SFA Football Holds Open Tryout
Seriously? What? Not enough guys on the team? What the coaches are seeing is that bad?
And....isn't this a little late to be adding guys when the season starts the next day?

Re: SFA Football Holds Open Tryout
Are you sure they don't do this at Texas State? Or even Texas? I know here in Virginia, all public universities are required to have at least one open tryout for each sport. I mean you never really hear about it, and I bet most schools just advertise it through "student announcements" or something similarly inconspicuous, but it is there. I wouldn't be surprised if it's the same in TX.CatMom wrote:Seriously? What? Not enough guys on the team? What the coaches are seeing is that bad?

Also, they're usually held close to the season's start because it has to be during a time when most students are either on campus or beginning to file into campus.

Re: SFA Football Holds Open Tryout
I don't think UNI has any "public tryouts", but anyone wanting to try to talk on is able to show up the first day of practice and try to make the team.

Re: SFA Football Holds Open Tryout
Of course we have walk-ons on the roster. One of the best players we had the past 4 seasons (Marcus Clark) was a walk-on and he ended up being a 4 year starter. However, our walk-ons have already been in camp; some in the spring and the others since practice started 2 weeks ago.∞∞∞ wrote:Are you sure they don't do this at Texas State? Or even Texas? Call me stupid (wouldn't be the first time) but I would assume that anyone that wants to walk on to a college football team wouldn't wait that long to do so.

If it isn't known that "random" walk-ons are welcome they aren't going to show up.CatMom wrote:Of course we have walk-ons on the roster. I'm having a bit of fun with this...lighten up. Yes, it was a reasonably honest first post but it also hits my funny bone.

Re: SFA Football Holds Open Tryout
There are midly sinister undertones here that walk-ons are terrible football players and that teams must be desperate to have them. Clay Matthews was a walk-on in college and now he's standing on the podium at the Super Bowl. Well done, Clay.
As for the rest of you!

Kurt Warner was a walk-on at UNI, so was Bryce Paup. UNI's current head coach walked at on UNI during his day, and was one of the best LB in UNI history. His nickname is The Walk-on from Waukon.
There are two types of walk-ons. The type that was recruited and asked to walk-on. Then there is a guy who just shows up and wants to try to play.
Did Clay Matthews just show up to camp one day and go "Coach, I think I'd like to try to play this game."?
I don't know what you're reading....but you are completely off base. The only person with that kind of tone is Catmom.

Re: SFA Football Holds Open Tryout
I'm too busy (lazy?) to look up the NCAA rule right now, but football rosters are limited to a certain number (105 for FBS and 90 for most FCS, I believe) up until the first day of classes or first game - whichever comes first (with the exception of the Service Academies). After that date, rosters can be any size.
Thus, any number of walk-ons (outside of "preferred walk-ons" that are recruited and asked to show up on the first day of practice in early August) can be accepted onto the team after school begins.

Re: SFA Football Holds Open Tryout
I didn't have a tone. I was being a bit tongue in cheek. Guess it's ok for people to do that with/to teams they don't particularly care for (ie: hate) but don't let me be caught doing it.
If you don't get it...fine, but don't use your tone with me, either.
FYI - we had a kid walk on in week 11 last year....PK, cause ours cost us a few games...and he was pretty damn good the last game. Even if we did lose, he made 3/4 FGs, which our 2nd year guy was missing all year. He's still with the team.

Walk-ons are for the most part not players that came through any "open" tryout. They are recruited and not offered a scholarship. Big difference.

It's ok. I won't be around much after this week (I bet that makes a bunch of you happy) and I won't have to clarify everything I post. I know a lot of you can read between the lines but a lot don't.
If you get the urge to, come over to the TXST Rivals site and catch my blog - CatMom's Corner. For now I'll just be interviewing former SWT/TXST athletes. My role may expand in the future.

You don't have to clarify anything, since your comments have no direct bearing on what I think of you. It's ok. I won't be around much after this week (I bet that makes a bunch of you happy) and I won't have to clarify everything I post. I know a lot of you can read between the lines but a lot don't.
For the record, the players that come to open try-outs can still make a difference for their team in practice. A few years ago, Texas Tech needed a kicker. They had an open competition at half-time of a game. The player winning it, Williams, became the team's starter. And yes, that's another Texas school with a wide-open offense.

Re: SFA Football Holds Open Tryout
This is definitely a tone. Just own up to it. You are perfectly entitled to disrespect random walk-ons if you feel it's appropriate or advances your case against SFA. Just don't play the hurt feelings card when some people expose the scope of your ignorance. You won't get my sympathy.Seriously? What? Not enough guys on the team?
And Clenz, you already know I value your opinion greatly.

Look canoe kid, you don't even know me or anything about my forum personality or what I actually know about football. You also don't seem to know the SFA/TXST history so back it off until you understand.
It was a sort of serious question with some ribbing set inside it. That's not a tone. Maybe you all didn't get it so I'll leave it at that.
I'm not leaving because of this post or any other post. I've dealt with worse on here. It's a matter of dividing/devoting time to another site that is university specific.
PS: I don't get my feelings hurt here either. If I did I would have stopped posting almost as soon as I joined.

FelisOedipus, it's too bad you are leaving. I love message boarders who are as patronizing, hypocritical, and passive-aggressive as myself.
Personally, I think you should stay. Who knows? We might just learn something from each other.
For instance, you can teach me the difference between "your" and "you're". I suspect it's as elementary as the difference between a kayak and a canoe.

Looking for practice squad members? Either way, I see no big deal about this...and I know Catmom. She's just looking for some chuckles at SFA's expense. I'm sure you'll get enough on 9/24 (TXST seems to each year).

The FCS camp limit is now 95 (new this year) and additional walk-ons can be added on the first day of classes. Rosters can be any size but Title IX issues and simple practicality usually restrict roster sizes anyway.

We actually will have a walk-on play on ST our first home game. They had try-outs in the spring and the final competition for the spot during halftime in the spring game. I'm looking forward to seeing this guy on the field. It's only for the one game, though.....unless he is really good and they decide to keep him
They nick-named him our B.O.B.
