No, but I don't think DD would describe himself as exclusively liberal or conservative. :twocents:

Agreed, DD is tough to argue with. But step outside who's protesting for a second.

Let's assume DD makes $500K a year. Do you think the guys on Wall Street who got $20 million bonuses are 40 times smarter, 40 times better educated, work 40 times as hard, are 40 times as deserving of their income as DD? Now factor in the public subsidizing of their bonuses.

Our generation will continue to sit on its hands and say OK that's how the world must work. :ohno:

Being a champion of productivity while remaining silent about government sponsored excess is quite the conundrum.

It does not matter if they are 40X anything that DD is. Some people just get lucky. I also don't think it should be government sponsored. I'll line up with ya shoulder to shoulder on that one. The people that are paying the absolute least into the kitty are bitching about the tab though and think they have some reason to dictate where the money is going.

However, the notion of what ought to be in the world of those who earn vs. those who don't earn as much just doesn't work for me.

We don't know for sure what their message is but as far as I can tell it's got a lot of similarities to what the tea party formed around and that was or has been seen as a whole lot of lunacy by liberals...and others.

Some people get lucky and some people steal. I think that line has been way too blurred for the past decade. DD also highlights his parents putting him and his siblings through school. That's gonna be much more difficult for our generation now. That might be good or bad, but it's probably a reality.

I hate it when you call my bluff, but you and I are not too far off on this one. And for the record, I actually think the Tea Party has some valid gripes as well. Sometimes it's not necessarily bad for the hoi poloi to rise up and simply say 'we're pissed'. :thumb:

Those that steal should be dealt with as the criminals they are. Those that achieve should not be viewed as criminal because they achieved though.

Everybody shouldn't be going to college. Some should seek trades, some should fill in at the Votech's, and community colleges are still sort of affordable aren't they? You should probably try and help the kids but college should surely be primarily on their shoulders, or at least equally on their shoulders. It would mean more to them.

Most of us are pretty similar in thought but just cling to different points in any argument.

Agree on the first point, but I don't see the protestors hanging people like Steve Jobs in effigy. And the lack of criminal prosecutions for financial crimes should itself be enough to take up the pitch forks.

I also totally agree on votech training. I've said for years that we should be separating the academics from the trades in our school system at an age young enough that all the kids who were never going to go to college anyway would be graduating high school with an internship in a trade so they're immediately employable at a decent starting wage. I think Finland does this. But also keep in mind that unemployment for college grads is still only 4% while construction trades have been hammered by the economy and manufacturing jobs continue to go over seas or suffer from wage deflation. Unskilled labor is also being effected by immigrants willing to work and live for less. Perhaps we're still coming to grip with the fact that the days of earning a living wage without a college degree might be numbered and that it's very difficult to put a kid through college on a middle class income or for that kid to work his way through school.

And yes, it's funny that some of the protests probably come from enough affluence that they could afford meaningless degrees and to protest for weeks instead of work.

As I've said before, kids are taught and have been taught for a while that if you get a college degree that the sky is the limit and that without a college degree you will eat pop tarts for dinner every night. I know I was. It's all a crock of s***. Start teaching high school students about the realities of the global economy and the job market instead of all this idealistic BS of telling them they can accomplish anything without extolling the virtues of perseverance and hard work. I'm sure many of them will shape up PDQ.

Obama is right on the money when he says America is getting soft and losing our competitive edge. The days when a good job would fall into your lap if you have a multicultural basketweaving degree are gone and probably won't be back in any of our lifetimes. The US has been resting on its laurels for too long, and now it's biting us in the ass. We're not going to f***ing be the best just because we're the US of f'n A.

Fareed Zakaria has a good editorial on this subject. In terms of innovation, we are getting our asses handed to us. We have more college students studying psychology than engineering FFS. Wake the **** up, America.

Sure the President said we are soft, but he didn't say what needs to be said because he didn't want to offend his voting block.

DD's example of how his family rose up through the ranks is a great one. But it took HARD WORK and SACRIFICE to get there...through GENERATIONS. There are few quick fixes to end a family's poverty, but no one wants to hear that. And on one wants to hear that they should save their money and not buy that large screen TV, smart phone (the one made overseas), or other non-essential items. Heck, if Obama told people to stop spending on frivolous items and start saving for a better future, economists would probably say that our economy would collapse even more.

