Big South Power Rankings- Week 8

Post by bjtheflamesfan »

Since TTL hasnt really partaken in this the last few weeks I thought Id take a crack at it and get some discussion going:

1. Liberty (defeated Coastal Carolina 63-27)- The Flames pretty much cemented themselves as the team to beat with a dominating performance against the 20th ranked Chanticleers. Mike Brown threw for 218 yards and a pair of TDs and Aldreakis Allen had one of his best games of the season finishing with 96 yards. Liberty has not lost to a Big South Conference opponent at home since 2006. Up Next: @ Charleston Southern
2. Stony Brook (defeated St Anselm (D2) 55-6)- Stony Brook dominated their D2 opponent at home and Kyle Essington (taking over full time for injured starter Michael Coulter) threw for 275 yards. The story once again though...the running game. The Seawolves cruised up and down the field with the efficiency of the iconic submarine class, finishing with 404 yards, led by their two headed monster of Brock Jackolski (96 yards) and Miguel Maysonet (80 yards) as well as redshirt freshman Jevahn Cruz (169 Yards 2 TDs). If station holds, you will have two teams looking to make history when these two meet on Long Island the final week of the season. Up Next: @ VMI
3. Coastal Carolina (lost to Liberty 27-63)- The Chants took one on the chin in Lynchburg, allowing the most points to an FCS team (and second most overall) in school history. Major bright spot though was again the QB Aramis Hillary. The junior threw for 207 yards and three TDs and carried the offense for the most part (especially after Jeremy Height left with an injury following a fumble on the first offensive play for CCU) Up Next: vs. Gardner-Webb
4. VMI (defeated Charleston Southern 21-17)- The Keydets got off the schnide against the Bucs in Lexington but still are having trouble adjusting to a pro style offense as they have only scored more than 21 points 4 times (all last year). Eric Kordenbrock threw for 166 yards and a TD and Chaz Jones scored two TDs but VMI is going to have to find a way to score points because their next three opponents (Stony Brook, The Citadel in the Military Classic of the South and Liberty) will all be lighting up the scoreboard. Up Next: vs. Stony Brook
5. Presbyterian (defeated Gardner-Webb 28-14)- The Blue Hose got three TDs from Lance Byrd in their win and Justin Bethel showed why he is on the Buck Buchanan Award watch list with another blocked kick. They definitely have a HUGE game next up though Up Next: @ #1 Georgia Southern
6. Gardner-Webb (lost to Presbyterian 14-28)- The Runnin Bulldogs were run over by Lance Byrd and Presbyterian. First year head Coach Ron Dickerson has found the going tough, but Kenny Little has been a highlight in the backfield while Lucas Beatty continues to adjust to being the starter replacing Chandler Browning. Up Next: @ Coastal Carolina
7. Charleston Southern (lost to VMI 17-21) It is not a good time to be raising the Jolly Roger as the Bucs fell to 0-6 in what was a very important game. Charleston Southern has not won a game since Nov 13 last year and dating back to last year has lost 13 of 14. Liberty comes to town this week and after their last two wins, this could be another long afternoon for the blue and gold. Up Next: vs. Liberty

Like your assessment of things around the league. Last night was painfull to watch and I did cheer a few times for the Hawks. Our offense is really coming together under Essington who is a true roll out QB who can run when needed. We have 3 happy wide receivers right who are finally seeing the ball for a change. Looks like slug fest 3 coming up in November on Long Island.

As long as both teams hold station, itll be a historic day for either Stony Brook or Liberty that day my friend.
