Payton/Buchanan Watch Lists Updated

Four added to Walter Payton Award Watch List; three join Buck Buchanan Award Watch List

Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) – Excellent early season play has led to four players joining the 2011 Walter Payton Award Watch List and three others being added to Buck Buchanan Award, the two highest player awards in the Football Championship Subdivision. Both are presented by The Sports Network and sponsored by Fathead.com.

Joining the race for the 25th Walter Payton Award, which honors the outstanding player in the FCS, are Indiana State sophomore running back Shakir Bell, New Hampshire senior quarterback Kevin Decker, Lehigh senior quarterback Chris Lum and Idaho State junior wide receiver Rodrick Rumble. Joining the race for the Buck Buchanan Award, which is presented to the FCS’ outstanding defensive player, are Presbyterian senior cornerback Justin Bethel, Prairie View A&M senior defensive end Adrian Hamilton and Northern Iowa senior linebacker L.J. Fort.

Lum and Decker have led their teams into the national Top 10, with Lum ranking first in the FCS in touchdown passes (19) and total offense (371 ypg) and sixth in passing efficiency (160.31), and Decker fifth in passing efficiency (165.59) and eighth in total offense (310 ypg). They rank first and second in points responsible for per game (Lum, 23.6; Decker, 23.5).

Bell ranks second in rushing yards per game (153.4) and this past weekend was one yard shy of posting his third straight 200-yard game. Rumble has set the national pace in receptions per game (11) and receiving yards per game (151.4).

Among the defensive standouts, Bethel has scored three touchdowns – two off blocked kicks and one off an interception – while making plays all over the field. Hamilton is on a three-game run in which he’s been a part of 10 sacks (six solos and four assists for eight total), including four against Arkansas-Pine Bluff. Fort shares the FCS lead with four forced fumbles and has made at least a dozen tackles in each of second-ranked Northern Iowa’s first four games.

Could someone help me understand the criteria for these award lists? In particular I am curious about how many of the Payton candidates have fair to good stats at this point in the season and are still contenders while players from weaker conferences with better stats are left out. I'm sure there are factors such as conference ranking, strength of schedule etc. as well as direct team ranking and a bit of subjective interpretation?

If someone has a minute or two to post some insight or a link I would appreciate it.

Well here is a good analogy. I could go play middle school ball right now and dominate but put me at a nationally ranked high school and I might not even touch the field. Just because you are good at a lower league doesn't mean you deserve to be on the list. There are players who do but they have to be special. Also, it's early so it doesn't look good to take 10 guys off and then have to add some back on. A few players have been hurt or taken out early in games so their numbers are down. If a guy is not putting up good numbers by the next update I am sure you can expect that their name will be taken off.

It is not this kids fault that everyone in the State plays in the NFL. 9 tackles is pretty good if the runners only get 2 feet after getting to ball...

i think they should keep an eye on weber state's mike hoke or at least have him on the back burner.

Weber State
Hoke, rating 155.3, 1,165 yds, 12 TD, 0 INT
39 carries for 51 yds, 3 TD
record vs FCS: 2-1
weber is 2-3 overall with 2 FBS losses.

there are 11 QB's on the current list.

hoke compared to this group:
hoke has 3rd highest rating, only QB to play against 2 FBS, best TD to INT ratio in the country i would imagine. he is 7th in passing yds.

Those stats are definitely some great numbers through 5 games. The question is who has he played, who will he play and will his stats be that good when it's all said an done? If he keeps this pace up though then he should finish pretty darn high. Also, does Lehigh even run the ball? Those QB stats are insane although the 8 INTs make me think that they heave-ho quite often....ugh....Lehigh :(

Teams Hoke has played against so far
1. Wyoming
2. Utah State
3. #20 Sacramento State
4. Northern Colorado
5. Eastern Washington

Remaining
6. Idaho State
7. #22 Southern Utah
8. #16 Montana
9. #3 Montana State
10. NAU
11. Portland State

his passer rating and interceptions have been very impressive considering the competition he has played. I think he will keep it up.

Just wondering when does this list get updated?
Towson's RB Terrance West has just under a 1000 yards in just 8 games and 21 touchdowns. Averaging 6.7 yards per rush.
"Elaine, you're from Baltimore, right?"
"Yes, well, Towson actually."