Vicious cycle, but not really.

Oh, and the "we need more engineers" mantra is funny. Seriously, for what? Unless, or course, engineers are be willing to be a dime a dozen so that we can compete worldwide. 8-) Otherwise, we make something smart, such as solar equipment, and it takes China only a couple years to start dominating the market. We make wind turbines and China will take a large chunk of that market in less time then it will take an engineer to start and finish his degree.

"Western manufacturers worried about price competition need only look at solar panels. In three years, the Chinese went from 30 percent market share to more than half by improving quality and slashing prices, New Energy Finance data shows.

China’s share of the global turbine market more than doubled to 32 percent since 2008 and its manufacturers comprise seven of the world’s top 15 suppliers, according to BTM Consult ApS, a Denmark-based wind industry researcher."

http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2011-10-1 ... chest.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

It’s a tough world out there. Not everyone is going to win, or win big. But it seems as though some people don’t want to do the hard work associated with winning. Instead, they want to make a lot of noise and hope someone tosses them a bone.

Good luck to them…but don’t expect me to respect them or willingly support them.

True - but you're missing the core of the occupy movement - it's backlash against a system that "bailed out" Wall Street when it failed. When the "1%" had the issue - they went to the government and got a bail out as they came up with we're "too big to fail". Meanwhile, unemployment shoots up, wages stay stagnant, health care increases by double digits every year, home values crash & suddenly 99% of America sees their net worth drop by a decent amount. But we shouldn't worry about that? These people say we work hard too - where's the bail out for the other 99%?

Maybe these other movements to move $$ from Chase & BOA will grow & they'll be merged into somewhere else or maybe they will fail. The days of the Wall Street bailouts are over.
Perhaps they were in the bathroom when congress passed:

Bush stimulus package ($171 billion)
Cash for clunkers ($3 billion)
Home buyers tax break ($22 billion)
Obama stimulus package ($838 billion)
Extended unemployment ($56.4 billion)

The $700 billion used to bail out banks was ALL paid back and the government MADE $4 billion in interest in the process. How much of the above $1.034 TRILLION was paid back?

NONE. That's how much. Those fleabaggers are fucking morons. They ALL have failed Econ 101...
I would have liked to get a bail out of 1 million and see what I could have done with it for a year. Bet I could have made a nice tidy sum and returned the 1 million plus interest.

Not saying you are wrong in anyway, just thinking out loud.

Most of these dopes don't have a clue as to why they are actually there, they just hit a bad patch of ground, and instead of getting up and dusting themselves off, they wanna whine about it. Fuck that. The system isn't rigged that badly. It is what it always has been. I'm a perfect example. My great grandfather was a share cropper in SE Georgia. Never owned a damn thing. He sent his son to the upstate of South Carolina with what little he could save to find a job in the textile industry. He did, and worked his ass off, scrimped, saved, did without, and was able to send his son to college (with the help of the GI bill) to become an engineer. My dad worked as an engineer for 40 years and in the process was able to send me and my siblings to college and grad school. We all chose our careers wisely and have been successful, and have made sure that my parents never had to worry about a damn thing until they died this past June. I am the culmination of all of their hard work, sacrifice, and forthought. Do I feel sorry for some fucking Craft Studies major who can't find a job in her field, or some bozo who works at Best Buy because he pissed away his youth and didn't plan for the future? Hell no.

We have had one hell of a bad time the last few years. It's been coming a long time though, and anyone with half a brain could see that. I remember the day I knew it was gonna get ugly. I was driving down the highway past a local manufacturing facility. They were changing shifts, and almost to a man, every car that drove out of that lot was a high end luxury vehicle. I called my partner and told him we needed to start planning for the shit to hit the fan. We made adjustments in our business model and luckily it looks like we will weather this downturn. A lot of the shit these fuckers are protesting, they brought on themselves. Cry me a fucking river.

You want the world to be fair? What fairy tale do you live in?
Never has been never will be. Deal with it.
Holy Moly!
DD just got ripped off the rant of the century!
"Elaine, you're from Baltimore, right?"
