The Tea Party movement has had some PR problems since the almost-default of the summertime debt fight. TPM has reported on the increasingly negative view of the conservative movement Americans have taken, and on Tuesday there was more bad news: CNN/ORC polling, which has tracked the Tea Party’s popularity since January 2010, shows that a majority of Americans now views it unfavorably.
The poll shows that only 28 percent of Americans do view the Tea Party favorably, versus a full 53 percent who don’t. The poll shows that less than twenty percent don’t have an opinion of Tea Partiers, which is the lowest yet — an issue on polling the movement has been that many Americans simply didn’t know enough about it. That has clearly changed since the beginning of last year.

I'm sure the real Tea Party types (reduce spending, no tax increases) really don't care about the polls. While the Tea Party name is thoroughly discredited and ridiculed now, they have started to get what they wanted in the first place (reduce spending, no tax increases). The 2010 election was a ringing success from their standpoint and while Obama remains likely to win reelection, there's no denying that the course of his Preisdency and his ability to do things contrary to the Tea Party mantra (i.e. raise spending and increase taxes) isn't likely to happen. As political movements go, this one's been exceedingly successful, even while parts of it have been completely wrecked on the PR side of things.
I truly live in conk land, and the teabaggers are the village idiots here. Same kind that writes letters to the editor in small town newspapers if you get my drift. Nobody pays much attention other than providing a few laughs.

They could have gotten these things without getting the bad PR. It's not like they are asking for anything that most people don't already want. I think you could argue that are succeeding in spite of themselves and that if they have better leadership they could be doing even better.

Agree with AZ - there are just too many kooks making too much noise for the label "Tea party" not to suffer. But where the Dems have tried and failed in this is assuming that the bad press that comes from the kooks is enough to completely disregard the original kernel of a message of reduced spending and lower taxes. Assuming that the warts and all would mean they can ignore that movement cost them in 2010 and will plague them next year too - not everywhere and in every race, and probably not in the big Presidential one, but in enough places that we end up where we are today with that sentiment (reduced spending yada yada yada) in enough places of power to be a significant factor.

I just don't think the more broad goal (less spending) was enough of a movement to really gel into a populist position. This was never going to be a populist movement that was going to span decades like the progressive/socialist movement of 100 years ago. It was very singular in its focus and hence doesn't have a long shelf life if they get what they want. All the kooky fringe stuff is just hanger ons who are looking for a pedestal to be kooky on.
