Some of you Conks need to read this book. I'm sure most everybody here has relatives in the poverty and poverty wage bind. Loaned it to D1B, he'd be glad to send it to one of you.

Where I live that's called "selective memory".

I have SEVERAL neices and nephews who live below the poverty line and TO A PERSON it's wholly because of their bad decisions. Decided to drop out of school...decided to get knocked up....decided to have the baby....decided not to get a higher education....end up working at Home Depot or Bennigans....got knocked up AGAIN....from a DIFFERENT guy....because the first kid's dad is now in prison....would rather spend money on floating the river and skydiving than holding a decent job or trying to get ahead in life.

Yep. Just circumstances.    You call them circumstances....people with a brainstem call them CHOICES.

Honestly....they're flesh and blood and I have absolultely ZERO sympathy for them. ZERO. ZIP. NADA. They made their bed, they can lay in it....figuratively speaking of course, since they probably don't have an ACTUAL bed, just a mattress on the floor.

Oh, bullshit Cappy!

There's 1000's of reasons why folks wind up living in poverty: Some "legit" where the person simply wasn't born with the ability to succeed and function within society (...think, "Opie"). The vast majority I know (and I know plenty because I "help" many out with my time, money and possesions) wound up in those circumstances due to piss poor decisions. With males, it's usually due to laziness and chemical dependency, with females, usually due to horrendous choice in sexual partners.

Conks don't wholly condemn government assistance...they simply want people receiving assistance to learn from and remediate the mistakes which landed them in poverty.

Males who'd rather sit around getting stoned? Force them to work for the local government in trade for their assistance.

Females who fuck around with jobless Jethro, wind up as single mother? Put the children up for adoption, make mother work to pay for her incompetence (in ADDITION to Jethro's).

Cappy, if I have a brain fart tonight, go next door and beat my neighbor with a baseball bat...

...when the dust settles, I'll be financially taking care of his wife, kids and grandkids for the rest of my life: Not the government.

When someone fucks up and makes a poor life choice...how can you place that responsibility (blame) on our government??
"That is how government works - we tell you what you can do today."

I've wasted precious minutes reading this goddamn tripe and I can honestly say this as somebody who has dealt with the public for the last 13 years:

- EACH CASE IS DIFFERENT. AND YOU ARE A FUCKING IDIOT IF YOU DON'T THINK THERE AREN'T ABUSERS WHEN IT COMES TO EVERY FORM OF GOVERNMENT HELP. YOU ARE ALSO A FUCKING IDIOT IF YOU THINK PEOPLE WITH MONEY AND CREATURE COMFORTS ARE RESPONSIBLE TO HANDLE THEIR OWN OBLIGATIONS AS WELL.-

There, okay, got that off my chest. Bottom line, the entire American system needs an overhaul. Yes, there are people who have made bad choices and still continue to do so with not one bit of forethought to the repercussions. Yes, there are people who are trying to turn their lives around and better themselves. If our government would learn to WORK TOGETHER, take each case and look at it objectively YET truthfully, God only knows how much improvement this country would see.

Unfortunately, a lot of it boils down to personal responsibility and there is a TON of that lacking in this nation right now in all classes, in all genders and in all races. Just my 2.

Big deal. It's what I did for four years in college and what millions of people do as they make sacrifices to climb up to something better.

Although I love dogs, I had no pet because I could not afford one.

I drove a sh!t car - when I had enough $$ for gas.

I ate peanut butter and tuna fish, but did not have enough $$ for ice cream.

Other than beer on some weekends when I had some spare change for PBR, I did not have enough $$ for "entertainment" expenses, but I had a very rich and interesting life anyway.

I lived in sh!tholes in the summers so I could save money for school from my farm labor jobs.

Compassion? Look, being a social worker is great, someone has to do it, But even you know that a good majority of the poeple that are in these situations ares there because of certain circumstances which they chose through thier decisions to live beyond thier means, dropping out of high school.college, etc.... Some people are set up for failure with shitty parents and they never have a chance, and those people I feel for. But even those sort of people can pull themselves up thier boot straps. It's happened before.

Example, I work with a woman. She went to Brown. Has a degree is Classical Piano. She's very intelligent, sharp, prompt, hard working woman. She chose to have sex with an illegal Mexican who was a drug dealer. Now she has three kids, he's been deported/incarcerated and she can't make ends meet. His family is poor and illegal so they aren't any help and her family isn't here to help. She luckily has a job with a great company but doesn't make enough to support herself, the three kids, the debt, etc... She made those decisions. For better or for worse. :twocents:

:twocents:
Agree, except for the majority part. *Most of the working poor do pull themselves up and never step foot in our doors.

So what do we do with them?

Should we not provide modest resources to help someone who wants to turn their life around and make up for past mistakes?

So, they make a mistake: Why is it required (by conkaholics) that they pay for said mistake for eternity?

What about their children, who did not make those decisions?
"Sarah Palin absolutely blew AWAY the audience tonight. If there was any doubt as to whether she was savvy enough, tough enough or smart enough to carry the mantle of Vice President, she put those fears to rest tonight. She took on Barack Obama DIRECTLY on every issue and exposed... She did it with warmth and humor, and came across as the every-person....it's becoming mroe and more clear that she was a genius pick for McCain."

No you wouldn't Appy. It takes hard work and you're fat and lazy. It requires toughness as well as compassion and you're a weak-minded fuckwad.

You just keep doing what you're doing, loser, and I'll be here when you hit rock bottom, to take care of you or your family. :thumb:
Compassion? Look, being a social worker is great, someone has to do it, But even you know that a good majority of the poeple that are in these situations ares there because of certain circumstances which they chose through thier decisions to live beyond thier means, dropping out of high school.college, etc.... Compassion and toughness, Ibanez.

*You know that nothing burns a social worker more than some fuckhead working the system.
