Dirtiest FCS Rivalries?
Dirtiest FCS Rivalries?
In the wake of the Southern/UAPB fight, I am wondering what would be considered the dirtiest rivalries in FCS football--the most personal fouls, roughing the passer calls, the dirty plays that weren't caught, late hits, etc...

Its not a rivalry, but the last few years of Weber/Montana have been pretty nasty on both sides

I seriously hated Liberty. Dirtiest MF'ers on the planet and then passed out jesus pamplets instead of shaking hands.
I understand they don't do this anymore, but still.
I remember my sophomore year, they had their pregame meal in the pressbox watching us have our Friday practice.

I'd say that the CAA is relatively "respectful" of one another ... but I think JMU/UR and Delaware/JMU always get the most "hostile" ... but I doubt a fight would ever erupt ala UAPB

I will be interested to see if there is any spillover from last year's ODU/W&M game where there were a few skirmishes and exchange of words from the coaches in their press conferences.

Re: Dirtiest FCS Rivalries?
The Idaho State vs. Weber State rivalry has been somewhat testy in the past. Even now the games between the two schools have fans, players, and coaches digging at each other. Even though Weber has thoroughly dominated its rival for the past 20 years. The Bengals always hope. Gotta give them that.
I do know that Montana State's crowd attacked Weber's players in the 1966 game. Yes, that was a long time ago, Weber and State fans are fairly cordial now, but I guess it was a different story 40 + years ago. Rivalries tend to change.

Speaking of DJ Bryant, kudos to UMass this week. UMass had a DL ejected from the Delaware game last week for drawing a personal foul when he kicked a UD player. UMass has suspended the player from this week's Colonial Clash vs UNH as well for his actions.GannonFan wrote:Which ones does DJ Bryant play in?
Meanwhile, I'm assuming Bryant played against lowly 'Nova last week after throwing punches at 2 Maine players. People wonder why they refer to them as Mickey's Monkeys or the Dirty Dukes....

Not a FCS rival but one of the dirtest in one of our hockey rivals was with Wisconsin. Where you have the police breaking up the fight.

Just wait for the ODU noobs to be introduced to the streamer crowd.

Re: Dirtiest FCS Rivalries?
They may have a more "complete" looking stadium ... but there is no feeling quite as breathtaking as walking through the stands on the visitors (student section) side and having a massive, steep 13 story packed stands screaming down on you. As much as people crap on the disproportionality of JMU's new stadium, I love it. The students get the crappy old side that has character and tradition, and you get to stare up at the monstrosity on the other side.andy7171 wrote:This.JmuSkinsfan wrote:

UMass seems to bring out the worst in many that they play.......especially UNH, Maine and URI (and maybe Delaware?)

Re: Dirtiest FCS Rivalries?
UMass was dirty and then some back under Whipple and Brown - almost like it was taught. They were never that way before Whipple came in and they have lessened considerably since Brown left. You don't see anywhere close to the chippy play and trash talking they did during the Whipple heydays. Even the guy who pulled a DJ Bryant and kicked and punched a guy, resulting in him being thrown out of the UD game, was just an anamoly for them lately.mainejeff wrote:UMass seems to bring out the worst in many that they play.......especially UNH, Maine and URI (and maybe Delaware?)
Odd enough, Maine has had years where they are just plaugued by personal fouls but I've never thought Maine was dirty - they were more dumb penalties than anything dirty.
In the CAA, it was really just UMass and DJ Bryant who would be clear dirty players.

Definite kudos. IIRC, that ejection occurred early in the second quarter, so he's missing 7 quarters of football. That was one big dude too.bluehenbillk wrote:Speaking of DJ Bryant, kudos to UMass this week. Hey, you throw a punch and you should do the time. Kudos to UMass for doing the right thing and not use the "well, it's an emotional game" and "he's really a great kid" or "he was provoked because someone hurt his feelings" defense. You wonder if Brown or Whipple would've done this but Morris is apparently a pretty standup kind of a coach. Good for him.93henfan wrote:Definite kudos. Hey look, another punch thrown by a non-JMU player again results in a suspension. Michigan St's William Gholston threw a punch in the game against Michigan and he's been suspended by the conference for the following game.

Good quote from the kid too:

Good quote from the kid too:
"I deeply regret momentarily losing my composure," Gholston said in his statement. " ... Coach [Mark] Dantonio regularly reminds us that actions have consequences, and I will be better prepared to handle these circumstances in the future. I look forward to my reinstatement."

Southern/Jackson St. When the visiting coach makes statements about the safety of his players/fans, that speaks to the dirtiness of a rivalry. There's bad blood on the field and in the stands.

Re: Dirtiest FCS Rivalries?
that rivalry is far from dirty. We don't like each other but other than one incident in 2000 the games are pretty clean.dal4018 wrote:How about instate rivals Grambling v Southern they aren't the best of friends around the holidays in the Bayou Classicjmufan wrote:In the wake of the Southern/UAPB fight, I am wondering what would be considered the dirtiest rivalries in FCS football--the most personal fouls, roughing the passer calls, the dirty plays that weren't caught, late hits, etc...
