BTW, I drink. A lot. So the pledge thing would probably affect me too. But I still support the school's right to make whatever rules it wants for the people it hires. If it wanted to say, "We won't hire people who need vision correction" I'd support that too even though I have vision correction. They should have the right to employ or not employ anybody they want to employ or not employ for whatever reason.

Yep, ASU has that policy. But do students at those private schools, who discriminate on gender, receive any federally subsidized student aid?TwinTownBisonFan wrote:They aren't STATE institutions.CitadelGrad wrote:
What about private all-female colleges that have students who receive federally subsidized student aid? Do you think Wellesley is in compliance with the law? If so, why were VMI and The Citadel forced to admit women?
The difference between el Cid and Wellesley or VMI and Wabash (all male school in Indiana) is that both Wellesley and Wabash are PRIVATE schools.
Those private schools do not discriminate under the law. They are private schools that are expressly single-gender.
It's two different laws at play here.

And liberty in this instance = thought police which you're against. So you support the school's right to do it but personally disagree with it like everyone else. Right?JohnStOnge wrote:An example of why private colleges and universities should eschew any Federal fundiing. They get to keep their Liberty. At least I hope they do.

However, since state funding for El Cid has dropped to about 20% of total operating costs, I'd say the school is just aboyt state-supported in name only. Maybe when they cut us off entirely (in favor of clempson, sc state and that diploma mill in myrtle beach) we can revisit the issue.

Re: Shorter College bans gay employees:
Yes, and here's why: Private universities (as I understand the law) that had, before the passage of the law, not been co-ed were grandfathered in as exempt from the gender equity provision. (Both male and female... again Wabash and Wellesley both fit in to this) State run institutions were not exempted - as being government run, the government had much more say in their affairs. I can't say for sure, but looking at how this law has been handled, it would appear from the outside like the intent was to stave off lawsuits from the private schools... which makes sense.Cluck U wrote:But do students at those private schools, who discriminate on gender, receive any federally subsidized student aid?TwinTownBisonFan wrote:

Private schools aren't the only ones with "out there" teachings....

SuperHornet's Athletics Hall of Fame includes Jacksonville State kicker Ashley Martin, the first girl to score in a Division I football game. She kicked 3 PATs in a 2001 game for J-State.

Yes. You're not going to see me shrink from answering such a question. And if they didn't want to hire black people you're okay with that too?
This country is supposed to be about liberty. Unfortunately the People of the country seem to have lost sight of that.
When you hire somebody you should be able to hire who you want for any reason you want. When you opt NOT to hire somebody you should be able to opt NOT to hire them for any reason you want.
It is not...or should not be...the role of government to play "Daddy" and make you be nice to people.
You should have the right to decline to associate with anybody you wish to decline to associate with for whatever reason you have. Engaging in commerce should be a completely free and voluntary activity.
