Bloomberg - KBR Inc. was selected for a no-bid contract worth as much as $568 million through 2011 for military support services in Iraq, the Army said.

The Army’s decision was announced yesterday only hours after the Justice Department said it will pursue a lawsuit accusing the Houston-based company of taking kickbacks from two subcontractors on Iraq-related work. The Army also awarded the work to KBR over objections from members of Congress, who have pushed the Pentagon to seek bids for further logistics contracts.

On a serious note regarding Libya, how does what we did there (i.e. use minimal forces on the ground and instead use proxies to do the actual fighting and just give strategic and logistical support from the air and also in terms of hardware) differ from what was originally done in Afghanistan? We basically beat the Taliban initially using the same strategy by sending in Special Forces that coordinated warlords that were predisposed to align against the Taliban. So the strategy worked well both times, at least initially, in that the ruling power was overthrown.

The question is now, how do we avoid Libya turning into another Afghanistan? Granted, Libya's a little more advanced than Afghanistan in terms of infrastructure, but at the same time, only on the coast - the rest of the country is as backwards and undeveloped as Afghanistan is. How do we avoid this place turning into another quagmire? Personally, I don't see how anything we can do can avoid places like this being festering grounds for trouble in the long term. We can be heels on the ground in Afghanistan for the next 10 years and as soon as we leave it will start falling apart again until we need to re-intervene. Does the same happen for Libya?

The thing is, Afghanistan was never a solely US-affair either. Both operations, Afghanistan and Libya, have had full US backing. The real fighting on the ground in both affairs have been done by indigenous rebel groups, but just having British and French pilots flying the sorties doesn't mean that it isn't America doing the strategy. British and French were in Afghanistan too. I agree with your comment that Libya isn't as backwards and Stone-Agish as Afghanistan is, but it's not really that far off from that. This isn't Iraq where there is a decently-educated populace, and it's not Egypt either - there's not much history, ancient or recent, pointing to Libya being a nice, stable place. It's almost the desert version of Afghanistan.

For the record, I have no problem with toppling Quadaffi (sp?), I'm just realistic in that I think Libya's going to be a place for decades, if not longer, that could cause trouble for us in the future. I wouldn't doubt that a President 10-20 years from now will need to clear out whoever rules that place, just like we'll have to indefinitely do with Afghanistan.

We've just spend a billion dollars (the reported money so far, but you know it was far more than that) toppling another bad guy who just a little while ago was one of our friends. Oil prices went up and cost us, and will still be costing us, billions and billions more. And what has Obama done to help the US economy? Nada.

And where did the looted weapons go? You think Obama's Mexican gun swap snafu was a bad thing...wait until Ghaddaffi's weapons start turing up in the strangest places.

Don't worry though, Obama is still helping Haliburton make money and they've got things under control. CHANGE, indeed...

Oh, and Libya has billions stored away in western banks...all locked up by the West. You can bet Obama and company will make sure that money goes to the poor Libyans.
