PETA lawsuit seeks to expand animal rights

SAN DIEGO (AP) — A federal court is being asked to grant constitutional rights to five killer whales who perform at marine parks — an unprecedented and perhaps quixotic legal action that is nonetheless likely to stoke an ongoing, intense debate at America's law schools over expansion of animal rights.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals is accusing the SeaWorld parks of keeping five star-performer whales in conditions that violate the 13th Amendment ban on slavery. SeaWorld depicted the suit as baseless.

Why are some animals ok to eat (cow, lamb, pig) but other animals we wouldn't (dog, cat)?

We think of them as companions. They are consumed in other areas of the world because those people grew up doing it and so see no issue with the idea.

I have said for decades...literally...that a line should have been drawn in the sand long ago. That line should say, "Animals have no rights."

Animals, whether they are dogs or cats or horses or pigs or chickens or whatever, should be viewed as property. Unless of course they are wild. But wild animals shouldn't be viewed as having rights either.

Only human beings should be viewed as having rights. As soon as somebody decided that we should say animals have rights we started down a slippery slope. And we have also gotten pretty darned ridiculous.

Like worrying about whether or not people make their chickens fight each other. Please. I was watching something on that the other night. BIG deal because someone was....GASP...having cockfights. Yet we eat tens of milliions of chickens every day. So, like, it's better to be bred to be eaten than to be bred to fight?

Something is wrong with that picture.

PETA is batshit crazy and takes it too far.

Having said that, JSO... what are the traits ascribed to humans that you believe separate us from the rest of animals?

I think we shouldn't harm something because it isn't human. Animals have feelings. They mourn thier dead. They feel pain, happiness, sadness, anxiety. I'm not a fan of PETA, but you are just wrong. THen again, you think incest is acceptable. Why should YOU have rights? What makes you different from an animal? You are animal. You talk(like some animals) you walk upright, you use tools, you mourn, you laugh, you chose a mate, etc... What makes us so fucking different(other than our intelligence level). I tell you right now, my dogs and cat are smarter than many people I've come across. I treat my pets better than many people treat thier children or other humans for that fact.

So I ask you, what makes you so fucking special?

Having said that, JSO... what are the traits ascribed to humans that you believe separate us from the rest of animals?
It's not really about traits that separate us per se. Sure, we are by far the most intelligent species and we can obviously do things no other species can do. But it's practicality and self interest.

When you open the door to the idea that other species have rights you are opening a very dangerous door. We eat other animals. We use them in various ways. And there is no reason, self interest wise, to establish rules about how people treat or use their animals.

If you want to be nice to your dog, for instance, I applaud you. That's great. I'm nice to my dogs.

But how does it affect you for someone else to be mean to THEIR dog? It doesn't.

And the stuff about animal cruelty "causing" violence against other humans is not established. There's no real evidence of that. Associations? Maybe. But the associations can be potentially explained by the hypothesis that people who are mean to animals also have character traits that lead to them being violent towards other humans. Stopping them from being mean to animals, in that case, won't mean they will be less likely to commit violence against other humans.

How people have treated thier pets does affect me. I have 6 animals in my house. 3 are mine, 3 are fosters. The fosters have been shot, beaten, starved, are inbred to the point of medical problems. I've rescued many dogs from thier shitty owners and will continue to do so. So, it does affect me. Again, you're wrong. I understand this is your point of view, but you are like so many others. You have your belief and are so stubborn you won't consider anything that might change that belief.

Now, I don't know about the correlation between animal violence and human violence. BUt i would venture to guess that many serial killers and sick fucks that are locked up, killed and/or tortured animals in thier youths.

I cite the NY Times because they are pretty legit and responsible in thier reporting.

http://www.nytimes.com/2010/06/13/magaz ... wanted=all" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

In his famous series of 1751 engravings, “The Four Stages of Cruelty,” William Hogarth traced the life path of the fictional Tom Nero: Stage 1 depicts Tom as a boy, torturing a dog; Stage 4 shows Tom’s body, fresh from the gallows where he was hanged for murder, being dissected in an anatomical theater. And animal cruelty has long been recognized as a signature pathology of the most serious violent offenders. As a boy, Jeffrey Dahmer impaled the heads of cats and dogs on sticks; Theodore Bundy, implicated in the murders of some three dozen people, told of watching his grandfather torture animals; David Berkowitz, the “Son of Sam,” poisoned his mother’s parakeet.

