John Brunner wrote a very prescient book on this subject in the mid-sixties called Stand on Zanzibar based on the population growth curve at the time and a famous psychological experiment about the behavior of rats as their environment became increasingly crowded.

I think Carl Sagan referenced that study in "Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors". It mirrored the increased crime rate in large cities.

That's the world the catholics and muslims want. Overpopulated and suffering.
"Sarah Palin absolutely blew AWAY the audience tonight. If there was any doubt as to whether she was savvy enough, tough enough or smart enough to carry the mantle of Vice President, she put those fears to rest tonight. She took on Barack Obama DIRECTLY on every issue and exposed... She did it with warmth and humor, and came across as the every-person....it's becoming mroe and more clear that she was a genius pick for McCain."

Predictable. And you can't blame the Catholic Church for this milestone.

Space exploration :thumb:

If the US had its shit together, and could f****** FOCUS for more than 5 seconds 40 years ago. We would have colonies on the moon by now and "overpopulation" wouldn't be an issue.

You realize the moon is way smaller than the earth, right? Maybe we could move Rhode Island and Delaware up there.

You realize the moon is the largest planetary satellite in the solar system. A little below 1/3 the size of the Earth?

It's true, I took 8 credits of astronomy. I completely was into the classes. I recommended the class to my friends who failed miserably. Dumbasses.

The Moon would just have been the starting point :thumb: and with natural gravity being 1/6th of Earth. Launching shuttles, rockets, mass drivers, from there would be a HELL of a lot cheaper. "Luna" could of been the core of our space program. A relay point for travel to Mars and elsewhere. We could have a generation of Lunar babies by now. And we would get a shit ton more research out of just that alone than the entire ISS project.

Dude, you wasted your money on those classes, especially since our own moon is not the largest natural satellite. It isn't even the second or the third largest.

It is the 5th largest, behind Ganymede, Titan, Callisto and Io.

Ganymede is significantly larger than our own moon, and it is also larger than Mercury and Pluto.

You're right. But it is the largest relative to it's own planet. I think. It's been 20 years.

Not at all. Well maybe he has. But he is correct, leaving from the moon would require far less fuel than leaving from Earth.

I'm just saying, this whole idea of colonizing the moon is much more complicated than he's making it out to be.

I'm just saying that priority-wise, we would be 40 years closer to accomplishing that instead of having it put on the back burner in favor for an ISS program which possibly has maybe 15 years left in its life cycle before it goes the way of Skylab.

My thing is people are focused more about population control as the answer compared to other potential options. The old saying about there's only so many pieces of the pie to go around, rationing seems to be the obvious option...but if you INCREASE the size of the pie... :ugeek:

And co-sign on the new sig :thumb: :thumb:

Well, if we did colonize the Moon and/or Mars, most of the resources used there would have to be shipped up from earth. As far as a mass migration to another planet after we destroy this one...the nearest earth-like planet has to be at least thousands, if not millions of light years away. Which means, even if we could devise a way of traveling at close to light speed, it would take far longer than a human life-span just to get there. Better to focus on slowing population growth and sustainable existence.

/nerdy rant. :ugeek:

The ten countries with the largest population in world are: China, India, United States, Indonesia, Brazil, Pakistan,
Bangladesh, Nigeria, Russia and Japan.

According to the CIA, Brazil, Mexico, Philippines, United States and Italy have the largest Catholic Populations. Pakistan, is #21 on the list for Muslim Populations (96.3%).

Maybe we shouldn't be fucking as much. Maybe we should instill some value in life(that includes in those that can't provide for themselves, having the smarts to not bring children into it).

Just a thought.
