JMU Sells Out Two Games
Re: JMU Sells Out Two Games
At any rate, this is a JMU thread and these numbers coming in are impressive. Congrats to you, but you're all still girlie men with streamers to me.

OK, so it's specifically from WHERE out of state they are. It's still the same thing.JMUDuke2002 wrote:So, this idea that they are out of state doesn't make too much sense to me, especially at a program like Delaware. I think it may have more to do with you are pulling more kids from the Northeast which, largely, doesn't give a sh*t about college football anyway. They are into the Iggles, Giants, Pats, Sox, Yankees...the pros.

Yes and no. Being out-of-state doesn't mean they won't like a game. Where they come from is more important. I'm sure JMU kids from out-of-state attend games. Who knows.89Hen wrote:OK, so it's specifically from WHERE out of state they are. It is interesting to me that UD has problems getting students to game. You guys have a great product so I'm a little astonished to be honest.
The numbers are impressive, more than I thought it would be. I'm just hoping the team does well so the numbers can be maintained. If we have yet another bad season with horrible offensive production, those numbers won't be around in 2012.

Great job JMU. So far this season App has zero sellouts. Time to move up, right?

I don't know exactly what it is but I'm sure some of it is tailgating rules and no readmittance rules. Most schools probably have the same, but when I was at UD you were allowed to bring kegs, you could stay in the lot if you wanted, you could reenter the game if you wanted to go out at halftime, etc... Now you can't do any of that.JMUDuke2002 wrote:It is interesting to me that UD has problems getting students to game. You guys have a great product so I'm a little astonished to be honest.

And students didn't come into the game then either. I've been going to games since the early 70's - they've never come.89Hen wrote:I don't know exactly what it is but I'm sure some of it is tailgating rules and no readmittance rules. Honestly, you may be onto something with the makeup of your student body argument. JMU also has a large number of out of state students from the Philly/NYC/Boston area ... and as far as I've experienced with my friends from there, they are the ones that are least likely to attend the games. It may be because they prefer to get hammered (not always true) and stay in the parking lot ... or they just don't have a huge interest in FCS football or college football in general ... but you're probably onto something there.

Re: JMU Sells Out Two Games
Richmond is only 25% in-state as well. And before anyone jumps on UR for low attendance, the opening game last season saw 2,200 students attend out of a total of 3,000. And of those 3,000 maybe three to four hundred were actually abroad for the semester. Students averaged about 1.200 a game last season which is 40% of the student body.

That's great student attendance - I think Wofford has 40% of the student body on the football teamBostonspider wrote:Richmond is only 25% in-state as well. Hey JMUers - how many did you guys take to Blacksburg last year?
Re: JMU Sells Out Two Games
I heard around 5-10,000, not sure the exact number because they were scattered throughout the stadium. But you could hear them on the TV set, JMU fans were pretty loud.

So you're claiming that 2,200 of 2,700 students on campus were at the game?Bostonspider wrote:Richmond is only 25% in-state as well. Re: JMU Sells Out Two Games
Being from the "north" and now living in VA, I have noticed, and have embraced, the notion that people are identified by their alma mater. It's not from a good school or bad school perspective though. It's mostly to set a topic of conversation and is often sports related. Many times I will hear someone say something like, "That guy over there is _____'s father and he went to Florida St." It was odd to hear at first but, as a sports fan, it gives me some ammo for a future conversation. It's hard to describe this "tagging" but I have found it to be extremely useful. Over time, I have been able to link people by saying, "So, I hear you went to Wake Forest. Do you know so-and-so?"
The point I'm trying to make is that college affiliation is more important here than in the North, at least from my experience. This attitude trickles down to pre-college aged kids and once they land on a campus, I think they are more likely to "make the most of it" by joining fraternities, attending sporting events, etc. So I believe there is some validity to the argument that students (macro view) from different regions may have different interest levels as it pertains to college athletics.

Another thing on college FB weekends in the south (from VA on down) you see all over the road the cars with the school magnets & flags heading to or back from tailgates & games- the ACC, SEC, So-Con, southern CAA, etc.CAA Flagship wrote:Being from the "north" and now living in VA, I have noticed, and have embraced, the notion that people are identified by their alma mater. I go to most of JMU's CAA northern games since my brother & his family live in CT (he's a HS FB umpire in CT). I've noticed don't see nearly as much of the car magnets & flags up north on college FB weekends.

It's funny here in SC - when we moved down three years ago we met one person who said "Are you gonna pull for Clemson or Carolina?" We said "We're both App grads and a Wake Forest grad." She said "You have to pick one, either Clemson or Carolina."BDKJMU wrote: Another thing on college FB weekends in the south (from VA on down) you see all over the road the cars with the school magnets & flags heading to or back from tailgates & games- the ACC, SEC, So-Con, southern CAA, etc.

Having grown up in NC, Carolina will always be light blue - given where I am and working near Clemson I'll pick USC.

Haha, yeah, every time I see a VT fan I get this urge to say 21-16. But it is funny how people will label you based on what school you go to or the school you support.
