Boomers are the problem

I've voiced this opinion many times. I think the generations that grew up in the 1970's to the 1990's will be the saving grace of this country.

I don't think so. They're worse than the Reagan-diseased generation before them for other reasons. We are doomed after that because it's, then, the IPod-Playstation-XBox fvcks who will be in charge.

Did you read the entire article, Mark? It's one theory among many, and even the author (Ruben Navarette) -- who is pretty moderate on most issues -- isn't convinced. But if the "millennials" want to effect change, they'd better start voting. Right now, their turnout record is rather poor, and there are more Boomers out there anyway.

Great topic!

Being of the 80's and Gen X I am so far, unimpressed. Much of this is cyclical and my generation was raised during an era of greed and complacency. We were sandwiched in between the change and movement of the previous generation and the tech explosion of the 90's. Half of us are nomads. The other half are government hating, greedy, Reaganites with a serious Daniel Boone complex.

Unless we learn and improve I think (as the article suggests) that it will be the smarter more open minded millenials that save the day. From a calendar standpoint and a crisis standpoint they might be the next "great generation".

The boomers did some nice work though.

Boomers as a lot are a generally some of the most self-absorbed, greedy and selfish fuckers I've ever encountered...

While Xers are right-wing shits generally, and have never really shaken the "slacker" label - Millenials (of which I technically am one... right at the beginning) are generally very goal oriented, but I will say that they have a tendency to overvalue their input and become petulant toward top-down authority structures... also - their boomer/x'er parents tend to helicopter in - even in their professional lives - which is equal parts hilarious and annoying...

as for fault... it's really hard not to look at the political demands made by the boomers of their politicians...

they are seemingly virulently anti-tax and yet want no corresponding cuts to services... when you ask what they want cut - they always go on about "waste" but can't point to a concrete example that hasn't been remedied in the last 20 years already... or moreover - that won't do shit to fix the problem...

politicians, realizing their electoral future depends on boomers - give them what they want - mostly because any time a leader tries to make hard choices, (as rare as that is) they are run out of town on a rail - and quickly.

You know, I was born in 1971, grew up in the 80's, went to college/got married in the 90's, had kids in the 00's.

Looking back, the 90's kicked some serious ass.

There was actually a story the other day about how many Boomers want to leave this country after retiring because many of 'em don't find the US havin' anything worthwhile left...

...so basically they've pretty much fucked this country with their politics, collect their benefits, and then leave.

Nice.

Ain't any generation. We're "Americans" for christ sake. We're lazy, dumb, violent, spoiled, greedy and we think the world owes us everything.

We're fucked because we're all flawed, everyone.

I'll say it again, the hippies were right - live in harmony with nature, live simply, be happy and love one another.

Really? I don't think you can make such a rash generalization about boomers. Maybe the OLDER boomers, but those of us on the younger end of the boomer scale should have our OWN designation because there's a definite split in philosophy between the 60+ boomers and the <59 boomers....

And how did that "giving them what they want" work for the politicians in 2010? :coffee:

Agreed. Those of us born from say, 58 to 64 are definately different than those born in the first 12 years.

There are these hippy types in every generation. Just go to a farmers market.

They've figured it out and are living a lifestyle that preferably sooner or, with horrifying consequences, later we are all going to have to adopt.