The link between animal abuse and interpersonal violence is becoming so well established that many U.S. communities now cross-train social-service and animal-control agencies in how to recognize signs of animal abuse as possible indicators of other abusive behaviors. In Illinois and several other states, new laws mandate that veterinarians notify the police if their suspicions are aroused by the condition of the animals they treat. The state of California recently added Humane Society and animal-control officers to the list of professionals bound by law to report suspected child abuse and is now considering a bill in the State Legislature that would list animal abusers on the same type of online registry as sex offenders and arsonists.

IF a boy kills and tortures animals, it's only time before he's a man who will do the same to humans.

Are you serious? Is that what you are going for? Intelligence is subjective. I will give you this, no animals have not invented a car or the phone.

HOwever, crows do create tools in order to obtain food.

http://www.livescience.com/9761-10-animals-tools.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Increasingly, scientists find that crows and their relatives have exceptional birdbrains, proving extraordinarily adept at crafting twigs, leaves and even their own feathers into tools. Researchers have even discovered that crows might learn to drop stones in pitchers to raise the height of water inside, just like in Aesop's fable.
Written language? Dude, there were HUMAN CIVILIZATIONS that didn't have a written language. Does that mean they shouldn't have been afforded rights?
Elephants are among the most intelligent animals in the world, with brains larger than those of any other land animal. Anecdotes suggest they can intentionally drop logs or rocks on electric fences to short them out and plug up water holes with balls of chewed bark to keep other animals from drinking them away. Asian elephants are even known to systematically modify branches to swat at flies, breaking them down to ideal lengths for attacking the insects
THey practice hygiene, the invent thier own floss
Macaques living near a Buddhist shrine in Lopburi, Thailand, are known to pull out hair from visitors to use as floss to clean their mouths. Females even slow down and exaggerate their motions when they notice their young watching them jerking hair back and forth between their teeth, suggesting education is a very ancient trait in the primate lineage.
http://www.scientificamerican.com/artic ... y-to-count" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Recent studies, however, have uncovered new instances of a counting skill in different species, suggesting that mathematical abilities could be more fundamental in biology than previously thought. Under certain conditions, monkeys could sometimes outperform college students.
HOw about this? Animals have invented ways to heal themselves using nature. They know what plants to eat to ease stomach pain,etc...They've been doing that for centuries. When did we figure out that malaria comes from the mosquito?

That's a pretty significant "other than." Look around you. Look at the environment you're in right now. If you're reading this you're using some kind of computer. You're in a building of some sort. Probably climate controlled. I could go on but you get the point.

Our species is distinctly different. There is no real comparison.

I'm not going to look that up because it isn't necessary. When did any other species even figure out that some disease is caused by a parasite or some other pathogen? Ever.

When did you learn to pull your dick in before you zip your pants? Expierence? Animals use expierence to know that I am sick and eating these leaves will ease the pain. Humans and wild animals are different, obviously. But, that does not mean that they deserve respect and dignity in life. Do you kick your dog? Starve it? Refuse to give it heartworm prevention or it's rabies shots? If you take care of your dog, YOU ARE GIVING IT RIGHTS! IF you aren't a good owner. If you deny basic necessities to your animals, then you are a shitty human.

Of course we're different. That doesn't mean that we are any more IMPORTANT or deserving of respect. There are humans that contribute nothing to society, not even tax revenue. Should we take away thier rights because they aren't inventing super computers or modern medicine?

So, what gives you the right to deny freedom from abuse to animals? Who gave you this authority?

So your arguement, on a base level, is that since monkeys, birds, cockroaches, etc... have not contributed anything of value to the world such as the computer, telephone, Lipitor, etc.. they are beneath us in a way that mistreating them is ok.

So because they haven't given us the technology and or the McRib, we can inflict pain on them (which is the main goal of Animal Rights, ceasing Animal Abuse by companies and other organizations)
