Big South Power Rankings and Week 2 Discussion

Post by ToTheLeft »

Rankings:

1. Liberty - A deceptive scoreline hides a fairly competitive outing against NCST. However...

2. Stony Brook - has essentially closed the gap between the two with a very impressive performance against UTEP...

3. Coastal - and CCU is right in the mix thanks to a win over a respectable Furman team. We won't know how CCU stacks up against the other two until everyone plays similar opponents.

4. Presbyterian - Hard to argue with the results. They gave Wofford the same gritty performance that earned them a win over a ranked LU team a couple years ago, but the Terriers scampered away with a win.

5. VMI - Didn't win, but they held their own against a MEAC school. Which is better than...

6. G-W - ...holding your own against Brevard. Hopefully G-W was just working the kinks out.

7. CSU - Will be impossible to fairly judge this team for a couple weeks.

Week 2 Matchups -

Presby vs NGU (DII)
VMI vs William and Mary
CSU @ Florida State
SBU @ Buffalo
Liberty vs. Robert Morris
CCU vs. Catawba
G-W @ Ohio

Also, I have seen a couple posters mentioning the BSC could be a 2 bid league this year, so I will keep track of the playoff hopes for each team every week, just for fun.

Liberty - Loss to NC State. Doesn't hurt chances. Will need wins against FCS opponents to build resume.

SBU - Will need a win over Buffalo for a legitimate shot at an at-large, as OOC schedule is weak in terms of FCS opponents.

CCU - Depending on how good Furman is, their resume may already have a good enough win to sneak in to the expanded playoff format, especially considering that the committee tends to look to the past for teams to include, and CCU has made the playoffs before.

G-W - Similar situation to SBU. Needs to beat an FBS team for a legitimate resume.

VMI - Had they won this weekend, hopes could be had for a playoff bid if the Keydets had an incredible year. And to be fair, they could still play out of this world and make it. If only every other BSC school could schedule like VMI or Presby (WM, Citadel, Richmond, Akron, Del St as OOC for VMI)

CSU - Scheduled themselves out of the discussion

Presby - Forgive my ignorance, but I am not sure on Presby's playoff eligibility. I am fairly sure they're not eligible, but if they were... They have a real shot if they keep playing competitively with the SoCon. Games against Furman and GSU combined with 5 Big South wins would be 7 wins and an impressive resume. I doubt this will happen, but it's there just in case.

Gotta let usu get these money games out of the way and IF we can stay healthy with no critical injuries in key positions you should get a good idea where the Bucs are against Jax in week 3.
