Agree with 1990's post, but I think we need to focus mostly on high-tech, high value-added manufacturing. Our university system is the envy of the world, and there's no reason not to leverage such a tremendous advantage. Stop sending all of the engineering and computer sciences PhDs back to Asia and encourage them/make it easier for them to stay here.

I am on board with this in theory, but let's not forget that the key to national defense is a strong industrial base. Steel, plastics, you name it. Having the world's biggest military is not nearly as necessary as have the ability to BUILD that military quickly when it is needed.Grizalltheway wrote:Agree with 1990's post, but I think we need to focus mostly on high-tech, high value-added manufacturing. In 1937 we were ranked somewhere around 10-15th in the world in terms of military size. We had a strong industrial base, and Isoruku Yamamoto fully recognized the US potential for military growth when he told the IJA and IJN that he could only guarantee one years of successes once at war.
Personally, I have always thought that politicians who completely shun the idea of industrial protectionism are not just squandering Amercian jobs. They are also killing our national defense.
