I don't think it's an indictment of UD as much as it is the overzealous security people. And props to Tressolini for calling out the administration on the noisemakers issue, too.
Trumpetman is just another episode in a general stewing of the pot of the UD fanbase for about three years now. People are getting to this phase now, including several politicians who happen to be season ticket holders:

What do UD fans think the solution is? I've read a few things on GoHens before, but I really don't pay a ton of attention unless it's JMU Week. All I know/recall is attendance is down and there was an uprising over increased fees.
The damage can never be fully undone. UD has lost nearly 4,000 season ticket holders (11K+ down to 7K+) in just three seasons.
The crux of the problem has been poor communication and rollout of the UDAF, along with no real vision for football-related facilities improvement and a bad economy. Call it a triple whammy.
I don't have the answers for a solution. There have been many proposals recently brought up on GoHens.
If there isn't a CAA or NCAA rule prohibiting noisemakers during the regular season, then why would UD security even take the guy's trumpet away? Why not just let him play during the regular season games as he has been reportedly for 15 years? Just seems dumb on UD's part.

Agreed. I've read so many articles on this so far that I forget exactly where the reasoning was published, but UD is now maintaining that they are abiding by NCAA postseason rules, and that they want to follow postseason rules all season so it's not a shock when they have to ban stuff that they allowed all regular season.
It's just another in a long line of bunglings in recent years.
The answer of course, is to drill your security and police forces to not sweat the small stuff and focus on safety issues, but that's obviously too difficult for this crew.

Can't believe how you UD fans are soft playing this story. Anyone at the game knows that W&M wins going away if not for trumpetman. Further investigation is in order!

No. Your team really was that bad. Now get fired up and peg some losses on the rest of the CAA!

Yea, right. You'd rather have me believe that the result had something to do with, say, the fact that our offense never got with in a mile of the red zone? Typical coverup.
Graham and Moody still out, so I'm not getting my hopes up, but wer'e going up against the worst D in the league. Maybe our defense will get the occasional breather. Should be fun.

3,000, 3,000 don't make it worse than it is 93. It went from 11K+ to the current day 8K.
Resistance is futile. We have rules to follow; lest the dominoes will fall and thousands of Chicken fans will be tooting their horns!
It seems to me that when things like this happen most admins find an 'exception clause' which allows an 'offender' to maintain the status quo but prevents those ugly dominoes from falling.
Maybe Trumpetman could be designated adjunct to the band, assistant mascot, cheerleader support, or whatever, to maintain the tradition within guidelines and rules.
The NCAA can be real douches on things like this -- if I recall correctly, they even had a rule against too much noise (subject to a delay of game penalty) back in the 1980s. Thank goodness they quickly dropped that BS!

We are under 8K, so that would be 7K+. If you are maintaining it's 7.5K+, then I'll allow you 3.5K as the net loss, but it's certainly well over 3K. Any way you slice it, 7K+ STH base is embarrassing for a program of our stature. We're going the wrong way and we need to get the bleeding stopped. If rallying around Trumpetman is the Rosa Parks moment, I'm good with that.
The sellout this weekend is going to be fun. It's been awhile.

Well to be technical I think a week before the season started it was 7,940 or 7,950 so figuring we could've sold a few more before the WCUPA annual beating I just go with 8K.
No wife & older kid this week - just me & the little man - feel free to stop over in the lot pre-game - 1:00ish arrival time

I'll be there with my dad. No kids this week, as their bitch mother is taking them to NC to see ex-inlaws. No, I'm not bitter.
I think we're doing ribeyes on Saturday. Hope it's not too windy to put up canopies and flags. Supposed to be a gale.

This just reminded me I need to respond to a divorce client. Thanks!

Deep breath.

Actually the one positive that has resulted in the year of some smaller crowds is the shifting demographics at UD games. There are fewer old people (maybe they died/aren't physically able anymore/or complain about new fees & fixed incomes) at games now & more and more families and younger people.
Maybe the athletic department can claim/think they're starting over with a new generation but the crowds definitely have skewed younger recently.

The crowd isn't getting younger. You are getting older.

The correct answer is 6,930.
I know this because when divided by 1,000 it equates to 6.93.
I apologize. Do you want any pics of EWU's lovely turf experiment on Saturday afternoon? I can snap a few and then forward them on to ya if it would make us friends again.
