Glutton For Punishment: Griz/Cat 2010 Redeaux

So, to prep for this season, I decided to rewatch the Griz/Cat game from last year....I forgot how much I'd forgotten regarding this game, and what led ultimately to a Griz defeat.

Conclusion #1: 3:58 left in the 1st quarter the Bobcats score their second TD and the Griz offense has been on the field for exactly ELEVEN seconds. One play. Granted, that one play was a 59 yard Chase Reynolds TD run, but still. Christ, with the snow, wind and cold, the Griz defense may very well have been gassed at that point.

Conclusion #2: Denarius McGee might be good. Howling, swirling wind and he goes 5-5 to open the game and is throwing darts through the wind in the first quarter. Leads the Cats on a 7:50 drive ending in a TD pass to the big bruiser back....

Conclusion #3: The Bobcats can claim otherwise all they want, but they are REALLY going to miss O. Davis. That dude was the real deal, and had an innate ability to make really good tacklers miss. That is NOT going to be an easy hole to just plug someone in.

Conclusion #4: I already miss Chase Reynolds. Watching the heart, desire and drive with which he plays (and knowing he was playing with basically one good arm) just makes me really worried that we can't/won't catch that lightning in a bottle this year and in future years.

Conclusion #5: Justin Roper played a great 1st quarter, and engineered an excellent answering drive to tie the score at the end of the first quarter. Roper made all the right decisions and ended up with a QB keeper from the 6 yard line.

Interesting that in this horrible weather, the defenses were almost powerless to stop the offenses in the first quarter. 2 total incompletions in the first quarter and Reynolds already with 100 yards rushing.

Conclusion #6: Eric Stoll should be getting a shot somewhere in the NFL to at least make a practice squad. That dude just has a nose for the football and hits like a freight train.

Conclusion #7: I SURE hope the Griz wrap up and improve their tackling this year. On Orenzo Davis's 2nd TD run, he was hit about 7 times, and NOBODY wrapped up...they're all trying to deliver a knockdown blow instead of just fundamental tackling.

Conclusion #8; After 25 minutes of flawless football, the offenses decided to take the rest of the game off.

Conclusion #9: :06 left in the half, and Montana's starting cornerback Brandon Dodson is ejected. On a play on which there were offsetting penalties. How in the FUCK does that work?

Conclusion #4: I already miss Chase Reynolds. Watching the heart, desire and drive with which he plays (and knowing he was playing with basically one good arm) just makes me really worried that we can't/won't catch that lightning in a bottle this year and in future years.

The play on which he dislocated the shoulder was brutal...flying up in the air and landing right on it. Arm basically hanging lifeless at his side.

Conclusion #10: I sure hope Gerald Kemp runs more forcefully in 2011 than he did in this game. He looked somewhat scared and unsure in the backfield...

And there it is. After a great drive by the Griz, we get Kemp's fumble at the 2 yard line. Would have tied the score.

This costs Griz as McGee is able to complete a critical 3rd down pass in front of Sean Murray for a first down.

Conclusion #11: MSU's miniature offensive line wore down and by midway through the 2nd half, the Griz run defense is pretty much impenetrable.

Nice missed call by the refs, the ball goes off the lineman's back but the refs miss it.

Or the holding by the Cats left tackle on just about every running play?

Why? Why? When you're getting 8-10 yards per run, would you EVER try and throw it in this game? First a crappy pass along the sideline by Roper, then the very next play he's picked off....ANOTHER drive where Reynolds is having his way with the Bobscats and Roper fucks it up.

Jesus, am I glad he's gone. Talk about addition by subtraction.

Conclusion #12: The only thing that stopped the Griz in the 2nd half was themselves. Fumbles and INT's... 4 minutes left in the 3rd and the Griz have absolutely OWNED the field, just can't close the deal.

Conclusion #12: The only thing that stopped the Griz in the 2nd half was themselves. Fumbles and INT's... 4 minutes left in the 3rd and the Griz have absolutely OWNED the field, just can't close the deal.

So how did the do in the 4th Q, they had a whole quarter to do something if they owned the field

Fact is that Ash'e decision to give you both the wind and the ball at the beginning of the 3rd is what won the game. when we held you off all 3rd quarter the game was over at the beginning of the 4th.
