity gap between the wealthiest and everyone else. In that regard - mission accomplished.

This movement will flame out - because it is, in essence, the Tea Party left. These movements tend to become dominated by their extremes... so it will likely be with this one. The more moderate, and salient, points will be co-opted by politicians, and we'll move on. Sunrise. Sunset.
Thank you David Broder. ;)

Actually I agree that we're probably not that close to a serious change. There's too much entrenched power and the middle to upper middle class really hasn't suffered all that much. Sure people are stressed, have to work longer hours, cut back on unnecessary spending and luxury items, but I think it would have to get much worse in order for either movement to turn into a true revolutionary thing.

Hey 89, I forgive you for missing all of those times I've criticized the Obama administration and Dem's for the role in perpetuating monopoly capitalism. Or every time I pointed out that Graham-Leach-Bliley and the CFTA were signed by a Democratic president, or that everyone shares the blame including F&F and congressional Dems. I can quote other journalists and economists that share Matt Taibbi's opinions, I just happen to like his writing style. But I noticed that you choose to not argue the points, you're just bothered that it comes from Rolling Stone. :kisswink:

And the real funny part with Kalm is that all along most of the Reps on this board have agreed that there is plenty of blame to go around, but he espouses the stuff from Rolling Stone that pins it 100% on Wall Street and the banks and then turns around and accuses of Reps pinning one one side.
Here, read these two pieces about Michael Bloomberg's take on OWS and who should be blamed for the financial crisis. Obama's cozy with Wall Sreet, F&F were a problem, and people were enabled to get loans who shoudnt have been. But from an ethical level, this pales in comparison to billion dollar fraudulent activities perpetrated by a few of the financial elites. And it ain't even close. I would stop calling out conk politicians on this if they could avoid looking stupid, or ignorant, or corrupt or both. :coffee:

Do you two really believe this?

There's one principal reason we're not experiencing more violent protest: Electronic surveillance.

During the 30's, the FBI really didn't invest time looking for insurgents or anti-American organizations: Most organized violence was labor related and STILL being suppressed by private security/local L.E.

To suggest that "middle income" Americans haven't been SEVERELY impacted by this depression is remarkably delusional.

If you want to put a positive spin on this depression, focus on the long-term.

Just as our grandparents and parents who lived through the 30's depression became notable for their work ethic and financial prudence, this depression will cultivate like ethics.

If you're young and looking for a career path, think "self-sufficiency". It's the "plastic" of the 21st century.

A personal note: If you're young and dating someone who spends more time at Nordstroms, Macys, Kohls, Red Lobster, Starbucks, GAP, or watching "E" or "O" TV...

...than they do in the kitchen, yard, garage/shop...

RUN AWAY!!!

Better yet, wait 'til they're not looking, pack up all your belongings at their place, write a note saying you've fallen in love with someone else, and leave. Immediately.

It's the visionary thing to do.

What a bunch of whiny little punks! If they hate us so much, the 1%, why don't the stop using everything we have provided them through our hard work and entreprenurship. Stop using the safe, constant flow of electricity, the pure water. Stop using the internet, the media, facebook, twitter, message boards and newspapers. Go naked.

Like I said...whiny little bpunks. It's not MY fault that I hustled to get where I'm at.

Satire is satire...but it has to have some element of truth to it to be effective.
