Williams isn't a huge loss. Vidal Nelson, Pat Williams and Stephon Robertson are our starting LBs. I haven't even kept track of how much C. Williams plays.
EDIT - Just looked. He has three tackles and only played in two games this year.

Chad Byers ... not even sure he's on scholarship. I was surprised to see him in ... although I thought he was a safety ... though with the scheme change to a 4-3 from the 4-2-5 I could see why they'd move him to LB. He took a bad pursuit on that cross by Mangum ... but not sure you can really fault him since he was a LB covering a slot WR.mcveyrl wrote:Didn't somebody else come in for Robertson during the W&M game? Re: Richmond @ JMU
The D3 I played at did a urine, blood, and saliva swab for tests all at the same time. All of them were done on Monday. The swab gave results in less than 5 minutes, and it tested for 6 or 8 different drugs. It was accurate but not 100%. If anything popped on that as a positive the player was suspended until results of the other tests came back which was by Thursday.mcveyrl wrote:I don't know how in-depth testing for pot is, but I know when I give blood, they prick my finger, run it through the machine and can tell a lot in about a minute. I can't imagine it takes a long time, at least to get a preliminary result on something like that.bluehenbillk wrote:In today's world of red tape, I can't see getting test results back in less than 24 hours, especially with those hours being on a Sunday morning & afternoon.
There are questions that need to be asked & answered, I'd love to be listening to what MM has to say today.
But I agree, we still need answers to those questions. I'm guessing Barber will be asking that stuff today.
I don't like the "Oh, you just got busted using illegal drugs lets just warn you not to do it again" then come down hard on him the second time. The system is broke if it isn't a big deal the first time. Suspend on the first one.

Huh? Where exactly in the US is the recreational use of marijuana legal? We can debate the merits of such laws all we want, but it's still illegal everywhere unless prescribed by a doctor in certain areas.JMUpurplehazed wrote:My handle is perfect...hazed baby. Skins, just to clarify:JmuSkinsfan wrote:Chase Williams and Jamie Veney are our backups. Actually ... in evidence of how stacked our LBs are ... Veney and Williams both started two years ago ... and are now back-ups to Williams, Robertson and Nelson. Veney will replace Williams. Part of the reason for that is a change of schemes. JMU has run a 4-2-5 defense for as long as I can remember ... and just this year switched to the 4-3 ... in the old system 2 of those safeties were essentially 3rd and 4th LBs ... So our defense basically had 4 LBs just under different names. Vidal Nelson and Pat Williams played safety ... but are now at LB. I believe the starters 2 years ago were WS Nelson, SS Pat Williams, LB Veney and Chase Williams. Now they all play LB, in addition to Stephon Robertson (So) and Vidal Nelson (Sr)mcveyrl wrote:

EDIT - Just looked. He has three tackles and only played in two games this year.
-Pat Williams WAS NOT the starting SS 2 years ago (09') as you stated. He was starting at LB. He was the starting SS 3 yrs ago.
-Chase Williams was never a regular starter, and wasn't considered a returning starter. He did start 7 games over the course of the last 2 seasons, mainly due to injuries to starters.
08' 2 starting LBs:
-Fr (07' PG yr at FUMA) Jamie Veney
-Sr DJ Brandon 1st 7 games (knee injury vs UR), rFr Vidal Nelson last 7 games.
rFr Pat Williams started at SS (3rd team All CAA, CAA co defensive rookie of year).
09' 2 starting LBs:
-So Jamie Veney
-rSo Pat Williams (3rd team All CAA)
-Chase Williams started 2 games at LB due to injury to Veney.
-rSo Vidal Nelson started at SS
10' 2 starting LBs:
-rJr Pat Williams (career high tackles, screwed for all CAA honors)
-rFr Stefan Robertson (3rd team All CAA, CAA defensive rookie of yr)
-Jamie Veney took redshirt (calcium deposits in knee).
-Chase Williams started 4 games due to injury to pat Williams and last game due to Robertson suspension (was kicked out of W&M game).
-rJr Vidal Nelson started at SS.
this yr 3 starting LBs:
MLB rSo Robertson (pre season All CAA).
OLBs rSr Pat Williams, rSr Nelson (pre season all CAA at safety).
rJr Chase Williams and rJr Veney both are backups at OLB. Veney played in opener vs UNC, pulled hamstring, DNP last 3 games.
Mickey earlier in the seasom commented had 5 starting LBs in terms of capability & experience, only 3 could start.

