September is now over and October starts. Now is when the games truly count as the playoffs are just around the corner. OK, maybe a bit around the corner, but there are still some big games coming up this weekend that could affect the playoff expectations of some teams. Last week I went 3-2 to go 21-6 for the season. I need a perfect week, but this week is tough. Here are my predictions.

UNC at UM---The Grizzlies stubbed their toe (or claw) last week at Sacramento State but has looked pretty strong at home. The Bears are still trying to find themselves, having lost last week at home to Weber State. The Grizzlies den is not too hospitable for those trying to find themselves. The Battle of the Bears goes to, who else...UM 37, UNC 15.

PSU at ISU---Last week the Vikings got smashed at the hands of a strong TCU team. This week they head on the road to face the Bengals, who are trying to recover from losing big at Northern Arizona. The Bengals have been competitive and have also earned a win already. The Vikings have also looked strong as well, but they have not won at Idaho State since 1999. Weird things seem to happen to the Vikings. A shootout...PSU 48, ISU 46.

Sac State at MSU---Interesting scenario for the Hornets. A season that started so great with a win over Oregon State has slowly started to go awry. However, they took a big step towards reclaiming that great season with a win at home against Montana. The Bobcats showed they are truly a team to be reckoned with as they took care of Eastern Washington on the road. Now they are back at home...MSU 24, Sac State 10.

WSU at EWU---The Eagles have played some strong opponents, yet have no wins to show for it, including last week's loss in their home opener against Montana State. The Wildcats have been a pleasant surprise so far with their play, including last week's win on the road against Northern Colorado. The Wildcats have looked strong while the Eagles have struggled. The question, can the Wildcats win at the Inferno?...EWU 31, WSU 24.

Sacramento State @ Montana State: BSC Game of the Week! Sac can make this a very interesting game, but the Bobcats play at home and enjoy the talents of the best placekicker in the FCS in Jason Cunningham.

Which is in sharp contrast to the Hornets' Jason Diniz, possibly the worst placekicker in the BSC right now.

Kicking field goals is not the same as shooting free throws, in that more people are involved in the success or failure of the kick. Kickers are a bit like quarterbacks, in that several factors are at play. Did the offensive line provide great protection? Was the snap good? What about the hold? Do the kicker and the holder have a great relationship? Is it the exact same hold every time? A fraction of an inch of tilt makes all the difference in the world.

Some short range kickers open up their insteps and "scoop" the ball, providing a larger sweet spot striking the ball, which increases short range accuracy and accomodates a broader range of bad ball placements on the hold, BUT this is also bad mechanics and risks knee, hip and back injury and decreases range. Mechanically, the right way to kick is to make every kick like it's a 60-yarder and a PAT at the same time, meaning to get elevation on the kick and not to open the instep or hips too much when striking the ball.This requires more accuracy and consistency, and better coordination among all the team members participating in the kick.

Surprisingly, the coaching staffs for most DI programs know very little about kicking and fail to coach it properly, neglecting about a third of the game. Jason Cunningham may be the better kicker by far, but I'll bet that he also has a better relationship with his holder and that the MSU coaches put a little more time into the kicking game than the other coaches.

Jason Cunningham (Sunshine) has had the same holder for since the 2009 season, this year we have a rookie longsnapper, Coach Ash is the special teams coach, Jason began going to Kohls(sp) camps in HS and that is how MSU's staff found him, he was the #8 ranked (Kohls) kicker in his recruiting class I believe. for the last couple of summers he has attended the Bill Cundiff Camp, Cundiff is the Ravens kicker and a played for coach Ash at Drake. I think this last summer he worked the cundiff camp as an instructor. Later in the summer he was invited by Billy to go to Arizona for summer workouts with a fairly large group of NFL kickers, holders, snappers, and punters, apparently the NFL special teams guys kind of have their own group and all do summer workouts together. He has said that he learned a lot about what it takes to kick at the next level.

21-6 is not "pretty dang good" by a long shot. The worst I've done since starting these is missing 15 last year. Missing 6 just in September is not a good start.

Seriously, though, in a nutshell...EWU needs a win, a loss would put them in serious jeopardy of missing the playoffs alltogether, game is at home for them where so far conference teams have been way better than on the road, and their backs are against the wall. On paper, especially with Johnson out, Weber is probably the best team. But I've got a hunch on this (and Scream did not bribe me).

Sacramento State @ Montana State - 30-14 MSU has been playing well and the Hornets have done poorly on the road. I hope I'm wrong here.

Portland State @ Idaho State - 31-20 Tough pick here. PSU is my BSC darkhorse this season so I think I'm obligated to pick them in these tough ones.

Weber State @ Eastern Washington - 31-17 WSU is on a roll and EWU is ridled with injuries. WSU leaves the Pad with a win.

That might depend on Phlu's philosophy, AZ. By all means, the Griz should at least show the POTENTIAL to put up half a hundred on UNC. But does that mean they should necessarily do it? If at some point the game is starting to get out of hand (i.e. up 21 in the fourth, 28 in the third, or 42 in the second, give or take a little bit), Phlu may give some thought to getting the starters out of there to not only protect them but to give the scrubs a bit of real-game PT. There's got to be nothing worse than going into Griz-Cat with the starting QB going down with a broken leg and the next guy hasn't taken a snap all year. There's also something to be said for the adage that one should not run up the score because what goes around, comes around.

That said, the Griz just might do it.
