Get off of your damned high horse. Maine, in the week following the supposed ODU/WM bloodbath, had more personal fouls against WM than ODU did.LeadBolt wrote:In 32 years this was the only game Laycocke ever complained about the dirty play in his post game interview. It appears that Coach Wilder has addressed his teams behavior, but the W&M players remember the cheap shots and it won't take much of that type of behavior again from ODU to make the situation deteriorate. I feel W&M will have a hard time not retaliating this year after not doing so last year.
Sure hope the situation does not deteriorate, as well. Would hate for your students to throw their pocket pen protectors at us; or even worse, have your dude that was elected homecoming queen throw dirty looks our way.
Laycock's reputation in many of our eyes went way down after his douchy comments following that game. Maybe if he spent as much time designing an offense as he did whining about ODU, he would not be in jeopardy of missing the playoffs this year despite being preseason top-5 ranked.

The differences in the Maine game, vs. the ODU game were:
1). Most if not all of the personal fouls were called in the Maine game, not ignored as at ODU.
2). Maine's PF's were straight up as a part of play, not sneaky after the fact.
3). The Maine players did not yell and signal obscenities to the crowd, opposing players and coaches.
As for your opinion of Laycocke being lowered by his comments, unfortunately our opinion of ODU was confirmed, not lowered by ODU's actions.
Our opinion of Wilder was raised by his how he addressed the with his players afterward and how they have played so far this year. Too bad he doesn't have that kind of influence on the ODU fans...

I do not know, I have only been following CAA football since late 2008. I know you are going to say exactly. One fan stated that MM doesn't suspend players, if he doesn't suspend players then what about Justin Thorpe, Chase Williams, the Rose brothers, Jonathan Williams, and so on? Justin Thorpe ad you know is/was a starting qb for JMU this season.bluehenbillk wrote:Please provide ONE link of the CAA ever suspending a football player. Re: Dirtiest FCS Rivalries?
I have had many discussions on this. I went over to the W&M section just before halftime to talk to a few people I knew. I did not see the fracas that occurred after the last play of the half, and TV did not show it, so I have no idea what happened. But I did see the actions of the ODU players gesturing to the W&M fans on the way to the locker room and I was embarrassed to say the least. Watching the replay of the game, there was at least one personal foul that was called incorrectly (Cameron's tackle of Callahan was called a facemask and it clearly wasn't), but there were other actions that did not result in a flag that could have been called unsportsmanlike. I spoke to a couple of W&M players last spring about the game. They said that only Norfolk St was worse (their opinion based on their experiences). They said a few other things that made me realize that someone clearly addressed the W&M team because they said the exact same thing that the W&M AD told me. And that is that the 15 yards for each occurence is not the only "penalty". The reputation can kill a program when playing in the CAA. It''s not the "CAA way". Wilder spent several days trying to defend what happened on the field. It wasn't until the following Tuesday that he finally announced that he is instituting a personal foul punishment. I really don't think ODU players will start anything when we meet again, but I think that if provoked, they may not have the composure to let it roll off their backs. It will be interesting to see if W&M players bait them.LeadBolt wrote:In 32 years this was the only game Laycocke ever complained about the dirty play in his post game interview. Re: Re: Dirtiest FCS Rivalries?
Couldn't find one huh...that's because I don't think they ever have. In regards to those players you're mentioning - I'm assuming your relatively new to this board - they've been discussed ad nauseum. Yep, they've all been suspended & rightly so - but I wouldn't give MM too much/any credit for that. What is a HC supposed to do when players are arrested like the Rose brothers or fail multiple drug tests - like Thorpe, etc. That's a school thing, not a HC thing - see LSU this week for example, suspended 3 players, including 2 starters for drugs. Head coaches don't get much tenure for advocating those kinds of kids suit up...unless your name is Jim Tressel & we all saw how that worked out.jmufan wrote:I do not know, I have only been following CAA football since late 2008. Re: Dirtiest FCS Rivalries?
Suspensions are suspensions no matter who makes the suspensions. I think MM does it right, he gives players a chance, even if they mess up, he still gives them a chance. That's the way it should be. Unless the person did something so egregious, they shouldn't be thrown under the bus when they make a mistake. Sometimes players deserve suspensions in order to make them grow, and other times they deserve a chance for redemption. We are all human and we all make mistakes, including MM. I think we would all like to have forgiveness for wrongs we have done. Okay, done with this topic.

