Delaware-Navy 2011 thread

Post by bonarae »

-Majority (including myself) at the other site says that the game will be close, but only one is optimistic that Delaware will pull an upset.
-Triple option is still alive and well at Navy, and can Delaware repeat its performance against Georgia Southern's similar offense in the playoffs last year?

Anything to add or explain here? Discuss.
All the Ivy League needs to become relevant again is to diversify its OOC schedule.

Navy lost Dobbs right? They'll be breaking in a new QB. I think it will be a good close game.

I think there's a good chance Delaware wins this game. :coffee:

Should be a decent contest. UD's biggest issue is how well the QB (Sasek) will play. He didn't separate himself very well from our backup who I've never been that impressed with. Otherwise, UD is stacked everywhere else on offense & our defensive front seven should be very good as well. The DB questions that UD has won't matter much against Navy.

Always a good time in Annapolis - actually the UD game is normally their best attended home game of the year - with the help of about an average of 8,000 UD fans there....

I thinks duh Fightin' Chickens will have to score early, and often, to beat Navy. Should be a really entertaining game to watch.

The Navy offense will not fall off much from last year - Proctor will throw even LESS than Dobbs. If the Delaware defense can hold Navy under 300 yards rushing and snag a few turnovers, it could get very interesting.

Otherwise - it's a track meet. First team to score 35+ points wins.

We've seen just about every type of game in this series. Last two Hen wins were 59-52 (in regulation!) and 21-17. The Hens have definitely had luck stuffing the triple option in some years. With Navy having a new QB, and it being the first game of the season... I like the Hens chances much better than if the game were in November when it normally is.

Folks have to remember that this series is 7-7 since it restarted in 1985. I'm not sure how Delaware winning can be considered much of an upset. :?

Agreed. In fact, it's about the surest bet FCS against FBS this year.

Gotta disagree when you say the DB play won't matter much against Navy. Yes, your secondary's coverage ability won't be critical, but run support will be. WM and UD both had good defenses last year, but UD faired much better against GSU. The primary reason being the physical/aggressive play of your secondary, especially the safeties. Stopping the triple option takes a full team effort on defense.

Close game, yes. I say Navy wins, but a Delaware win is DEFINITELY within the realm of possibility.

Plus, if LV buys into that FBS-is-automatically-a-ton-better-than-FCS trash, you're at LEAST looking at a Delaware win ATS. Therefore, win or lose on the field, go put some cache down on Delaware. You're bound to make some green regardless.

I guess I'll change my prediction: First team to 50 points wins.

That ... and The Stink stunk it up with a bunch of turnovers.

Delaware wins 24-21 on a FG with under a minute left.

Do the Hens have a decent kicker this year? I think it's a FG game, but I see it going the other way. :twocents:

Oh I agree with you, you're correct that tackling is a huge part of stopping the option & we had a helluva safety in Bratton last year to lead the way. Tackling with this group doesn't seem to be an issue though. The separation with this year's secondary versus last years is in coverage. Case in point Marcus Burley who has played the past couple years mostly in a backup role, partly in a starter role is a good tackler, but has been picked on in coverage situations. Fortunately the CAA isn't stocked with high-powered passing offenses this year.

Navy may have to replace Dobbs.. but UD has to replace Devlin. Hope I'm wrong, but I don't see UD.. with a brand new QB being able to score enough points (28+) to beat Navy.

BHBK
Who do you think ends up making most of the tackles vs this offense. Look back at the last few meeting we have had with them and if my memory serves me well, the DB's have high #'s.

UD will struggle offensively, never a good thing vs the Mids. Look at the scores of the last few constests.

I'll repeat what I said on gohens and predict a hen victory 38-22. Hammer navy with our excellent o-line and pierce and then play action navy into submission. Pierce goes for 125 and I believe navy puts the ball on the ground 3 times leading to easy short field touchdowns for Delaware. Let the game(s) begin!!!! :D

If you're giving 16 points I'll take that bet for as much as you want to wager. 8-) 8-) 8-)

Tubby is old & senile by now - he gets pissy whenever you bring up throwing to the tight end or getting the plays in.

This game could be a repeat of what happened in 1999.

U.S. Navy Kill Chickens
World IN BRIEF / ANNAPOLIS, MD September 26, 1999|From Times Wire Reports
About 60 U.S. Navy personnel in Annapolis slaughtered 60 chickens to control the city's worst outbreak of animal disease. Chickens were slaughtered on the football field to stop an epidemic of Newark disease, named for their hometown city. About 25,600 people witnessed the massacre. The virus is not believed to pose a risk to humans.

I'm hoping they won't.. but there is a good chance that they will.. as UD will be playing an inexperienced and unproven QB vs a defense that has actually game planned to defend against that inexperienced QB. I know some Hen fans are pointing to Sasek's performance vs JMU.. but that was as a backup vs a defense that expected to be facing a UD offense run by Devlin. You can bet your bottom dollar that had JMU known that they were going to see Sasek as opposed to Devlin that their 'D' would have given UD an entirely different look. I expect that the Navy defense will do whatever is necessary to take away or limit the UD running game and force Sasek to prove that he is cable of hurting them in the air. If Navy can take away the running game and put an inexperienced QB in a lot of 3rd and longs.. it could be a long day or the Hen offense.