-Chad Byers is a former walkon but pretty sure he's on scholly now.
-Not sure if he was a safety when he walked on in 08' last yr as a rSo he was one of the 2 backups at LB along with Chase Williams.
Byers is listed the backup to Robertson at MLB. Veney and Chase Williams are listed as the backups at OLB.
Remember, Veney injured his hammy vs UNC and DNP vs CCSU and Liberty. He was dressed for W&M, but obviously for the 1 series that Robertson went out on they thought a healthy Byers who'd been practicing at MLB was better that a maybe not 100% Veney that had been practicing at OLB.

FWIW Thorpe through 4 games:
PASSING -----GP GS Effic ---Cmp-Att-Int -Pct Yards TD Long Avg/G
Justin Thorpe 4---4 -150.5 ---32---48--2 --66.7 409 --3 --52 --102.2
RUSHING ----GP-GS Att Gain Loss Net Avg TD Long Avg/G
Justin Thorpe 4---4 -45 -224 --61 -163 -3.6 -0 --29 --40.8
Also ZERO (lost) fumbles. So only 2 turnovers through 4 games (2 INTs vs CCSU), no turnovers on the road in the 2 big games @ Liberty and @ W&M, Thorpe was starting to show he could be a premier dual threat QB at this level.

From a poster over on the Zone:
".....However, I felt I had to actually create an account to straighten some of this stuff out since a great friend got caught up in the mess.
Just to clear up the past 45 pages of rumors. 12 players were tested last week. 5 failed. This was Thorpe and C. Williams second offense so they are suspended. They are not roommates. Jamie Veney was not one the remaing three who were busted for their first offense. He didn't play because Byer is the backup MLB and Chase and Veney are backup OLBs.
The test are internal to the JMU athletic department and a specified number of times a certain percentage of the team is tested. (Not using exact numbers because I'm honestly not completely sure.)
MATTHEWS DETERMINES WHO WILL BE TESTED. That means that Matthes knew Thorpe and C Williams had failed a drug test before but still put the program reputation first and tested his starting QB (I wonder how many other HC would). Unlike some that said they were embarassed by this incident I am pround that JMU has this policy and thus far, following it exactly. Take this along with the Rose brothers who were suspended indefitenly for a better part of a year when later the charges were dropped (Compared to the recent events at Liberty with Asa Chapman), and I am even more proud to wear purple and gold."
Pretty well put IMHOP.

The mythical creature known as DT Nick Emmons will be playing...
He's an Army transfer that was injured in the VT Game last year(!) and is just now returning to play. Dukes fans have no idea what to expect form him because his only complete game for us was against Morehead State. His backup (Lamar Middleton, I believe) has actually started more games than he has.

Emmons isn't listed on the 2 deep. I don't imagine he'll start, but he'll likely see a lot of action. He played all of Spring Ball and summer camp before he dinged up his knee the week before UNC.mcveyrl wrote:At this point, I'm not sure Emmons shouldn't be the backup...Dukie95 wrote:The mythical creature known as DT Nick Emmons will be playing...

Ranking JMU's DTs entering the season from what I've seen, heard and read:
1. Jr Sean O'Neil: out for season vs CCSU
2. 6th/7th yr Sr Nick Emmons- missed 1st 4 games, playing vs UR
3. rSr Lamar Middleton- starting vs UR
4. rSo Jordan Stanton- starting vs UR
5. rSo Bingham Togia- listed on 2 deep vs UR, don't know if he'll play much with Emmons back
6. rFr Anthony McDaniel- listed on 2 deep vs UR, don't know if he'll play much with Emmons back
Could see JMU doing a 3 man rotation with Middleton, Stanton, & Emmons. The 3 of them should be pretty solid, and UR's starting center is a true freshman.
