Thank a lot, Conks. Deny opportunity to people who just want to share in the American Dream, such as it is after years of Reaganism and W-ism. A good president coulda been in this group of kids........

:ohno: :ohno: :ohno: :ohno: :ohno:

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Hispanic students have started vanishing from Alabama public schools in the wake of a court ruling that upheld the state's tough new law cracking down on illegal immigration.

Education officials say scores of immigrant families have withdrawn their children from classes or kept them home this week, afraid that sending the kids to school would draw attention from authorities.

There are no precise statewide numbers. But several districts with large immigrant enrollments — from small towns to large urban districts — reported a sudden exodus of children of Hispanic parents, some of whom told officials they planned to leave the state to avoid trouble with the law, which requires schools to check students' immigration status.

Oh, beautiful, for spacious skies,
for amber waves of grain (picked by their parents)

And you Conks can be against the 14th Amendment if you want. But, it's the law of the land. And most of these kids are full US citizens.

Not from Bama or either side of the aisle, but as for me, the kids can stay as long as they're born in America - I don't even think that's in debate. Sure their parents need to leave then, but hey, why have immigration laws if they are just ignored. I'm all in favor of swinging the doors to a lot more legal immigration - we need as many smart, industrious people as possible. And if you make legal immigration into the US much easier and possible, then you'll have less people breaking the law to enter illegally. While this conk approach to reform is misguided, at least it's an approach rather than the other side's ignoring of it or just trying to make a political point on it. I prefer the middle approach of fixing it while letting a lot more people in legally - and again, especially the smart ones. :thumb:

RIght on. What is the puprose of laws if we aren't going to enforce them. They broke the law and took advantage of our freedoms (and our laws). So, lets get these people to become legal citizens. That way, they can come out from behind the curtains, we can tax thier income (i know i know, sales taxes are paid). :twocents:

I get what is being said about enforcing the laws... I also think it's largely and often a cop-out. I've encountered way too many people, and worked with and around far too many politicians who use that phrase as a dog-whistle for "I hate Mexicans too" To be clear - I don't believe that's the case with everyone on this board (GannonFan is no bigot - that much I know) - but that term, it's loaded with subtext in the political world... much like 40 years ago "law and order" meant - "I'll put the darkies back in their place"

My concern is that under the guise of "enforcing the laws" we're creating a climate of "show me your papers" here in America... where anyone who doesn't "look American" can have their status questioned at any time. It's beyond hostile... it's borderline fascistic.

I also think it's HIGHLY inappropriate to use school children to get to their parents. Kids have no way of knowing the status of their parents - and have done nothing wrong themselves. This kind of thing only ensures that these kids get no education and end up being a problem for society to deal with later...

You want to deal with the illegal immigration problem? start by putting up REAL fine and punishments for the jokers who HIRE them... since THAT is the reason they come here/stay here. Illegal immigration has slowed dramatically as the job prospects have worsened... it's a simple equation - if employers in this f'ing country would be willing to pay Americans a decent wage to do a job - this problem wouldn't be nearly as bad... but they LIKE being able to hire people they can exploit - pay less than minimum wage - and lord a dreaded call to ICE over their heads if they dare stand up for themselves... punish the exploitative employers - that's how you start to fix this problem.

I don't care if they are here illegally from Mexico, Canada, Egypt, or North Dakota...

Arrest and deport them, and ban them from applying for citizenship for 10 years...

Nail the companies hiring illegals since the hiring process is one time where "show me your papers" is OK...

I don't disagree - the problem that I have is the number of laws that are being implemented that basically say "if you're Latino, you're a suspect" (AZ's SB1170, the Georgia law)

The problem with your approach is actually two things - one, you're almost taking the approach that any immigration reform in inherently impossible because at some level, by some people, it could be perceived or actually bigotted, so therefore why even try. I bet there are people who are bigotted when it comes to their views on this issue, but that doesn't make the options for this issue toxic and not up for discussion. If you just look for reasons why you can't do things then you end up never doing anything.

And as for the going after companies that do the hiring, why does it need to be an either/or propositon? Why can't we do both? One wrong isn't any more wrong than the other - both are cases of people breaking the law.

Let's enforce laws that make sense and let's start making it easier to bring more people into this country - preferably the right/legal way.

I'll gladly show my ID to any cop that asks without a single complaint if it means America can stop spending billions of dollars every year to subsidize ILLEGAL immigrants.

I won't, without cause...

No one has to show ID in this country during an encounter with law enforcement unless there is a specific reason...simply asking to see my ID does not work...

Right....my point was that I would be willing to do things to keep spending money on protecting criminals.

He CAN'T show you, Colonel, because it is not true. It is perceived to be true because of the perpetual BIG LIE continuously perpetuated by TTBF and the rest of the hysterical left in their efforts to pander shamelessly to the illegal alien lobby.

The language from Arizona's SB1070, the "Support Our Law Enforcement and Safe Neighborhoods Act," includes protecftions such as "... The attorney general or county attorney shall not investigate complaints that are based solely on race, color or national origin...," and "...A person who knowingly files a false and frivolous complaint under this subsection is guilty of a class 3 misdemeanor..."
