The only reason I like our chances is our run D is pretty solid. I think we should win this by about 3-7, always close down there.

I'll be wearing the NAU sweatshirt that I bought to keep me warm at the GC last weekend! :) the guy who sold it to me said that NAU students cared more about ice hockey than football!

The Griz have owned Souers ever since he was hired at NAU all the way back in 1998. Souers has had his share of successes with the Lumberjacks, to be sure. But for whatever reason, Montana has served as Souers' personal svengali.

Including last year's contest in Missoula -- where Griz wideout C.J. Atkins pinned a 1-yard touchdown catch from Justin Roper against his helmet for a 24-21 victory -- Souers is 0-13 all-time against Montana.
Off topic, but this got me thinking about the other BSC teams' records against the Griz during the same stretch:

Opponents' Record vs. Griz during Jerome Souers Era (From 1998-Present)
1.)....MSU = 4-9 (.308)
T2.)..EWU = 3-11 (.214)
T2.)..WSU = 3-11 (.214)
4.)....PSU = 2-12 (.143)
T5.)..CSSU = 1-13 (.071)
T5.)..ISU = 1-13 (.071)
7.)....UNC = 0-8 (.000)
8.)....NAU = 0-13 (.000)

Opponents' Record vs. Griz during Washington-Grizzly Era (From 1986-Present)
1.)....EWU = 7-19 (.269)
2.)....PSU = 4-16 (.200)
T3.)..MSU = 4-21 (.160)
T3.)..WSU = 4-21 (.160)
5.)....NAU = 3-22 (.120)
6.)....ISU = 2-25 (.074)
7.)....CSSU = 1-16 (.059)
8.)....UNC = 0-8 (.000)

So it's not just Souers that has been struggling against UM. BTW, the mighty CAA has a losing record against the Griz during the Wa-Griz Era, as well (6-8 = 0.429). But hey, streaks are eventually broken. Sac State broke through with their first win against UM this year and NAU has a great chance to, as well.

 Actually, a lot of streaks seem to be getting broken in the last year or so for some reason.......... :ohno:

PSU = 38 yards rushing in the 2nd half. Good luck with that. :coffee:

Yes, please run at us. Your chances of winning are pretty much dependent on A) how many 3 and outs we have, B) how many kicks we allow to be blocked or run back, and C) how many times Nguyen fumbles. I say we take this game 7 out of 10 times on the road, 9 of 10 at Wa-Griz

The Griz D-Line should dominate, so Montana will win without too much trouble as long as the offense or special teams doesn't give NAU a bunch of easy opportunities.

I think were going to have to be a little more creative then just run the ball to stay with Montana. We were held to something like 57 total rush yrds against MSU. That’s not going to cut it against the griz who did a good job against Portland St’s rushing attack thats been giving everybody fits. Were going to have to get our athletes(Umodou/Paden) in space with some screens and high percentage pass plays, which will hopefully stretch the field and open some running lanes for Bauman and Dixon.

MSU has been the only game this season that the competition was league's above and beyond NAU's level (I'm not counting an FCS school, U of Arizona). NAU's losses to PSU and EWU could have easily gone the other way minus the excess turnovers and excess penalties. Don't get me wrong...PSU and EWU are both good but NAU shot itself in the foot in both of those games. MSU was the first game I've watched that where the Jacks were clearly outclassed athletically.

Limit the turnovers and limit the untimely penalties (two occasions in which points were taken off the board vs. EWU) and NAU has a shot vs. the U of M. The Griz "D" is tough. Their offense has talent but doesn't seem to be clicking on all cylinders on offense. If I'm correct, their special teams haven't been all that 'special' this year? They are far from being infallible.

Will it happen...that 0 for the last 13 is a mental hurdle to overcome. Maybe more so for the coaching staff than the players? ....I don't know. I felt that NAU was a more talented team the last two seasons than they are this season. Lots of youth in the trenches and on defense this season. We'll see on Saturday.

Once again, go Jacks!

CatBlitz22 - Never underestimate the abilities of a bunch of smart asses with keyboards. I would like to take the opportunity to especially thank AshevilleApp, DSURocks07, SeattleGriz and GrizFanStuckInUtah for making this dream of an NAU-related thread reaching two pages a reality. Your efforts are appreciated by NAU fans...all five or six of us.

Thanks for sporting the NAU gear back east, Ivytalk. Heard a kid at one of the schools where I live is looking into Ivy League schools. I'll do some research and see what college in particular.

NAU club hockey games were fun Friday/Saturday night entertainment when I was up there. I'm pretty sure that Jay Lively Ice Rink is back and running after it collapsed due to an obscene snowstorm 1-2 winters ago.

But I will call B.S. on the guy at the Grand Canyon who sold you the NAU sweatshirt. Hockey's a club sport and receives less significantly less thought/support than football.

hahaha hockey games are fun, but football does have more support. Even with only 9000 seats we still have not had a sellout, I am hoping this might be the game.

Montana's special teams have been pretty good all around. Sambrano has 2 return TDs, though he may not play after dinging his ankle last week (& if he does, he may not do returns). I personally think Nguyen is a more talented return guy than Sambrano, but he's had trouble with muffs. McKnight struggled early on field goals, but is 7/9 in the last 2 games (5/7 40+); he's perfect on PATs. McKnight is also punting again, but you may see Wren in a coffin-corner situation; Montana's net punting stats are pretty good. The kick coverage has been inconsistent—against NoCo they pinned UNC inside the 20 three times, then gave up a TD on the fourth. They've had McKnight do more short, angle kicks lately.

Also, for those that care, the Griz ditched the Swinging Gate on PATs this year.
