Albany left a lot of points on the board against Maine, but Maine left even more.

Warren Smith is a good runner but he missed a ton of open receivers. Maine should have put the game away in the first quarter, but didn't.

Dane- Maine primarily a running or a passing team? And, how was their pass rush against you?

Back to football: Maine was no rush, all pass against Pitt, but had a pretty balanced offense against Bryant and Albany. A couple completions for 24 yards, not an especially vertical attack. Smith gained a lot of yards on QB draw plays, some designed, some just escaping the rush.

Maine only sacked Albany once (for three yards) but a lot of Albany's 37 pass attempts were screens, swings, and dinks.

Don't worry, they'll mysteriously disappear sometime around 3PM on Saturday when they have to deal with an 0-1 CAA start.

As for Maine, I'm actually worried about this game - it's a trap game in between the CAA opener and the big game against pre-season fave W&M the following week. Playing in Orono is always difficult, although at least it's not late in the year. And besides, I think Cosgrove always does better with teams that come in with little or no expectations - it's when Maine is actually predicted to be pretty good when he really starts to falter as a coach. Should be a really good game.

I feel sorry for us really. We'll probably lose. We're just a third-year startup program. Most of our players are only juniors and sophomores. But, by golly, we can still kick your ass in basketball and sailing and field hockey, because we really care about those sports.

Just the fact that we'll stay within 10 points will be a moral victory for our fledgling program.
