Guys,
This year, make sure you take in a DII or DIII game or two in your area. If your FCS boys are out of town and you can't get there, go see the small schools and take the family. Cheap eats, cheap tickets, great football and a wonderful family atmosphere. Let the kids run around behind the stands, they're never too far away.
It's all college football and it's all exciting. Adopt a local small school and make some friends there. And, college chicks are hot, no matter where they are!

It ain't about the money at DIII.

Teams I'll definitely be seeing: St. Olaf, Carleton, Winona State, UW-Eau Claire, UW-La Crosse, Minnesota State, St. Cloud State, UM-Duluth, etc.

The son of a friend of mine went to NAIA Northern Montana to play basketball. After getting up there he decided he could play co-rec basketball the rest of his life but he only has a few years left to play football. He is going to be playing WR for them this year and I'm hoping to catch one of his games. He played 8-man football in high school so it will be interesting to see him adjust.

For me, I'll be rooting for the following D-III teams:

University of Chicago (UAA, Ivy counterpart in D-III, UAA does not participate in football playoffs )
Johns Hopkins (Centennial Conference, not sure about their participation in playoffs)

and...

Mount Union (Ohio Athletic Conference)

D-II:

Grand Valley State (GLIAC)

And yes, he's really smart and really rich.

Not watching a D-II or D-III game per se but I do want to see McNeese play Sioux Falls. I realize this is a nothing to gain type of game for McNeese but Sioux Falls is a program that only lost one game in the past three years and that was in the 2010 NAIA championship game. I think they've been better than the majority of FCS teams have been. No guarantee that they''ll be up to their recent standards in this 2011 season while they're making the transition to NCAA D-II but you have to have some respect for a program that's done what they've done at their level.

The NESCAC schools take the stuffy rich kid schtick of the Ivys to a whole new level (they even tell the DIII playoffs to F off). Try finding a black dude on either of those teams.

The rivalry between the two Massachusetts Colleges goes back to a time before football, in the early 1800s, when Williams' second president, Zephaniah Swift Moore, left the school to create his own college, Amherst. He took with him some faculty, students, and library books. Some at Williams still call Amherst students and alumna "The Defectors."
How can they be overdue?
A few years ago, the Williams band did some calculations and billed the Amherst band for $18 billion -- a fine for Moore's "overdue" books,

How the heck did his name get in here? The Boss edited the Williams paper and in 1951 predicted his Ephs would roll over the Lord Jeffs. And they did, winning 40-7. So maybe The Boss has some right to criticize journalists.

Recently retired Williams assistant coach Renzie Lamb gave a yearly pregame pep talk. This part rarely varied: "If you wish to be happy for an hour, get intoxicated. If you wish to be happy for three days, get married. If you wish to be happy for eight days, kill your pig and eat it. If you wish to be happy forever, beat Amherst."

Well, what else is there to do?
In 1992, SI called "The Walk" the best postgame tradition in college football. When the Ephs win, they walk, uni-clad, to a barber shop where they drink cold beverages and cheer and sing. Sometimes things get really wild and someone shaves their head.

My daughter is a Bethel grad, they have been very good lately, challenging powerhouse St John's and St Thomas.

St Thomas plays a pretty good brand of football. Getting my MBA there right now, and have a friend whose brother played there through last season, so I've been to a couple games.

I plan on being at at least one Azusa Pacific game. Really looking forward to them moving up to D-II and joining the GNAC so i'll get to see them play Humboldt State every year!

Not sure about getting down to Oxy or Whitter but i'll try.

Also plan on seeing at least one BC game on the season so i'll get in some of the NJCAA action as well!

The closest D-III school to me is Christopher Newport University and I refuse to support anything associated with them. This school has come a long way in a few short years thanks to a ton of money raised by a former state legislator that is the President of the school. He has gotten a lot of aid from his "contacts". At the rate they are growing in size and reputation, it won't be long until we will have to deal with them at the D-1 level. I want to keep these f---ers DOWN.

Good post Cap'n. WCU is open on Sep 17 so I am thinking about taking in 2 local d2 games that day. Mars Hill at Brevard 2pm, then a quick 30 minute drive down the mountain on hwy 276 to see Tusculum vs North Greenville at 7pm, which will actually be broadcast on Asheville/Gville/Spburg's channel 40. 2 potentially good matchups. Love some d2 football!

My brother-in-law used to be head of campus housing there (now actually is head of housing at Southern Utah). nice facilities and as you said - a ton of state support, but do you really think they'll ever move to DI? Its a pretty small school that seems to fit pretty well at the DIII level.

Closest D.II school is Bowie State, which is where I played my home high school games. I might as well just go to a high school game. It would be more competitive.

If Stevenson starts up a football program, I might go see them play.

Oh well. I used to root for MIT back when I started rooting for Harvard but because they're in the NESCAC, I gave up. [NESCAC, due to their nature of participating in football, doesn't get much national recognition. This has turned me off on them.]
