Top 5 after this week...
IMO these 5 have clearly separated themselves so far and you can pretty much put them in any order.
1. Georgia Southern
2. Montana State
3. North Dakota State
4. Northern Iowa
5. Wofford
and yeah, I think the CAA has more top 25s than any other conference but none of them are on the level of these teams IMO.

I see no reason to move MSU or NDSU above UNI.

I'm not completely sold on Wofford. I'd like to see some road wins before I consider them top 5.Pwns wrote:IMO these 5 have clearly separated themselves so far and you can pretty much put them in any order.

NDSU is going to have to cut back on penalties if they want to keep that lofty ranking.

The NDSU win over Minnesota took a HUGE hit in "impressiveness" this week when Minnesota lost to Michigan 58-0 and put up a massive 177 yards, and gave up a mere 580.
Had UNI scored 2 more points against ISU they'd probably be number 1 in every poll, but now it seems even though they have won 3 straight while outscoring opponents 38-13 and putting up over 400 yards of offense per game for the season they are losing respect in the voters eyes....

Texas being up 34-0 on Iowa St in Ames is equally impressive as Minnesota being down 38-0 at the half in Ann Arbor. Neither affect my vote.............clenz wrote:Me either.JayJ79 wrote:I see no reason to move MSU or NDSU above UNI.

UNI is impressive enough without having to cut NDSU down to try in some twisted way to make UNI look better. I don't have NDSU in my top 5 and have UNI at #2. UNI clearly looks like the better team at this point in the season.

Re: Top 5 after this week...
1.Georgia Southern- 3 FCS opponents with total of 6 wins, 3 of which came from d2 teams. Their opponents have 5 losses against FCS teams. Thats 3-5 in FCS play. Haven't played a FBS team yet and had a gimme with a d2 team...
2. Montana State- Their FCS opponents only have 4 wins up to this point with 1 from a d2 team, their opponents have 7 FCS losses so 3-7 in FCS.
3. North Dakota State- 3 FCS teams with 4 wins total, they did however beat Minnesota even if they are in a freefall right now. Opponents are 4-11 against FCS teams.
4. North Iowa- Almost beat a semi decent Iowa State, who is about to hit a brick wall in the Big 12, the FCS teams they have played though have 3 total wins, with one coming against a d2 school. Their opponents are 2-8 against FCS teams
5.Wofford- Close with a pretty good Clemson... FCS opponents had 6 wins with 2 coming against d2 schools with 5 losses against FCS teams aka 4-5 against FCS. Beat App State.
Note: Didn't subtract the team discussed win against the FCS teams, so you could take 3 off the opponents FCS losses if you are so inclined.
Wofford seems to deserve the top spot within this group, they came close to beating a top 15 FBS team, what test has Georgia Southern had? Samford? No. Western Carolina? Nope. Elon? Maybe... How about Tusculum? Nope D2... Furman game in 2 weeks should be a real test of Georgia Southern, If Wofford and GS go 2-0 in next 2 games though you have to look at switching them again because Wofford faces a d2 team and a decent Citadel while GS faces a decent Chat and good Furman. Besides, love the Triple Option but Georgia Southern is ranked 2nd in Rushing Def before this current weekend so that match up would tend to favor Georgia Southern but the strength of schedule is more impressive for Wofford.
If it was just this 5 you gotta look at ranking Wofford as #1 but that might only last for a week or two even if they win both because of that d2 on the schedule.
1. Wofford
2. Georgia Southern
3. Montana State
4. Northen Iowa
5. North Dakota State
Good to see some in conference play. As for the different conferences its hard to compare the top conferences because they dont play all that much. Wouldnt it be nice if the Southern and CAA had a conference v conference weekend? But then again that might require certain teams to give up stat boosting games as well as a free win.
Could be a rough final 2 games of the season for Georgia Southern, not sure why you would want your hardest competition going into playoff season. If Alabama is in the hunt for the BCS championship Georgia Southern could be SMACKED hard leading to some potential injuries etc going into championship season (if they are eligible).

I don't go around thumping my chest about playing ISU close...in fact after that game I stated how pissed I was about the L and how there were no moral victories, etc...Gil Dobie wrote:Texas being up 34-0 on Iowa St in Ames is equally impressive as Minnesota being down 38-0 at the half in Ann Arbor. My point was had UNI scored 2 more points....or had ISU not completed that 4th and whatever it was holy shit throw the ball into the endzone after having to scramble across the field for a TD with a minute left...UNI would be the #1 team in the nation... However, it seems week after week voters here and AGS have been sliding UNI down because they are doing exactly what they should do...dominating games they should in the fashion that they should. I would also put 1000 dollars on ISU being better than Minnesota to this point in the season.
NDSU, however, has been climbing for doing the exact same thing as UNI...Winning games they should in a manner they should....
I'm missing the logic on that one.

My point was, the Minnesota game and Iowa St games really mean nothing when it comes to my vote. UNI has done more on the field and looks more disciplined than NDSU at this point. IMO, UNI is the only team that has a chance to run the table in the conference.clenz wrote:I don't go around thumping my chest about playing ISU close...in fact after that game I stated how pissed I was about the L and how there were no moral victories, etc...Gil Dobie wrote:

Georgia Southern--not much in terms of road wins but did beat Samford on the road about as bad as Wofford beat Samford at home
Montana State---quality road win over Eastern Washington (defending national champs)
North Dakota State---quality road win over BCS Minnesota
Northern Iowa---quality road win over Stephen F Austin
New Hampshire---quality road win over Richmond
In order to be a top team, you must win on the road. Wofford has not done that yet.

#1 UNI - because of their schedule I think they had played and beat better opponents than Georgia Southern.
#2 Georgia Southern - while they have been smashing their opposition, they haven't played anyone tough yet. need more time to see if they're as good as they look.
#3 Montana State - an Explosive young squad that looks to change the landscape of the big sky for sometime to come.
#4 NDSU - Strong start for the bison, but the last game was less impressive than their first three, NDSU and UNI are heading to a possible FCS game of the year at the end of this month.
#5 Wofford - huge win over Appy vaults them in to top 5 status.

Re: Top 5 after this week...
Maybe some clarity is necessary. I did say Wofford has not won on the road yet. Myself, I like conference road wins and I consider any road wins within the conference as a good win. By Wofford's schedule so far, the only road game they've played is Clemson. The win over App was over a good opponent but you need to be expected to win at home, regardless of the opponent. A win this week at Citadel could be construed as a "quality" win. Georgia Southern beat Samford and Wofford beat Samford, but I am more impressed with the Eagles win because it was on the road. Wofford may be a top 5 team, but I need them to win on the road.youngterrier wrote:Wofford has only played 2 road gamesBy definition, we really can only have like 2 potential "big wins" by your definition in Furman and maybe Chattanooga. I think that makes your point invalid
Basically, just show me you can win conference games on the road. Wofford has not had that chance yet, but it is coming.