Re: Dirtiest FCS Rivalries?
I'm not going to comment on what MM should or shouldn't do, but I wanted to say that the CAA is in a much different position than FBS conferences. If the CAA suspends a player, it could cost a player a redshirt year. With only 63 scholarships, rosters are thin, and the suspended player would need a replacement that might have to come from a kid who you would like to redshirt. The CAA is proposing the 5th year rule to the NCAA (which will not likely pass), so they are fully aware of the issue of redshirt players. Not saying that is the reason why the CAA doesn't get involved. I'm just saying that MAY be the reason.bluehenbillk wrote: Please provide ONE link of the CAA ever suspending a football player. Let's hope that by-gones are by-gones and that there is no hangover, baiting or other regrettable behavior spurred by last year on anyones part and just chalk it up to the high emotions of the first time meeting of old rivals on the grid iron.CAA Flagship wrote:I have had many discussions on this. We won't know that until Saturday is over, but given the composure of both teams since that game and the efforts of the coaches, let's hope it is an aberration and not the beginning of a trend.

NDSU is the only school that seems to have a problem with UNI. The fans and players of every other school in the conference has said that UNI is one of the most respectable programs in the conference.....
UNI isn't the team who has had players suspended for their actions on the field, like UNDS did.

I enjoy the classy racial slurs being tossed around by Delaware fans.
Back when a couple of their players invaded the home of another player with a shotgun to steal his steroids, Keeler should have drug tested every player on the team right away. It was pretty obvious that abuse of performance-enhancing drugs was perhaps widespread among Delaware players, but Keeler did nothing. Apparently Delaware fans feel that it's fine to turn a blind eye to steroid use, as long as it produces positive results on the field.

HARRISONBURG - Stephon Robertson loves playing football. His enthusiasm, apparently, is contagious.
"I feed off of him," James Madison junior linebacker Pat Williams, who plays alongside Robertson in the middle of the Dukes' defense, said Wednesday. "He motivates me. I feed off him and his energy."
Saturday, Williams will have to find another spark. And Robertson will have to spend the day without the game he loves.
JMU's freshman linebacker was suspended by the team for the season finale at Maine after being ejected from the Dukes' victory over William & Mary for throwing a punch at an opposing player.
During the week, JMU coach Mickey Matthews said a decision on Robertson's discipline would be up to the Colonial Athletic Association. But after consulting with the league's commissioner, Matthews announced he was suspending Robertson, who is tied with Williams for the team lead in tackles at 90.
It was unclear whether the CAA would have suspended Robertson if Matthews had not acted.
"His reaction was not good," Matthews said. "You can't do that. We cannot allow him or anyone else to act like that on the football field. We won't allow it."
Robertson was flagged for a personal foul on the play after swinging at William & Mary tailback Courtland Mariner as officials attempted to separate the two players. But JMU coaches were upset Mariner wasn't flagged for an offsetting penalty. Video from the game shows Mariner tugging forcefully on Robertson's facemask as the play concludes........

Re: Dirtiest FCS Rivalries?
Glad to see MM suspended a guy last season, after JMU was already eliminated from postseason play, after he was flagged and booted for the game before. Same thing happened per earlier in this or another thread regarding a UMass defender that missed this weeks UNH game for getting booted vs UD.
Still doesn't compute for me why the CAA doesn't do this. The Pac-12 just suspended double digit players for the UCLA -Arizona brawl, maybe that's what'd it take a bench clearing brawl for the CAA to step up.

As to what Keeler did, I wasn't aware drug testing policies were public for any team. How do you know who is and isn't tested at any school? Seems like you're guessing here.

Rufie, it'll probably pain you to learn that UD did indeed test every active player after the 2006 incident you mentioned, in addition to being subjected to as many as six random tests per season with a group of as many as 20 players at a time, along with the NCAA testing for playoff events. The idiots who committed crimes were tossed off the football team immediately and thrown out of school.rufus wrote:Back when a couple of their players invaded the home of another player with a shotgun to steal his steroids, Keeler should have drug tested every player on the team right away. Wow. Did we really not get enough of this last week? I understand that UD fans have nothing to look forward to until I-A QBs start declaring their intent to transfer, but JMU fans ought to know better (scratch that: have more on their mind)...I think...
